The Guild Counsel Damion Schubert remembers Meridian 59 at GDC
Last week was the final GDC Online, as the yearly convention moves out to Los Angeles next year under the new name GDC Next. Coincidentally, developers gave several postmortem talks about some of the classic MMOs of years ago. Among those was Meridian 59, and BioWare's Damion Schubert took us back in time to look at what it was like as the game prepped for launch and the first few years. What stands out are the incredible stories that came from player interaction and guild rivalries. Whether you're long-time fan or someone who wasn't even born yet when those early games emerged, this trip through the time machine is definitely worth a look!

Why I Play: DC Universe Online

I've played pretty much every superhero MMO that has come out since 1999. That means City of Heroes, Champions Online, Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, Hero Smash, and of course, DC Universe Online. There's something about superhero culture that speaks to all of us, and I think the feeling of roleplaying better or cooler versions of ourselves is the key. I tend to roll characters who are almost too much like me. They're superheroes, sure, but a bit weaker, smaller, and thinner than your usual caped crusader. Fortunately, almost every title has let me experiment, although sometimes my character has to resemble me... after working out for many years and wielding cosmic rays.

At first, DC Universe Online did not impress me as much as some of the others. It did have several issues when it launched, some that are still in need of fixing, but over time, SOE has shown just what a priority continuing development is. Patches are frequent and robust, the item mall is restocked with cool items often, and the transition to free-to-play gives players more choices than ever before.

But that's all technical mumbo-jumbo. This column is called Why I Play, not "Here Are Some Details About This Game." So why exactly do I find myself logging into DC Universe Online every week?

ArenaNet programmers field Guild Wars 2 questions on Reddit
If you're an aspiring game programmer or a Guild Wars 2 fan, you might want to check out the transcript of a recent Reddit session that features most of ArenaNet's programming team. Technical Director Cameron Dunn, Engine Programming Team Lead Chad Taylor, and Gameplay Programming Team Lead Braeden Shosa are just a few of the folks on hand answering in Reddit's signature ask-me-anything format.

"It's worth pointing out upfront that we're programmers, not designers," ArenaNet's intro says. "So if you want to know why your favorite skill was changed or when you should sell all of your hoarded butter to maximize gold return, we probably won't be able to help."

      Wakfu rolls out the Foggernaut
We can always count on Wakfu to come up with classes that are far beyond the tired norm of Warrior, Mage, Rogue, and Priest. Case in point, Square-Enix has just revealed the game's 14th playable class, the Foggernaut.

The Foggernaut is a mechanical man who can unleash a number of gadgets and gizmos to save the day. It specializes in fire, earth, and statsis attacks, and can fight from both short- and long-range.

This new class is now available for play, and all interested parties can check out the Foggernaut video reveal after the jump.

The Daily Grind - Do you multitask while playing MMOs
Yesterday evening was pretty typical of weeknights at the old homestead. There was a bit of MMO playing and a bit of television watching. Atypically, though, these two events occurred simultaneously.

I might have been bored with my MMO or bored with Star Trek: Voyager on Netflix. I honestly can't remember but the point is that neither activity was engaging enough to pursue exclusively. What about you, morning crew? Are you usually immersed in your MMOs or are you prone to multitasking?

Every morning, the Massively bloggers probe the minds of their readers with deep, thought-provoking questions about that most serious of topics: massively online gaming. We crave your opinions, so grab your caffeinated beverage of choice and chime in on today's Daily Grind!

WildStar reveals the State of the Game in October

        Posted: 17 Oct 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.
It's been anything but a quiet month for the development team behind WildStar. Sure, the game isn't out for you to play at the moment, but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes. According to the latest WildStar Wednesday by executive producer Jeremy Gaffney, part of the trouble with an MMO is that you simultaneously have to deliver more content than a normal boxed game while being more flexible to player feedback.

So what's been going on behind the scenes? The development team has been working on designing the game's mid-level zones, distinct from the low-level zones that have been previewed thus far. There's also more work being done on the game's second faction and the earliest implementations of raids, PvP matches, and instanced dungeons. If you're an avid fan of the game, you'll want to check out the latest dispatch for a few more teases of what you can expect from future Wednesday reveals and the game's eventual launch.

War of Angels launches Bloody Arena update

War of Angels launches Bloody Arena update
Following the successful relaunch of War of Angels last month, Neowiz Games is showcasing a brand new Bloody Arena update for the high fantasy F2P MMO. As you might expect, this update allows players to battle it out in a PvP arena for honor and Blood Money, which can be used to buy special in-game armor and weapons only available through PvP.

But if you're imagining your run-of-the-mill PvP arena with the same old stale rules, you might be in for a surprise. The combat is team-based in the Bloody Arena, where groups of three, four, or five players level 40 or above will fight to the death. Perhaps our favorite part of this feature is what happens to fallen teammates. When a player is eliminated during a match, he is held in a sideline cell where he can reach out and strike his team's opponent with melee attacks to help turn the tide of battle.

Two all-new armor and weapon sets act as rewards for the victor, with each class showing off its own specific style. Check out more in our gallery below.

Path of Exile announces Act Three and open beta
This December, Path of Exile will be not only entering open beta but introducing its new Act 3 expansion. What's this? An expansion before the game even launches? Yeah, games are nutty like that these days, but the folks at Grinding Gear Games say that they've already raised over $1.2 million in crowd-funded support during closed beta.

This new expansion will add an extra 50% of content to the game world, introducing players to the ruined city of Sarn and providing some backstory on those who exiled them to Wraeclast. PvP arena combat will also debut in a patch before Act 3 launches.

