This Mario Paint art is so good that it pisses me off

This Mario Paint art is so good that it pisses me off screenshot

Check out this Mario Paint artwork by RuiZinen. This is the real deal, folks, done with the real deal Mario Paint mouse, and not with some beefed up PC version. All the images you see in this video are digital camera snaps of a television screen that a Super Famicom playing Mario Paint was connected to.

The work is so good that it pisses me off! Doesn't it piss you off? All I can do now is think about all the time I spent trying to create something at least somewhat decent and never quite succeeding. I even sucked at the music side of it and I'm a musician! As the images came up in this video I just kept screaming "seriously!?" at my computer screen. They're that good.

There's plenty of great Nintendo character art in this video, but I really dig some of the Castlevania stuff, and all of the black and white art is fantastic.

I hate this guy. I hope he makes more.

The DTOID Show: 38 Layoffs, Zone Of The Enders, & Horses

Hey guys, if you missed today's LIVE LIVE LIVE Destructoid Show, here it is. Tara's out -- I honestly have no idea where she went -- but Anthony Carboni was good enough to fill in.

The big news today: Indie Game The Movie coming to home video and stuff, horseback combat in Skyrim, a new Zone Of The Enders title in the works, Deadlight looks great, Jet Set Radio coming to Vita, Crimson Dragon looking familiar, and 38 Studios is in a nasty situation.

Also, here's a Harry Potter For Kinect. Guess what it's about.

Turbocross mode comes to Super Monday Night Combat

Not everyone who got fairly into Uber Entertainment's Monday Night Combat should go in expecting to immediately fall in love with Super Monday Night Combat due to its increased focus on strategic play. That said, if multiplayer online battle arenas aren't your cup of tea, don't write off SMNC just yet.

Uber has added a new game mode, Turbocross, which seems like a nice middle ground. Most notably, turrets are rebuildable, player movement is quicker, damage is more lethal, and passive powers from leveling have been removed. The end result should be faster-paced matches and a more intuitive feel for newcomers.

Additionally, you can now give your character a mustache. All is right with the world indeed.

These Zone of the Enders HD screens make me so happy

These Zone of the Enders HD screens make me so happy screenshot

When I woke up today, I had no idea I would not only see one, but two Zone of the Enders-related news today. Of course, the hottest news was that Kojima Productions has officially started working on the third entry in the series. Also making the rounds today is a handful of Zone of the Enders HD Collection screenshots.

As it stands, I think both Zone of the Enders titles still look fantastic, but that visual boost to 720p with replaced visual effects makes them just that much better. ZoE HD Collection will also boast 60 frames per second and come with much higher quality sound effects and music. Sunrise has put together a brand-new opening animation for the collection as well. A premium version of the collection will come in a special case with a remix CD and two booklets (one that encompasses the booklets from the original releases, and the other which covers the development of the HD release).

It was a good day to be a Zone of the Enders fan. Anyone else have their fingers crossed for a worldwide release of October 25th? To celebrate, I think I might dust off my copy of the original Zone of the Enders and pop it in tonight. It's been far too long.

Weekend PC download deals: Company of Heroes, Civ V screenshot

Free games is the theme on Steam this weekend, so if you're keen to try something new for no money down, you're in luck. On offer is the the strategy brilliance of Civilization V and the intense WWII multiplayer FPS Red Orchestra 2; both games are free to play this weekend and are reduced by 75% along with all their DLC.

If you're no fan of Steam, don't fret: GamersGate also have Civ V plus DLC reduced by 75% on their service, along with a big Spring Sale that has 75% off Metro 2033 and Just Cause, along with the Company of Heroes franchise which is reduced by 80%. Oh, and errr ... Daikatana is 75% off in case you are interested.

EA thankfully have emailed users to tell them about the sales on Origin but the limited catalog is starting to become really obvious. There's 50% off "Classic Titles" but good luck identifying which games are in the offer. GOG.com have a mixed bag of titles reduced by 50% this weekend including Soulbringer, Commandos, and Guilty Gear X2 Reloaded. As always, if you find some good deals this weekend, post them in the comments.

