Relic Entertainment celebrates its 15th anniversary

Relic Entertainment celebrates its 15th anniversary screenshot

With all the turmoil centered around layoffs at 38 Studios and BioWare Austin, it's comforting to note that there's some developers out there who have been around a while and go from strength to strength. Such as Vancouver's Relic Entertainment who is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Founded in 1997, they knocked it out of the park with the brilliant outer-space RTS Homeworld. After releasing a sequel, Relic got down to the business of translating Games Workshop's Warhammer 40K universe into the excellent Dawn of War franchise. In 2006, the WWII RTS Company of Heroes was another big hit with fans and critics.

Looking at the company's record, it reads like a list of the best strategy games on PC in over a decade. So congratulations to Relic and here's to another 15 years. Oh, and once Company of Heroes 2 is done, is there maybe a chance of Homeworld 3? Pretty please with sugar on top?

Square announces Mini Ninjas Adventures for Kinect

Seems like Square Enix is going to have one strong year with all of the games they have on the horizon. And now they can one more thing to their ever expanding list with Mini Ninjas Adventures.

The Xbox Live Arcade Kinect game sees you as a ninja fighting across 21 different levels, playing mini-games, and taking on bosses. You'll use the Kinect to control the ninja's weapons with gestures and voice-activated attacks.

Mini Ninjas Adventures will be out on June 29, 2012 for 800 MS Points. Not my style, but looks like it could be fun for the kids. I do find it funny how this has voice-activated attacks, yet Dragon Ball Z for Kinect has zero voice functionality.

The DTOID Show: Dawnguard, Tomb Raider & Dishonored

The DTOID Show: Dawnguard, Tomb Raider & Dishonored screenshot

I love how the week before E3 could totally be a lovely, low-key chance for everyone to rest up before getting punched in the stomach by the biggest industry event in the country. Oh, wait, my mistake. This week is a churning maelstrom of news and leaks and trailers! Oh god, it's everywhere!

But hey, I can't deny there's a lot of cool stuff to point your brain at. Tomb Raider, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim's Dawnguard expansion pack, Dishonored, and Injustice: Gods Among Us all have cool trailers. Konami had their big stinky press conference thing, and they talked about Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and oh, surprise! Dead Space 3 is a thing. Duhhhh.

Chad Concelmo and Jonathan Holmes also make lovely special appearance with their little faces. Mmm. Just can't wait to squeeze those little faces next week.

New trailer, open beta for multiplayer strategy game Fray

If you've been paying attention to our Community Blogs, you may already know a good deal about Fray. You see, the development team, Brain Candy, has been detailing their progress with the game in a series of blogs and videos.

Most recently, they've updated with a new trailer, embedded above, and they are continuing their open beta phase. If you want to sign up for the open beta, just head over to this site and punch in your e-mail.

From the looks of it, the game has a strong Frozen Synapse vibe, but with tile-based movement and with way more visual flair. I will always have room in my library for more intense tactical games like this. Fray is slated to release on June 19th and will be available directly from their site, on Desura, or Steam.

Bethesda wants you to sign up for the Dawnguard beta

Bethesda wants you to sign up for the Dawnguard beta screenshot

Bethesda really likes the way the beta patches have been working on the PC for Skyrim. Because of this, they've decided to extend this over to the Xbox 360 and have opened up beta signups for the new Dawnguard expansion for 360 owners. Just head over to The Elder Scrolls' website and start answering questions about your playtime and character history. Just a friendly reminder, if you have a Bethesda forum account, they'd prefer you to use that.

It's nice to see Bethesda seriously investing in betas for patches lately, especially with some of the earlier patches for Skyrim making the game even more buggy (not to mention their personal history of shipping notoriously buggy games). If you don't care at all about helping make the game more polished, did I mention that if you get into the beta you get a free download code for the expansion? So, you should definitely go sign up for the Dawnguard beta ASAP. I'm sure spots are filling up quickly.

Latest Arma 3 video highlights what's new for E3

Latest Arma 3 video highlights what's new for E3 screenshot

Ahead of E3, Bohemia Interactive has released a developer walkthrough for Arma 3 which highlights some of what will be shown at the convention next week. There's plenty of talk about upgrades to the game's tech in this video, so don't go in expecting a well-scripted sequence full of non-stop action.

That said, holy crap, I legitimately thought the helicopter was going to crash. I'm probably just projecting my own inability to pilot aircraft in videogames again.

With the recent and impressive success of the DayZ mod for Arma 2, I'm more looking forward to what the community can build using Bohemia's latest set of tools than the core solo campaign or even multiplayer. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

There's lots of stabbing in this War of the Roses trailer

There's lots of stabbing in this War of the Roses trailer screenshot

Paradox just released a new trailer for War of the Roses for E3 that shows off some gruesome gameplay, including a little of each different type of combat that will be available to players. There will be swords, bows and arrows, big axes, small axes, and pretty much anything else you want to stab or smash someone in the face with.

