Good and bad, I thought it a good idea to record the Darkfall that exists now so that I can compare it to the Darkfall that will be open after an upcoming relaunch, one that promises to change quite a few key features. Will it be a better game? I hope so.Either way, during my week with this free-for-all PvP MMO, I was able to hook up with a newbie-friendly clan relatively quickly but spent most of my time running to the city where the clan took up residence. Same old Darkfall, really, but there were some truly hilarious and truly fun moments all the same. One Shots: Where the demons dwell Posted: 28 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Screenshots, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, One Shots, The Secret World, TERA, Miscellaneous In ancient times, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, lived a strange race of people, the Druids. No one knows who they were or what they were doing. That is, except for One Shots contributor Brokenwing, who sends us this gorgeous shot of Stonehenge after he completed a mission in The Secret World."In all Halloween missions in TSW, cats are involved," Brokenwing writes, "and you need to defeat an Incognito -- the cat god himself. In Stonehenge! At night! It's so much fun and it looks beautiful." Welcome to a very One Shots Halloween, sponsored by The Great Pumpkin, Inc.! The Daily Grind: What's been your best recent death? Posted: 28 Oct 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Culture, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous So the other day I was doing my typical Guild Wars 2 exploration thing when I saw that I was close to a point of interest that I needed. It was down a frozen river, so I started jogging in an Asuran fashion. I was a little distracted, however, and ended up running right off a frozen waterfall to do a fatal faceplant some fifty feet below. You can see the result above. The funny thing is that I landed next to another dead player, whose corpse let out a guffaw when she saw me arrive in the same fashion. Sometimes death loves company, y'know? In the spirit of my many, many boneheaded deaths, I'd love to hear about one of your best demises as of late. Was it funny? Embarrassing? Epic? Futile? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! The Mog Log: When the lights go off in Eorzea Posted: 27 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Events, real-world, Patches, Opinion, Consoles, Final Fantasy XIV, The Mog Log The current version of Final Fantasy XIV is redefining the term "lame duck." This is a duck that is so lame it can no longer move under its own power, relying instead on a specially trained squad of ducklings to occasionally move its head toward food. How it trained the ducklings, I don't know; that's not really the point. It's not a perfect analogy. We're very close to a final character copy and a server shutdown, at which point... the servers get turned back on again, I guess. Naoki Yoshida quite openly stated that if there is a large enough chunk of players who wanted the servers back on, he will make that happen, even though nothing more would get saved. This raises a variety of questions -- chiefly, why anyone would want to keep playing the game with the explicit understanding that the whole game is getting rolled back before too much longer, but I'm not one of the ones who voted for the reactivation. But as we enter the final phase -- which is basically just through early next week, if you're not keeping track -- it seems as if it's worth discussing the servers going down and then coming back on. Really, what else do we have to occupy our minds regarding Final Fantasy XIV right now? The Tattered Notebook: Final thoughts on SOE Live 2012 Posted: 27 Oct 2012 12:00 PM PDT Filed under: EverQuest, EverQuest II, Culture, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Opinion, Massively Event Coverage, The Tattered Notebook, EverQuest Next, Miscellaneous If there's one word that perfectly sums up the spirit of SOE Live, it's family. I don't know how, but SOE always manages to deliver a big gaming event and make it feel like a casual, intimate get-together at the same time. The picture above epitomizes that, and I'll explain the story behind it below. There was a lot to cover this time around, and I would argue that this year's convention included more titles than ever before and brought more game news than it ever has. It was a hectic pace, but we all survived in one piece. Well, actually, there was that one guy at the pool (a Ranger), but he turned out to be OK too. You've probably seen the many articles that MJ Guthrie and I put together over the past few days, but I'd like to use this week's column to do one final wrap-up of things that weren't covered but deserve a look. Read on for my final wrap-up of a very busy SOE Live.
