The Soapbox: Meeting the 'Asian gamer' stereotype on common ground Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT Filed under: Real life, Culture, Opinion, Free-to-play, Browser, The Soapbox, Miscellaneous I originally thought I would craft this Soapbox to discuss the differences between Western and Eastern gamers. But in my research, I ended up noticing the differences and the similarities between the two gaming cultures -- in fact, the similarities were more prominent. Yes, there are gamers who game in stereotypical ways; there are gamers from China, Korea, and Japan who are stereotypically "Asian."But Westerners can behave as stereotypes as well. The good news is that we're all blending together. New making-of video chronicles Defiance's cinematography, writing, and music Posted: 23 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, Video, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Defiance There's a new Defiance making-of video floating around YouTube this week (that's Defiance the TV show, not Defiance the MMORPG). Sure, they share the same universe and will purportedly affect one another, but the three-minute clip that we've embedded for you after the break focuses exclusively on the writing, cinematography, and music for the show. The Syfy series' crew is composed of veterans from the network's much-loved Battlestar Galactica reboot, and writer/executive producer Kevin Murphy says fans will notice the same vibe when the "eclectic immigrant drama" kicks off in April of 2013. We can't either, which is why we cajoled Chris Roberts into joining us on this week's Massively Speaking podcast to talk about his new labor of love. Don't forget to check in with us this afternoon as we ask the Wing Commander and Privateer creator about his Star Citizen investors, crowd-funding, the economy, and PvP! Flameseeker Chronicles: Preparing for the Mad King in Guild Wars 2 Posted: 23 Oct 2012 07:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Guild Wars, Culture, Events, in-game, Lore, News items, Opinion, Guild Wars 2, Flameseeker Chronicles By now, Lion's Arch probably looks a little different than we're used to. It had already taken on a decidedly ghoulish cast in Guild Wars by Friday, so I guess the Mad King's influence shifted by a few calendar days over the course of the 250 years between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. Longtime fans of the original game don't need a lot of convincing to get anxious for the fulfillment of the spooky foreshadowing that's been going on for the past week or two. For those of you whose knowledge of Tyrian lore is either developing or a wee bit rusty, let's take a look at what's in store. Let us begin with a question. Why can't you borrow money from a Dwarf? The Daily Grind: How intense are you when you play? Posted: 23 Oct 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Culture, Endgame, Opinion, The Daily Grind, Miscellaneous We all play at different intensity levels. It's human nature. Some of us sit down for a night of dungeons in World of Warcraft and we play primarily to have fun, with no more intensity than we would devote to playing Tetris until the screen fills. Other people sit down for a night of dungeons with an intensity level that rivals Olympic champions, screaming for people to keep moving and running through pulls with elegant efficiency. We all vary a bit from day to day, either pushing harder or relaxing more as circumstances dictate, but we also have a level that we wind up defaulting to when we play our games of choice. So how intense are you when you sit down to your favorite game? Are you more laid-back? Serious while avoiding taskmaster status? Driven to succeed at all costs? Or does it depend a lot based on your nightly activities? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! Wings Over Atreia: Making your mark on Aion 4.0 Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:00 PM PDT Filed under: Aion, Events, real-world, Expansions, Opinion, Free-to-play, Wings Over Atreia HA! For the who-knows-how-many umpteenth time, my carefully considered words for the week (which were incredibly timely and sparkly, by the way!) have been usurped by yet another last-minute announcement by NCsoft. So we will all have to just exercise our patience muscles and explore those words of wisdom next time. Today, I am delving into the idea of making your mark in Aion!As announced just today, players have the opportunity to design a unique weapon for the new Gunner class coming in Aion's big 4.0 expansion/patch. Think about it: A piece of your creativity could be in the hands of every gun-slinging Daeva in the wild Western market! Not only is this cool in itself, but the fact that the non-contest is happening at all is a positive sign that NCsoft actually listens to Aion's players. Now, you may be sitting there asking yourself, how did she come to that conclusion? Well, here's how. Whether listening to a panel at SOE Live or catching them randomly in a hall, their passion and enthusiasm for the game is unmistakable... and contagious. But fun wasn't the only theme present. In fact, the focus throughout the weekend convention can