The Network Roundup: Get your grill on

The Network Roundup: Get your grill on screenshot

Memorial Day weekend always signifies some poignent things for me. Remembering those who serve for our freedom, plenty of rest, and a whole lot of grilling delicious meats are always on the agenda. I'm far from being an outdoorsy type or person, but for some reason this weekend seems to pull me away from the TV and has me obsessed with dining al fresco. What's you weekend plans?

Destructoid reported that Demon's Souls online service wasn't going to be a fond memory, but would continue on, allowing us to die on forever. Japanator brought back the Fighting Fridays keeping us cheering for our favorite team. Flixist is closing out the fabulous Wes Anderson Week. Finally, Tomopop has some delightful combinations of two of my favorite things --burgers and figures. Enjoy the freedom of grilling this long weekend, and don't forget those who made it all possible.

Bullet For My Valentine headed to Rock Band this Tuesday

Bullet For My Valentine headed to Rock Band this Tuesday screenshot

When I first saw that Bullet For My Valentine was coming to Rock Band 3, I somehow managed to confuse them with My Bloody Valentine (alt-rock darlings from the very early 90's). But then I saw the tracklist and thought, "Wait, 'Tears Don't Fall' isn't by My Bloody Valentine." So, I looked up the music video and realized I was off. Like, not even close. Oh well, the video had 40M views, so I'm assuming there's at least a few people out there who love them. Here's the songs that are coming to Rock Band 3 on May 29th:

  • Bullet For My Valentine – “Tears Don’t Fall”
  • Bullet For My Valentine – “Scream Aim Fire”
  • Bullet For My Valentine – “Your Betrayal”

As always, the pack will be 440 Microsoft Points, 550 Wii Points, and $5.49 on PSN. Each individual track will cost you 160 Microsoft Points, 220 Wii Points, or $1.99 on PSN. "Your Betrayal" is available as a Pro Guitar or Bass upgrade for just a dollar more.

Awesomenauts theme song released, patch details revealed

Posted: 25 May 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Awesomenauts theme song released, patch details revealed screenshot

I've played Awesomenauts at least once every day since it released and I'm still having a hell of a good time. And, much as I expected, I've never skipped the opening sequence because it provides an excuse to hear the totally bitchin' opening theme.

Today, Ronimo Games has released the extended version of that theme, so that I might just queue it up in my playlist and run it on loop for a week, alienating everyone around me. It's full of even more synthesizer-laden power rock and you can have it too! All they're asking in return is that you help spread the word a bit by making a post on Facebook or Twitter through a "Pay with a Tweet" link they have set up.

If you dig that, Sonic Picnic (the artists behind the music in Awesomenauts) will be releasing the full soundtrack, featuring all the awesome individual character tracks on Bandcamp next week. I am ready for joy.

In addition to releasing the title track, Ronimo also gave a little bit of information on some of the tweaks to the game which will be coming in its first patch. Leon will have adjustments to his slowing effects and tongue, for example, though Ronimo doesn't indicate how or in what direction those changes might go. Personally, I find Leon's ability to slow enemies not as effective as increasing damage or speed of attack, but I have seen plenty of players make excellent use it (particularly when working in concert with teammates).

Voltar's drones and healing will also see adjustment, which are a both a bit too effective for my liking and I'm hoping they'll be softened a touch. A skilled Voltar player can push through just about anything in short order, as he has one of the fastest means of earning Solar and can quickly upgrade abilities.

Other tweaks include Yuri's Time Bubble (another slowing effect; I've never had much use for it) and Froggy G's Whirlwind Shield, popular with players who'll dive into a mass of enemies and then use the shield to block enemy fire, deal damage and escape largely unscathed. Finally, some upgrades are going to be replaced entirely and I'm dying to know what those might be.

It's great to see Ronimo supporting the game so fervently. They're having a little get-together at their offices in the Netherlands this Saturday and are inviting high level, experienced players to come by and check out the new build, featuring the balance tweaks and new content. I'm immensely jealous of anybody who will be in attendance, as Ronimo still has no projected release date for the patch and I need it. I need it now.

This weekend on Destructoid TV, we have guns, funs, and possibly even the runs. Okay, that was too much information. My point is, we've got a hell of a weekend for you. Saturday Morning Hangover is playing the grandaddy of all beat 'em ups, River City Ransom. