Sup Holmes gets spooky with Nicalis' Tyrone R. Posted: 28 Oct 2012 07:45 AM PDT
[Destructoid's Director of Communications Hamza Aziz asked Jonathan Holmes to make a show called 'Sup, Holmes?' so that Destructoid could later sell a t-shirt that says 'Sup, Holmes?' on it. This is that show. Subscribe to the podcast feed and find more episodes here.] Tyrone Rodriguez, President of Nicalis, was the guest on the very first episode of Sup Holmes back in February. Since that time, he's been keeping himself busy. Between the recent release of Cave Story eShop, Night Sky, and the upcoming releases of Yatagarasu (a 2D fighter for the 3DS eShop), the 2D indie crossover action/platformer Aban Hawkins and the 1,001 Spikes on the 3DS and the Wii U, a free update for Cave Story+ on Steam, and an enhanced port of Ikachan, it's a wonder that the man has the energy to even move let alone show up on my dumb show. We'll be talking to Tyrone about all those projects, what it's like to work on the Wii U, hints at unannounced projects, Halloween spooktaculars, and whatever else he wants to talk about, all at 1pm PST/4pm EST. Soundtrack Cologne bringing the VGM party to Germany Posted: 28 Oct 2012 07:00 AM PDT
You can be sure a lot of beer will be consumed as Soundtrack Cologne 9.0 is preparing to bring some esteemed videogame music legends together for a round of panels and an exclusive concert over the weekend of November 15-18 along with Next Games. Laura Karpman (Kinect Disneyland), Austin Wintory (Journey), Richard Jacques (Sonic R), Chris Hülsbeck (Turrican), Jesper Kyd (Hitman) and Masashi Hamauzu (Final Fantasy XIII) will all be in attendance to discuss development, composition, Kickstarter and many other topics along with industry heads and fans. On November 16, Soundtrack Cologne will host a concert performed by the illustrious WDR orchestra and produced by Thomas Böcker of Symphonic Fantasies fame, which will feature music from games such as Journey, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda and maybe most exciting of all, the new arrangements of Turrican that will be featured on the kickstarted box set. Two showings are scheduled for this concert to allow for fan demand to be met and the composers will all be there, so you can be sure to see a packed house in the Kölner Funkhaus. Will any of you Euro fans be in attendance? |
Cliffy B wants to start a relationship with Resident Evil Posted: 28 Oct 2012 04:00 AM PDT
Cliffy B, honcho behind the Gears of War series, recently became a free agent. Meanwhile at Capcom, Resident Evil 6 has been collecting some of the worst reviews in the series history, largely due to the game's arguably failed attempts to play like other popular Western shooters (including Gears of War). It's like if Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson just had a big fight, then Justin Bieber conveniently became single and bumped into Kristen at the club at the exact same time. Could it be fate? Cliffy may think so, as he recently tweeted "Hey, Capcom. Call me. We can fix Resident Evil. Together. :-)" HE EVEN DID A LITTLE EMOTICON WITH A NOSE ZOMG SO CUTE!!! I wonder if he's crossed the line between looking confident (sexy) and cocky (not sexy). For all we know, Capcom may be quite happy with Resident Evil 6. The game has reportedly sold +3 million in less than a month, which shows a lot of potential for it to become an excellent provider for Capcom's future children when it grows up. While I'm not a big fan of the Gears of War series, I think Cliffy has an excellent head for game design (and a body to match!). If I were Capcom, I'd be totally hot for him. Then again, Masachika Kawata (producer of Resident Evil: Revelations) is also super cute with awesome hair, and he's a lot lower maintenance than Cliffy, who has a well documented track record for going into "full diva mode" when faced with anything less than perfection. Maybe they should all just triple kiss in Cancun and be done with it. |

Forza Horizon: From simulation to driving experience Posted: 28 Oct 2012 03:00 AM PDT