You can currently pre-purchase the game when you spend as little as $10 worth on in-game credit. This will get also get you a closed beta key while you wait for open beta in December.

          Xsyon opens free trial server
If you've got a hankering for some sandbox action, but find the thought of a subscription up-front is a deal-breaker, then Notorious Games has heard your unspoken plea! The studio announced that a free trial server is now open to the public.

The trial server is the same game as the subscription server, although the separation will certainly protect those investing in the title. All you have to do to access the trial server is sign up on the forums, after which instructions will appear on your account page.

There's one caveat of playing Xsyon for free, however: The team plans to hit the big reset switch on the trial server every Monday. So if you're looking to preserve your hard work, you'll eventually have to subscribe.

City of Steam reveals journey from turn-based to real-time combat

City of Steam regales with journey from turnbased to realtime action
The saga of City of Steam's creation continues to grow more impressive with a new behind-the-scenes story. In it, the devs tell the little-known tale about how the game used to be turn-based. This was originally due to a very limited team and budget, although the devs further justified the decision by saying that the MMO was based on a turn-based pen-and-paper game anyway.

City of Steam managed to make the transition to real-time action with the help of some surprise financing prior to alpha. Over 90% of the code had to be reworked to make it happen, but the team pulled it off prior to the game's alpha and any actual players' eyes.

It might be easy for us to take for granted how studios can whip up real-time combat in MMOs, but this post illustrates how incredibly complicated it can be, especially for teams with limited resources.

City of Steam heads into beta next month.

SMITE enlists Freya, Queen of the Vikings for duty
SMITE's mining the Nordic pantheon for its starting lineup these days, as Hi-Rez Studios has revealed the newest playable character: Freya, Queen of the Valkyries. No, kids, Freya's not just a lingerie brand; she's a kick-butt warrior with a very long sword. Hi-Rez released a five-minute video on this tattooed protagonist to get players up to speed.

"Every rose bears thorns, but this one wields swords," the video narrator begins before launching into a rundown of the character. Freya is a melee magical fighter who can use her magical power to beef up her physical attacks.

Freya boasts abilities such as Irradiate, Pulse, and Banish, although her Valkyrie's Discretion is perhaps the coolest. This ultimate ability allows her to fly above the battlefield and attack without fear of reprisal.

Choose My Adventure You decide the MMO and how I play it
It's finally time for my second round of Choose My Adventure. The last time I helmed CMA, Lineage II was top pick, and I had a lot of fun with it. I took tons of screenshots and video to keep you in the loop as to my progress, and you can expect the same, whichever game is chosen this time.

MJ's turn with The Secret World was a lot of fun to read and follow. She even livestreamed some of her shenanigans... I mean, adventures. You can bet I'll be playing with one finger over the PrtScn button and livestreaming some of my adventures as well. I hope to make this a multimedia extravaganza of epic proportions.

Take a look through your choices and vote, vote, vote. And make sure to get those votes in by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday the 21st!

Blizzard: Patch 5.1 is 'going to change what it means to be a World of Warcraft patch'

Blizzard is 'going to change what it means to be a World of Warcraft patch'
In an effort to deliver more frequent updates, Blizzard has stated that it's willing to redefine the traditional mega-World of Warcraft patch to include smaller updates. "We're going to change what it means to be a WoW patch," said Production Director J. Allen Brack. "We just had to make a decision about how we're going to do these updates that are quicker."

Brack spoke with Rock, Paper, Shotgun about the upcoming smaller Mists of Pandaria 5.1 patch as well as World of Warcraft's future. He said that the WoW team is "larger than it's ever been," with 165 people working on the project.

Other topics raised by the interview included free-to-play and revamps to older content. Brack said that the team has thought about both, and he made the interesting admission that The Burning Crusade has aged poorly in comparison to the rest of the game. "There was a while where Burning Crusade was the best thing we'd ever done," he said. "Now it's the worst thing we've ever done, because everything else has raised the level with Cataclysm."

Enter at Your Own Rift: Analysing Storm Legion's new souls

Enter at Your Own Rift Analysing Storm Legion's new souls
I still can't wrap my head around just how many metric tons of content are coming with RIFT: Storm Legion. It's an expansion that looks to put other expansions to shame by sheer size alone. Epeen competitions notwithstanding, any one of these major features would usually be good enough for a full expansion elsewhere.

Take the new souls, for example. Storm Legion is adding four of them, one for each archetype. That's not just four additional classes but a hefty amount of additional combinations, since RIFT builds allow for three souls at a time. So each archetype is going from 56 unique soul combinations to a whopping 84.

I can only imagine how much of a headache 336 different soul combinations are to balance, but fortunately I don't have to worry about it from my end. Instead, I want to take a look at the revealed new souls and speculate as to how they'll fit in with the game come next month.

A Mild-Mannered Reporter: The unseen cost of closing City of Heroes

In addition to all of the very well seen costs.
City of Heroes is leaving a lot of victims with its closure: the employees of an excellent and underrated development team, a group of players with a lot of passion and energy, and an entire world that deserves to keep going. But there are a lot of other costs along with all of those, things what we're losing out on that you might not have even considered at the time.

At least, not until some writer on the internet decided to call attention to all of those things. Guilty as charged.

Those of us who are adamant fans of the game have been lamenting the loss of the game that is. But one of the reasons I tied every single anniversary post with another post looking forward is that City of Heroes has always been a game that moves in both directions. It's a game where a lot of the fun is tied into what it will be. And while there are some directions I've been critical of, there's a lot about what's coming up that's never going to be realized.
