EVE Online introduces open invites for buddy program Posted: 29 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, MMO industry, News items, Promotions, Dev Diaries, Sandbox If there's one thing that can be said about EVE Online, it's that it is even better when enjoyed with friends. So to help facilitate getting more friends into the game, CCP Games is expanding on its current buddy program to offer players a way to invite more friends at once. And just like the former one-to-one invite system, both players and anyone who uses the mass invite will net rewards when folks upgrade from a trial to the full version of the game. The new one-to-many buddy system works by giving players a URL to share with friends that can be used repeatedly. Not only that, but if one friend isn't interested in using it, the URL can be forwarded to others who might. Then the player who put out the public invite gets the reward for anyone who uses it and subscribes, regardless of whether they know each other or not. Direct personal invites will still be available for players to use, albeit without the PLEX-for-PLEX reward option. For more details, check out the official dev blog. Wargaming.net funds expedition to recover WWII aircraft in Burma Posted: 29 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Betas, Historical, Events, real-world, MMO industry, New titles, News items, War, Free-to-play, World of Warplanes Making World of Warplanes is not all Wargaming.net does to pay homage to the World War II-era aircraft. The studio has announced that it will fully fund an expedition to try and recover vintage British Spitfires in Burma.David Cundall, an aircraft enthusiast with experience in aviation archaeology, has already recovered a number of other WWII craft in the UK. Over the last 14 years, Cundall has researched rumors of Spitfires buried in the Southeast Asia. Now, thanks to the funds provided by Wargaming.net, he will be able to work together with the Burmese authorities to continue the project and hopefully recover the aircraft. Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming, emphasized the company's dedication to historic preservation, stating: "Since its founding, Wargaming has been dedicated to bringing military history alive, whether through video games or more recently through historic preservation and educational initiatives with museums. When we learned of David's long quest to track down the Spitfires, we reached out to support him, not only to recover the planes if they are there, but also to help tell the story of the air war in Burma -- which is of great interest to our community."Wargaming.net will also launch a blog chronicling the expedition's progress. The Daily Grind: What MMO trend could you do without? Posted: 29 Oct 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Game mechanics, MMO industry, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous I'm something of an immersion nut when it comes to MMOs (and gaming in general), but strangely I'm not a fan of voice-acting. I don't know whether it's the fact that I enjoyed games long before voice-acting was even possible or if it's just annoyance at the fact that VO takes precious budget dollars away from actual game functionality. Whatever the reason, I simply don't dig it.What about you, dear readers? What current MMO trend could you do without? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Posted: 28 Oct 2012 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Massively Meta, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post. This week, Massively's commentariat embraced a bit of schadenfreude as an EVE Online player apparently lost in-game assets worth over $6000 US. In the aftermath, some player sleuths suggested that the losses may not be as high as originally suspected -- if the kill even happened at all. Intentional hoax or API mishap, this surely won't be the last wild story emerging from the infamous space sandbox. The rest of the week's top MMO stories are beyond the cut. EVE Evolved: Top ten ganks, scams, heists and events Posted: 28 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Lore, Professions, PvP, Endgame, News items, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Sandbox It's been called "boring," "confusing," and "the world's biggest spreadsheet," but every now and then a story emerges from sci-fi MMO EVE Online and grabs the gaming world's attention. Tales of massive thefts, colossal battles, high-value kills, record-breaking scams, political dirty deals, and controversial player-run events never fail to grip us. Perhaps it's the fact that these events have such huge impacts in the EVE sandbox that captures our imaginations, or maybe we just want to watch with morbid curiosity as a virtual society self-destructs.Whether it's innocent interest in quirky stories or a secret sense of schadenfreude that keeps us glued to EVE's most illicit events, the game continues to deliver them with startling regularity. Most scams, thefts, and high-profile battles will never make the news, instead becoming another forgotten part of EVE's history or just a story for a few friends to reminisce about. But those stories that do reach the news always draw in a huge audience that wouldn't play EVE in a million years but can't get enough of its engrossing stories. In this week's EVE Evolved, I run down a list of ten incredible EVE kills, scams, heists, and sandbox events that have made it into the news over the years.
