EVO begins tomorrow! Join Dtoid for live chat and bears screenshot

EVO, the world's premier fighting game tournament, begins tomorrow and will leave our ass black and blue by the time it ends on Sunday night.

Remember that thing we did last year where we sat around talking about people who were sitting around playing fighting games? Well, we're going to do it again. Due to the positive response last year but mostly due to me having a fantastic time with you guys, Destructoid will once again be providing up-to-date winner details, general EVO news, and a chat room full of drunken fighting game enthusiasts. Remember: Don't feed the trolls.

EVO is getting kind of crazy this year with no BlazBlue, new games in tourney (Soul Calibur V, Street Fighter X Tekken), tons of indie games, and exhibitions for upcoming fighting games (including PlayStation All-Stars and Persona 4 Arena).

More details on the schedule after the jump.

Here's the full EVO livestream schedule, which you can watch embedded on Dtoid or here.

We'll have more details on chat and event coverage, once EVO kicks off tomorrow morning. Do come back!

E3 2011 was one of more memorable E3 for many of us at Destructoid thanks solely to Sega's Sonic Boom event. Seriously, just watch the above video to see the pure insanity of the entire night's events.

Sonic Boom is taking place once again during Comic-Con on Friday, July 13, and will feature musical performances by Crush 40, Alex and JP Makhlouf from Cash Cash, Takashi Iizuka from Sonic Team, and Steve Lycett from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed. Tickets are $20 to get in, and that includes swag treats like T-shirts, the amazing Sonic hat, plus food and drinks.

Additionally, Sega is going to have Aliens: Colonial Marines and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed playable at the show. Plus, acclaimed concept designer and visual futurist, Syd Mead, will be signing limited prints of his concept art of the USS Sulaco featured in the movies Aliens and the upcoming game.

Rockstar wants your face for Max Payne again

Rockstar wants your face for Max Payne again screenshot

Back in January, Rockstar Games gave Max Payne fans the chance to be forever immortalized in Max Payne 3's multiplayer. A cool idea, for sure, but apparently the contest was met with a good deal of success as they've extended that opportunity yet again for the DLC releasing this fall.

The studio will be hosting a series of multiplayer events over the next month through which they'll be randomly selecting participating players for a shot at small-time fame. Rockstar will then contact a select group of particpants to give them their shot at competitive multiplayer fame. To be eligible, make sure you've linked either your Gamertag or PSN id to your Rockstar Social Club profile and jump into the Social Club Multiplayer Event playlist during each of the scheduled sessions.

Here's a rundown of the full schedule:

Creation of Polyphemus in God of War: Ascension detailed

Creation of Polyphemus in God of War: Ascension detailed screenshot

The official blog for God of War has posted a new Q/A with the Lead Character Concept Artist for God of War: Ascension, Izzy, which takes an in-depth look at the first ever multiplayer boss encounter for the series, Polyphemus.

For those not up on their Greek mythology, Polyphemus is quite possibly the most famous cyclops ever. The son of Poseidon and the nymph Thoosa, Polyphemus plays a significant role in the myth of Odysseus when he captures the returning sailors and begins eating them, two at a time, until the Greeks manage to get him drunk and blind him with a sharpened branch to enable their escape. Polyphemus would later pray to his father for vengeance, causing further problems on the voyage.

Sony Santa Monica has played with the mythos a bit, making Polyphemus into a full-on Titan (still the son of Poseidon; try not to think about it) and Izzy -- also responsible for the gory "Elephantaur" -- goes futher into the inspiration and approach to making this massive bad guy.

Make sure to read through to the end for a nauseatingly graphic description of how Kratos himself would deal with this one-eyed monstrosity. Eugh.

A beer a day keeps the zombies away with Zombeer

A beer a day keeps the zombies away with Zombeer screenshot

Finally, a game that combines zombies and drinking responsibly. I was starting to get worried. Spain-based studio Moonbite has just announced Zombeer, coming to Mac and PC. In this game, lead character K will have to steadily maintain a careful buzz (never over-imbibing, mind you) to fend off both the impending infection and the zombie apocalypse.

Also: it has a cheerleader zombie that you can slap with a dildo and some really disgusting zombie boobs. If you're into that. Oh, who am I kidding? Who isn't into veiny, bulbous, zombie boobs?

Zombeer is expected in the second half of 2012.

