Getting down with the Wagner in PlanetSide 2

Sony Online Entertainment is getting ready to get epic yet again with their upcoming MMOFPS PlanetSide 2. They claim thousands of players will be able to take part in enormous ground and air battles across massive continents that can last for days or weeks, hence requiring alliances with others and long term strategy. Furthermore, there are extensive customisation options, from extensive skill trees and free-form class-based systems, to customising soldiers, weapons and vehicles.

To top it off, the guys at SOE decided to show off some footage with a new gameplay video playing to the unmistakeably classic and memorable piece - Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner, most probably taking homage from this, rather than say this, or this.

The story will be penned by Marvel's Blade creator Marv Wolfman, who has already worked with SOE on DC Universe Online. For those who are interested, you can sign up for the beta right now at the official website, and get ready to make some pretty explosions just like in the vid above.

Official Kirby doodles from way back in the day

Back in 1993, a strategy guide for the recently released Kirby's Adventure appeared in Japan. Inside, three of the big men responsible for the new game decided to sketch the little pink puffball. There's contributions by Masahiro Sakurai, the father of the Kirby series; Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's whiz kid; and Satoru Iwata, back when he was the president of HAL Laboratory.

It's adorable to see the masters take a crack at doodling such a loveable character. It's also worthy to note that Iwata's doodle looks like sh*t. That makes me laugh for some reason.

Sup Holmes: Games, Comics, and Curation Spooky Squid

[Destructoid's Director of Communications Hamza Aziz asked Jonathan Holmes to make a show called 'Sup, Holmes?' so that Destructoid could later sell a t-shirt that says 'Sup, Holmes?' on it. This is that show. Download the audio-only podcast version, subscribe to the podcast feed and find more episodes here.]

This week on Sup Holmes? we have Miguel Sternberg from Spooky Squid games, developer of the upcoming games They Bleed Pixels and Guerrilla Gardening: Seeds of Revolution, and the curuator of the recent Comics Vs. Games event (featuring the work of Dtoid alumni Ashley Davis and Linzb0t, as well as many other fantastic artists).

We'll be talking to Miguel about all that and more. Personally, I want to know how he feels about Bastion ripping off his idea for context based, in-game narration. I bet he'll be all humble about it, because he is a humble dude. Tune into the live stream starting on Sunday, May 27th at 1pm PST/4pm EST and ask us some stuff!

The DSi comes to life, gets rubbed, and fights the R4

This video is pretty ancient, and has since been followed up by many more topical entries in the ongoing life of the DS console. Still, I had to post this one first, because it's the best.

It's tough to say anything else without ruining some of the fun. In fact, I'm worried I've already said to much. So please enjoy this thing!

Make some ch-ch-changes in Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition

Though The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition came out over a month ago, full of tweaks and additional content,  the guys at Warner Bros. and CD Projekt are still trying to keep the PR train going.

As level designer Jonas Mattsson states, CD Projekt's aim in life is to create complex and wonderful RPGs. For them, there are two pillars to ensure this. One - to create a very interesting story. And two - give players choices that will have impactful consequences on every facet of the game in some way or form, whether it be the fate of a particular character no matter how big or small they are in regards to the central plot, the places you are able to visit and what will surround you when you get there, and the many possible outcomes during and at the end of your journey.

The video shows a small snippet of the possible differences that can occur whenever you make a key decision, some overtly visible, others very subtle. On the one hand, seeing all these possibilities is a sight to behold and is something in my mind CD Projekt should be commended for by providing us with such rich replayability value and illustrating their passion towards their games. On the other hand, it's frustrating to know that I'll probably never see most of these endings myself as I simply don't have the time. And watching them all on youtube doesn't count folks.

What do y'all think? You a fan of such intricacies? Or are these just cosmetic touches that you don't care about?

Videogame-inspired gas masks? Now I've seen everything!

Brian Cargile is another talented young artist with an extreeeeemely specific area of expertise. As you can see, he specializes in masks: gas masks, goggles, full face masks, you name it. As a one-man costume design house called TwoHornsUnited, he sells these bizarre creations for upwards of $280 a pop. That may sound like a hefty chunk of change, but hey, the goods are moving, so he must be doing something right!

Though the bulk of his masks -- which you can check out on his deviantART and Facebook pages -- are original designs, Brian likes to draw inspiration from videogames now and then. Below, you will find his Pokeball and Hylian masks, as well as the big poppa, the Portal Gun mask. The latter is certainly among the more inventive interpretations of the iconic weapon.

If you happen to be attending METROCON in Tampa this June, Brian will be selling the Zelda and Portal masks there. In the meanwhile, gaze upon the gallery in wonder!

I can't quite picture Sephiroth as a pencil pusher

I'm going to go out limb and say that, following the end of the song, Sephiroth murdered the entire building then pissed on the ashes.

"One Winged Office" is the latest tune from Random Encounters, and it proposes the idea that the members of SOLDIER were nothing more than genetically enhanced cubicle monkeys for Shinra's corporate offices. Technically, Sephiroth is working out of a storage closet rather than a cubical. I can relate -- at my last office job, I literally worked in the room where all the surplus furniture and equipment was stored. They also kept downgrading my computer to crappier and crappier models.

Such a welcoming environment, to be sure.

Before we get this party underway, lemme clear up something from last week: as it turns out, Jackie Chan is NOT retiring from action films. Crisis averted? Well, all my other fears still stand, so not entirely.

But never mind that, because there's a Rufio film in development! You remember, Rufio? Dante "motherf*ckin' Prince Zuko" Basco? Yeah, I'm on board with anything based around the greatest character from Hook... and perhaps all of film history.

Today, Holly Green chats with chiptune group Men of Mega in the first entry of our new Dtoid Spotlight interview series, Jim Sterling asks YOU what's the deal with Diablo III's Auction House, Alasdair Duncan reviews The Dream Machine, the Wii U is / is not more powerful than a plate of crackers, and Zone of the Enders 3 is really real, hallelujah!