With an ex-developer from the Battlefield series leading the dev team, this should be a pretty decent game. It's definitely bloody looking, and that's always a good thing.

Weekend PC download deals: Ultima, Worms, and Aliens

Weekend PC download deals: Ultima, Worms, and Aliens screenshot

This weekend's promo at GOG.com includes two of the biggest PC franchises of the '90s: Ultima 1-8 and Wing Commander 1-4 are all reduced by 50% to $2.99 each. I've never played any of the Wing Commander games, so I'm itching to get Wing Commander IV to experience some FMV'd Malcolm McDowell.

Steam has a pair of offers this weekend; Chris has let you know Saints Row: The Third is reduced, so that leaves Worms Reloaded which is free to play this weekend, as well as reduced by 66%. There's a bewildering amount of packs on offer, so my advice is to just stick with the basic game.

On GamersGate, there is a special aliens-themed weekend promo, which can net you big reductions on Aliens vs. PredatorUniverse at War: Earth AssaultEDF: Insect ArmageddonAlien Shooter, and Stormrise. Origin doesn't seem to be entering into the whole weekend deals, so there's not much to report from their end. As always, if you see any specific deals, post 'em below in the comments.

The Network Roundup: Enough with the bath salts

The Network Roundup: Enough with the bath salts screenshot

For this edition of The Network Roundup, I am making a public plea. No more zombie bath salts jokes! For the last couple days I haven't been able to get on the train, go to work, or especially enter social media without someone cracking some type of zombie bath salts joke. I swear, it's the hottest comedy material since Milli Vanilli! Just get it all out now so we can move on with our weekend.

Destructoid kept on target and away from the pressures of social networking humor with exciting pre-E3 news. Japanator focused on what matters with more mecha face offs. Flixist let us know wether Snow White's massive advertising campaign was money well spent. The Tomopop posse brought us non-other than some more Persona 4 merchandise! The never ending destruction of my wallet! Isn't there some werewolves we can be reporting on?

Metal Gear Rising: Raiden's adventures in unemployment

Just a few days until E3! SO EXCITE!

To hype up the Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance demo that will appear at Konami's E3 booth, Mega64 reminds us of the long road Raiden had to travel since 2008's Metal Gear Solid 4. Like many of us, the volatile job market has meant rough times for ol' Jack, but hopefully he's finally found his niche.

Oh! Apparently, a demo for Rising will also be included in the upcoming Zone of the Enders HD Collection in a move that echoes the MGS2 demo bundled with the original ZoE on PS2! I... was not aware of that. Anybody else know that?

Do you want a sneak peek of the E3 Convention Center?

Of course you do!

I just got back from an early visit to the L.A. Convention Center, home to next week's massive industry event: E3. You may have heard about it.

The final preparations are almost complete, with companies putting the finishing touches on their gigantic, out of control booths. While I was there, workers were everywhere -- painting, gluing, hammering, and doing all types of other manly things.

And while access to the actual show floor is strictly prohibited -- seriously, security is no joke! -- I was able to take a bunch of pictures of the posters, banners, and general decor that will be plastered around the L.A. Convention Center. Check out everything in the gallery! There is some pretty cool stuff to get excited about!

Next week is going to be pretty awesome! Make sure you stick with Destructoid for all your E3 needs!

This Dragon Quest keyboard is daww'some

This Dragon Quest keyboard is daww'some screenshot

I'm not usually keen on posting novelty hardware, but I must admit, I have a deep weakness for Dragon Quest's slimes. As a result, I found this Dragon Quest X-flavored keyboard from Hori too awesome to resist! There's a lot of really cool nuances on this keyboard, like the slimey smiley face on the spacebar, the staircase escape key, the DQ roman numeral keypad, and a ton of other unique icons.

If the F1-12 slime caps look like they'd annoy the hell out of you, just know that you can remove them. I've never imported a piece of hardware before, but I think I may actually bite for this thing when it drops in August. The keyboard will cost ¥3,980 (approximately $50 US), and will come with a temporary in-game XP and gold boost for Dragon Quest X.

Hopefully we'll get some news on Dragon Quest X's western plans soon!

Penny Arcade's Rain Slick Precipice 3 arrives July 10th

Penny Arcade's Rain Slick Precipice 3 arrives July 10th screenshot

The third installment in the Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, currently in development by retro-RPG maker Zeboyd Games (Breath of Death VII, Cthulhu Saves the World), now has a firm date with destiny. The game will be releasing on Steam and Xbox Live Indie Games July 10 and will be priced at $4.99 (or 400 MSP).