The Mega Man 4 ROM hack to end all ROM hacks

Posted: 05 Jul 2012 01:00 PM PDT

The Mega Man 4 ROM hack to end all ROM hacks screenshot

When you hear the phrase "ROM hack," two thoughts may flitter across your mind. One, somebody took an old game from a legacy console and slightly altered the color palette or sprites to make it look like, for instance, all the boxers in Punch-Out!! are bare-ass. Or two, the level layouts have been altered to the point that no mere mortal could hope beat the game and keep their sanity in check. The former is the kind of stuff hacking newbies pull to get a few shock laughs, while the latter results in a project that is more frustrating than entertaining.

While the majority of hacks aren't worth your time, there are a few gems that rival what major developers could have conceived. Further still, there are hacks so elaborate that it's nearly impossible to recognize the source game at the heart of it all. PureSabe's Rockman 4 Minus Infinity is one such hack, being less of a remix of Mega Man 4 and more of a total evolution of the Mega Man formula.

I first saw clips of MI late last year, and though my interest was piqued, I couldn't find much else. Last week, The Mega Man Network discovered that the hack, which had been in development for at least three to four years, was finished. Technically, it's on version 0.01, but aside from some potential tweaks down the line, it's in a fully playable state. But before you make your decisions on whether to check this out, please watch a these gameplay videos. Believe me, you're body is soooooo not ready!

These are but the first eight levels. I really don't want to spoil the Cossack and Wily fortresses for you, where the dial goes beyond 10, beyond 11, beyond the limits of logic and reason. We're talking Gurren Lagaan levels of lunacy, my friends.

Sure, the game follows the same plot as Mega Man 4, and sure, you fight the same Robot Masters, but that's where the similarities end. Beneath the surface, so much code has been rewritten, so much extra content has been packed in, that if you were to try to run this on actual NES hardware, you'd probably blow up your house and disrupt the power grid in your neighborhood. All the bosses have wild new attack patterns, enemies from other Mega Man games have been incorporated, and levels are larger and have multiple paths. Hell, there is a miniboss in Ring Man's level that is essentially Lololo and Lalala from Kirby's Dream Land!

Instead of sticking to straight running, gunning, and jumping, MI is always mixing up the game style. You could be hopping on a pogo stick through some mine tunnels, dealing with constantly changing status ailments, or even commandeering enemy craft. One of my favorite parts (minor spoilers) occurs late in the game when you have to fight a series of Robot Master hybrids, fusions of old foes like Quick Man and Wood Man with abilities cribbed from both. Very cool!

When people lament how stale the Mega Man series has gotten, it's not the fault of the property itself but of the minds behind the property who insist on treading the same familiar territory and not truly exploring the possibilities. Rockman 4 Minus Infinity demonstrates what can be done when someone who truly cares is behind the wheel. I urge you all to download the MI patch as well as a Japanese Rockman 4 ROM (track that one down on your own), then get to playing this remarkable achievement right away.

All that glitters is New Super Mario Bros. 2. Nintendo has just released a staggering set of 55 new screen shots illustrating the Coin Rush mode seen previously in trailers. You can also catch a glimpse of a two player Koopaling battle, an underwater level, the P-Wing meter in use, a gold Koopa shell that leaves behind coins when it's kicked, and more.

KOF XIII debuts at EVO, Atlus bringing Persona 4 Arena screenshot

EVO 2012 is this weekend, but I'm sure you already knew that. We're counting the hours here at Destructoid and -- hold on. Wait a minute. Just one more second. It's time to GET HYPE! Atlus is already amped for the festivities, announcing today that in addition to bringing King of Fighters XIII to the Championship Series for its official debut they'll be giving attendees a chance to try their hands at Persona 4 Arena.

If that didn't make you jealous enough as it is, prepare to turn green with envy. All registered KOF XIII participants will be going home with an exclusive Mai Shiranui t-shirt that you probably would never wear in public but probably still want anyway. Probably. So yeah, I'll see you all in Outer Heaven in a couple days, generic t-shirts and all.

Have a taste of the Kirby's Dream Collection bonus CD

Bundled with the Super Mario All-Stars Wii port was a music sampler containing select tracks from the entire series -- nothing all that remarkable. Nintendo stepped its game up on Skyward Sword with a beautiful symphonic CD. For Kirby's Dream Collection, Nintendo is once again pulling a Zelda by including a suite of orchestrated arrangements from Kirby's myriad adventures.

The above is a medley of "Gourmet Race" from Kirby Super Star and "Green Greens" from Kirby's Dream Land -- a mere appetizer of what I hope to be many beautiful songs on the bundled CD. Enjoy!