The Forza Motorsport series is known for its dedication to realistic physics and simulation-style race driving. Forza Horizon, released this week to Xbox 360, represents a considerable departure from the formula established by the first four entries to the franchise. Featuring an open world with hundreds of miles of road to explore and race upon, and challenges which measure style as well as speed, it's markedly different but still undeniably Forza. Turn 10 wanted to do more than make another game about racing, fun as that can be. Their goal was to create a game which was about the fun and freedom of driving cars; A game that would, in the words of Creative Director Dan Greenawalt, "turn gamers into car lovers and car lovers into gamers." Simulation was a means to this end, but it's certainly not the only path. Horizon is built on the same physics as Forza, but the motivation is different. In traditional Forza, the goal is to shave seconds off your time, while Horizon's focus is about the experience of driving the car as an exercise in enjoyment, bringing together music and driving, to create a road trip atmosphere. "Motorsport has a set candor," said Greenawalt in a recent conversation with Destructoid. "We have some very big ticket features which are expected for the genre. We prided ourselves on doing a lot of innovation in [Forza 4] because we established some of those core features. Horizon had no expectations. "We needed to develop a vision and features which fulfill that vision," he continued. "We went to the [Playground Games] guys hoping that would bring new things to the franchise. The concept they brought was 'summer music festival,' which lead to the open road, and building relationships with cars." Centering the game around the fictional Horizon Summer Festival provided ample opportunities to get creative. Drawing inspiration from open-world titles such as Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed, the environment (based primarily on the US state of Colorado) is designed to evoke a sense that there's a new adventure around every corner and give freedom to the player to explore that. It's not just the roads which offer opportunities for fun, but the spaces in between also, particularly when combined with the variety of modes found in the Playground Games. "Parts of the world have guard rails, but there are lots of open areas and when those are the arenas for playing these modes, it's a totally different feel to [Forza 4]," Greenawalt remarked. "We do that all the time here in the studio where we're playing 'Cat-and-Mouse.' I think players are going to respond really well to that." Social engagement was clearly a focus, as well, and Greenawalt anticipates that Horizon's Facebook integration and photo sharing features will be a big hit within the game's community in the coming months as players begin flooding their networks with pics of their sweet digital rides. Turn 10 is hoping that the concept of the Horizon Summer Festival instills in players the idea they are on an journey centered around the joy of driving. It's all about bringing together car lovers of all stripes, using the road trip to create a personal connection. "When going on a road trip with your friends," Greenwalt pointed out, "that car becomes one of your friends." |
Info dump for Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus on PS Vita Posted: 27 Oct 2012 11:00 PM PDT
In my my post last week about new Bandai figurines, I very casually mentioned that booby ninja schoolgirl series Senran Kagura was receiving a new installment on PS Vita. It immediately occurred to me that Dtoid never formally shared any information about the game whatsoever. Time to play catch-up! While Senran Kagura producer Kenichiro Takaki intends to keep the core series on the 3DS and its potential successors, he's not opposed to bringing spin-offs to other platforms. Hence, Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus -- the "vi" in "Shinovi" stands for "Vita" -- will be heading to Sony's portable, trading in the side-view brawling style of its predecessors for Dynasty Warriors-esque hack 'n slash. In addition to featuring 10 new characters on top of the returning 10 from the original two games, there will be four-player Wi-Fi battles as well as full costume breaks -- in other words, the girls' clothing continues to degrade during battle until they are forced to cover their naughty bits with a free hand. Why the extra cheesecake? Takaki simply replies, "I wanted to make it more sexual." Well... that's a refreshingly straightforward answer. When Shinovi Versus arrives in Japan on February 28, it'll come in a regular edition and a special deluxe edition that includes five adorable chibi figurines of the first game's heroines. You can see those gals in the gallery below, along with tons of screenshots from the game. Marvelous has expressed plans to localize the 3DS Senran Kagura titles before, but at least Vita owners can import Shinovi Versus to play on their region-free devices while the company suits come to a decision.