be described in three F words. (And no, not a one of them is the one you are thinking!) A video to mourn City of Heroes and celebrate the new Paragon Studios project Posted: 22 Oct 2012 05:00 PM PDT Filed under: Super-hero, Video, City of Heroes, Culture, MMO industry, News items, Free-to-play, Machinima, Humor It's not over until it's over for City of Heroes, but that time is fast approaching. Longtime fan and noted machinima artist Samuraiko decided that the city deserved to go out with an appropriate tribute and has put together a last video memorializing the game's environments and players. If you're a veteran player, you owe it to yourself to sit through the whole video just past the break, although you may get misty-eyed toward the end.But all is not doom and gloom for the fine folks from Paragon Studios, as they've taken it upon themselves to begin a new project, one that will undoubtedly be just as influential in their chosen field. Or possibly not. It's still worth watching after the previous video, at the least to get a smile back on your face. Jump on past the break for both videos, and keep your eyes peeled for more coverage as we approach the City of Heroes shutdown. EVE devs struggle with factional warfare stagnation Posted: 22 Oct 2012 01:30 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Patches, Dev Diaries CCP Games isn't completely happy with the results brought on by EVE Online's most recent expansion, Inferno. In a frank dev blog, CCP Fozzie admits that its factional warfare system has fizzled in places and caused inflation in the market. So the team is preparing a new patch for tomorrow to combat these undesirable elements."These are the problems that our retribution changes were designed to alleviate, but players have been telling us that the situation is degrading faster than we had expected," Fozzie writes. "Faced with the dual problems of factional warfare stagnation and PLEX inflation, we saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone." Inferno 1.3.2 will make significant changes to loyalty point acquisition and expenditure rates. The team's also patching in a fix to combat AFK plexing while continuing to work on improved NPCs for the factional warfare system for the future. SOE Live 2012: Dave Georgeson on the business side of the EQ franchise Posted: 22 Oct 2012 01:00 PM PDT Filed under: Business models, Economy, Expansions, Game mechanics, MMO industry, News items, Free-to-play, Massively Event Coverage, Miscellaneous There were many terrific panels this year at SOE Live, and as usual, there's a very good dialogue between the players and the developers on a variety of issues. Among them was one that looked at the EverQuest franchise from a different perspective than usual. Instead of discussing expansions, class balance, game mechanics, or itemization, it addressed the business model behind the games. Over the past two years, both EQ and EQII have seen enormous changes, but even if you go further back, you'll see a dramatic transition away from the traditional subscription model.Dave Georgeson, Director of the EverQuest franchise, gave a talk that shed some new light on the philosophy behind some of the changes. In addition, he outlined some upcoming changes to the SOE update cycle, marketplace, and other areas of monetization. We've got all the details below, and some of the changes are not at all what you'd expect! EVE Online player loses tiny ship worth over $6,000 Posted: 22 Oct 2012 11:00 AM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Culture, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Lore, PvP, News items, Sandbox EVE Online is well known for its sandbox gameplay and ruthless citizens, with monumental kills and record-breaking scams popping up year after year. In 2010, one player lost over $1,000 US worth of 30-day game time codes (PLEX) when he transported them in the cargo hold of a tiny, fragile frigate. Thinking his ship too fast to be caught, that player lost his entire alliance's budget in a single mishap. That record was thoroughly eradicated today by player "stewie Zanjoahir," who reportedly lost over 213,000,000,000 ISK when he tried to transport a huge cache of valuable blueprints through nullsec in a tiny, unfitted frigate. That much ISK could currently buy around 367 30-day game time codes (PLEX) at around 580 million ISK each, for a combined total of over 30 years of game time. To put that into perspective, 367 PLEX bought with real cash would cost about $6,422.50 US. Some players doubt the authenticity of the kill report, but the killboard it was posted on claims to have verified it with EVE's automated API service, and CCP Games itself posted about the kill on Facebook. Kills of this scale may have happened before, but it was previously impossible to tell whether a destroyed blueprint was a cheap copy or an expensive original. The value of this kill may even be higher than the reported figure, as several of the blueprint copies that weren't counted are actually worth billions of ISK. Today's kill may be the largest confirmed kill of any ship in EVE's history and could even be the most expensive character death in any MMO to date.