Crowdfunding platform Gamesplanet Lab has potential

Crowdfunding platform Gamesplanet Lab has potential screenshot

Digital distributor Gamesplanet has partnered with Ulule to carve out a niche in the crowdfunding market with Gamesplanet Lab, a newly launched platform that handles crowdfunding of games, reward fulfillment, and distribution. To get a quick idea of what they're all about, take a look at the charter of commitments.

For instance, Gamesplanet Lab will be handpicking all projects, encouraging developers to use a DRM system that "prioritizes customer experience," and better promoting games with a quality label that gets applied to projects which receive a 70% approval rating or higher from a panel of backers.

Magrunner: Dark Pulse, a first-person puzzle game centered around cyberpunk themes and the Cthulhu mythos, has debuted on the platform and seems to be well on its way to full funding. Pendulo Studios (The Next Big Thing, Yesterday) is also going to be on board with its new game, Day One.

Yes! Namco Bandai totally listened to my complaints. I made this happen, everyone!

Okay, not really but this is still cool news. Namco is re-releasing Dragon Ball Z Budokai and Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 in HD goodness for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Weird that Budokai 2 is getting skipped. Was it really bad?

Dragon Ball Z Budokai HD Collection will be out this Winter in Europe. We've reached out to Namco to find out if the collection will be coming to North America and will let you know if we hear anything.

After what seemed like an eternity, The Walking Dead: Starved for Help, is finally here, and I couldn't be more excited. Not only do I get to play the second installment in what has become my favorite downloadable title this year, we are also being spoiled by Telltale Games yet again with another special guest ... or two.

Tonight we'll be playing through the entirety of Episode 2, while chatting live with the games director and lead choreographer, Dennis Lenart. As if that weren't enough, we'll also be hanging out with the voice actor of Glenn, Nick Herman. It should be an amazing show, so come join us on Dtoid TV, get ready to ask some questions, and enjoy the zombie apocalypse.

Earth Defense Force for Vita gets jetpacks and miniskirts

Earth Defense Force for Vita gets jetpacks and miniskirts screenshot

What could possibly be better than killing robots and giant bugs? Oh, that's right, doing it with a jetpack of course. Word comes from Famitsu that the Palewing character from Earth Defense Force 2 will be making a return in the the forthcoming PlayStation Vita release of Sandlot's ridiculous third-person shooter.

Prepare to rain down a shower of death upon your extraterrestrial enemies whilst sporting a fashionable miniskirt and thigh-length boots. It might be the apocalypse and everything, but apparently that's no excuse to look frumpy for a night on the town. Earth Defense Forces 3 Portable is coming to PlayStation Vita in Japan on September 27. Hey, D3 Publisher? Can we get a North American release date so we don't have to import this thing?

Minecraft 1.3 will merge single-player with multiplayer

Minecraft 1.3 will merge single-player with multiplayer screenshot

With Minecraft version 1.3, which is currently scheduled to release on August 1, 2012, Mojang will make the game's single-player mode a "shell" on top of multiplayer. This step is being taken in advance of the upcoming modding API, and it also means that future bug fixes won't be specific to either mode.

The developer notes that online play itself ought to be a "smoother and more stable experience" as a result of 1.3. Single-player worlds can be shared on your local network and you'll also be able to use new commands similar to those available in multiplayer. The downside? Higher resource requirements.

Optimization is being worked on but might not make it until the next major update. Other notable features of 1.3 include the ability to write in books, tripwire, new terrain features, and the option to start Minecraft with a bonus chest for a quicker start. Here's the full list of what is included.

Final Fantasy VII PC trailer, screens do nothing for me

Final Fantasy VII PC trailer, screens do nothing for me screenshot

I'm pretty pumped about the PC re-release of Final Fantasy VII, but today's accompanying asset bundle does absolutely nothing for me. In my mind I'm picturing a lovely up-rezzed remake that will make my NVIDIA cards sing, but I know that's probably not what we're going to be getting. It's that part of me that looks at this trailer and these boring screenshots and feels underwhelmed.

I mean, the cutscenes are going to look like they did on the PlayStation back in 1997. While I have a soft spot for all the scenes shown in this trailer, they haven't aged well. I guess it will fit nicely with the newer, unwritten PC gaming rule that says that cutscenes must always look worse than the game footage.

And these screenshots -- haven't we seen these 1,000 times? Let's see something new!

The game will run with 1GB of RAM and a 2Ghz processor, so I know I have my hopes (and specs) set too high. Hey, at least there's cloud saves. Cloud? Get it?

Final Fantasy VII is being released to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary, says Square Enix. Low-resolution (and spec) or not, I'm still excited.
