Massively's hands-on with The Elder Scrolls Online Posted: 22 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Galleries, Screenshots, Classes, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, Previews, PvE, Opinion, Hands-on, Massively Hands-on, The Elder Scrolls Online Last week, I ventured forth from the subtropical paradise (read: sweltering wasteland) of the Florida panhandle to the frozen northern wastes of Maryland to visit the studios of ZeniMax Online to spend some time with the studio's premiere foray into the MMO space, The Elder Scrolls Online. The Elder Scrolls Online has caused quite a clamor since it was first revealed back in May. Since then, everything has calmed down, everyone is discussing everything reasonably, and... I can't keep a straight face. In reality, MMO gamers are deeply divided about TESO, and some vocal potential players are most displeased to see the venerable sandbox world of Tamriel being reduced to yet another themepark MMO experience. So after about four hours of hands-on time with the title, I'm here to answer some questions. Have the folks at ZeniMax run The Elder Scrolls off the rails, or have they just taken it in a bold, new direction? Join me after the cut and I'll tell you what I think. The Daily Grind: Is EverQuest a sandbox? Posted: 22 Oct 2012 06:00 AM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, MMO industry, Opinion, Sandbox Our coverage of John Smedley's SOE Live keynote elicited some curious comments, chief among them the notion that EverQuest is a sandbox title. This sentiment followed on from Smed's announcement that EQNext has been remodeled from an EQIII evolution to a sandbox revolution, as some of our readers said that that's a return to the franchise's roots. While it's true that the definition of sandbox is somewhat malleable and subjective, we're curious to know how you can stretch it to include a level-based title with class-based gameplay that largely revolves around killing and looting. Sure it was less directed than modern themeparks, and there was a lack of documentation/communal knowledge that made early gameplay challenging, but a sandbox? Really? What do you think, Massively readers? Is EQ a sandbox, and if so, what makes it one? Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind! SOE Live 2012: EverQuest's Rain of Fear includes offline selling and item progression Posted: 21 Oct 2012 08:00 PM PDT Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, Expansions, Game mechanics, Free-to-play, Massively Event Coverage If you think that after 13 years and 18 expansions there is nothing new left to do for EverQuest, you don't know Sony Online Entertainment very well! In fact, developers at SOE Live 2012 announced a bunch of new features and content for the game's upcoming 19th expansion, Rain of Fear. Due out on November 28th, this expansion has plenty of things for players to enjoy. And by plenty, we mean more than you can shake a dragon at. And trust us, there are lots of dragons, too!Besides an enormous tree (that's like its own zone), an aggro meter, tons of dragons, a slayer system, and a collection system, EverQuest players will find a more robust and flexible broker system, over 3000 new tradeskill recipes, more than 1800 new spells, and a new item progression system. And that's really just the tip of the iceberg. SOE Live 2012: EverQuest's Rain of Fear includes offline selling and item progression originally appeared on Massively on Sun, 21 Oct 2012 22:00:00 EST. MMO Week in Review: SOE Live 2012 Posted: 21 Oct 2012 06:00 PM PDT Filed under: Massively Meta, Massively Event Coverage, Week in Review, Miscellaneous At the end of every week, we round up the best and most popular news stories, exclusive features, and insightful columns published on Massively and then present them all in one convenient place. If you missed a big MMO or WoW Insider story last week, you've come to the right post.Massively's Karen Bryan and MJ Guthrie braved Vegas this weekend to witness the insanity of the newly reborn SOE Live. As if making up for last year's Fan Faire, which was a bit of a downer in the wake of Star Wars Galaxies' cancellation, SOE pulled out all the stops, especially for sandbox fans. After multiple keynotes (why have one keynote when you can have three at thrice the price?) hitting the highlights, we investigated EverQuest Next, which John Smedley claims will be the largest sandbox MMO ever made; DC Universe Online, which is adding an impressive housing system in its next DLC; and EverQuest II's Chains of Eternity expansion, which puts crafters in the limelight. We also chatted with Smedley about SOE's philosophical shift and ProSieben.Sat.1 and checked out the SOE/Runewaker collaboration known as Dragon's Prophet. We even braved hardcore permadeath in Wizardry Online. Oh yeah, and there's that little thing called PlanetSide 2 launching on November 20th. The rest of our top MMO stories are just beyond the cut! EVE Evolved: Three ways to break Retribution Posted: 21 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, Game mechanics, Patches, PvP, Opinion, EVE Evolved, Sandbox EVE Online's upcoming Retribution expansion is set to revolutionise PvP with its brand-new criminal and bounty hunting systems. Players will be able to hunt down criminals who show their faces in highsec, and bounty hunters will track not just individuals but also entire corporations and alliances. If past expansions are any indication, however, the first thing players invariably do with any new feature is to try to break it. Some people will undoubtedly find ways to bend the new gameplay into scams, others will trick players into getting themselves killed for a few laughs, and a few will hunt for borderline exploits. We now know enough about Retribution's new features to figure out some of the ways they can be potentially abused. The ability to sell kill rights opens up a whole new scam based on tempting players with a juicy target and then pulling the rug out from under their feet. The new Suspect flag that lets players dispense justice to criminals can also be used to bait innocent players into getting themselves killed. There may even be a way to get rid of bounties for free, undermining one of the expansion's core mechanics. In this week's EVE Evolved, I look at three potential pitfalls in the upcoming Retribution expansion, how they might work when the expansion goes live, and how to protect yourself from falling victim to them.