I'm very happy to know that the story Jerry Holkins started in the first game is going to see a conclusion in the same medium it started in. I appreciated the effort he put forth in writing content on the Penny Arcade website to close the series when it was determined that future installments would not be coming out of Hothead Studios, but this is what I really wanted.

Well, not quite; I would have probably preferred to have Hothead finish the trilogy series for consistency's sake but, hell, take what you can get. I'd hardly call it "settling" to get another game from Zeboyd.

E3: Hitman: Absolution snags the coveted South Hall steps

E3: Hitman: Absolution snags the coveted South Hall steps screenshot

The South Hall is the larger of the two main halls at the L.A. Convention Center (the other being the West Hall). While the "Big Three" companies (Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony) are in the West Hall, they take up almost all the space! The South Hall is huge and filled with almost every other company attending E3.

The entrance to the South Hall is large and open, with a huge staircase leading up to the show floor. Every year, one game is advertised on these steps with one of those cool posters separated in pieces that can only be viewed at a distance. Usually this game is highly anticipated and ends up being one of the most talked-about games at the show!

In the past, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has graced the steps, as well as Final Fantasy XIII.

This year, the honor goes to Hitman: Absolution! I may be the only one excited about this piece of news, but I strangely look forward to seeing who gets this prime spot every year. It is such an expansive, creative piece of advertising on such a grand scale that I can't help but get excited!

I get excited a lot.

E3 is in only a few days! Stick with Destructoid all week long!

This weekend on Dtoid TV: Awdamn Wars ft. Nicholas Cage

This weekend on Dtoid TV: Awdamn Wars ft. Nicholas Cage screenshot

Awdamn is flush with midi-chlorians this weekend, and it's manifesting in a solid block of Star Wars games. I'll admit, this doesn't actually have anything to do with Nicholas Cage, I just really wanted to use that image. Catch Substituted Reality each night this weekend for a different dose of Star Wars action.

This is the weekend leading up to E3, and everyone on Dtoid TV is getting hype. Philanthr0py is about to say goodbye to Ashley Graham forever as he strives to finish Resident Evil 4 on Chill with Phil. I am doing my first solo broadcast on Dtoid TV since forever ago as I play Binding of Isaac: Wrath of the Lamb on Rad Show: Get There! And Saturday Morning Hangover is taking a trip into the timey-wimey with Doctor Who: The Infinity Clock. Catch the full schedule below.

King Foom is looking to relax some more before E3 week. It's going to be A.D.D. Friday with free-to-play games on Mash Tactics, tonight at 4p.m. Pacific.

Substituted Reality is Destructoid's only PC exclusive gaming show, hosted by lovably offbeat caster, Awdamn, and airing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8p.m. Tonight, Awdamn is gettin' his learn on in Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Academy. Saturday night, the forces come out in Star Wars Battlefront II multiplayer. Sunday night, Awdamn is pushing it real good in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Penis.

Saturday Morning Hangover with Conrad Zimmerman and Jordan Devore airs from 10a.m. to 12p.m. Pacific. Come watch as they play the latest Xbox Live Indie Games demos for your enjoyment, and revel in the beauty of Conrad's mustache! This week, Conrad and Jordan are getting temporally displaced in Doctor Who: The Infinity Clock.

Hang out with Destructoid Contributors Brett Zeidler and Caitlin Cooke every Saturday at 12p.m. Pacific as they play through entire games with a focus on co-op. It’s a safe bet that Cait is probably going to get mad at Brett for everything at some point. This week, the perilous pair are playing The Ship-- wait, what?

Chill with Phil airs this and every Saturday at 4p.m. Pacific. Phil is going strong in his playthrough of the entire Resident Evil series. This Saturday, Phil hopes to finish out his run of Resident Evil 4, so he can say good bye to Ashley forever... and prepare for Sheva.

Super Fantastic Videogame Rad Show: Get There! starring Johnny Luchador and Bill Zoeker airs every Sunday at 4p.m. Pacific. Rad Show takes a light-hearted approach to gaming, with the guys usually focusing more on breaking games for ridiculous results than completing feats of skill. This Sunday, Johnny Luchador has been called to have mystical adventures with monster truck wizards, which leaves yours truly alone to play Binding of Isaac or something.

Retroactive centers around the games of yesteryear. Every Sunday at 6p.m. Pacific, and Monday at 8p.m. Pacific, its host, Crux adventures through nostalgic games on the consoles of his childhood. Sunday night, Crux is spinning his cape around in Super Mario World for the SNES. Monday night, Crux is cheating by playing Doom 2 on XBLA.
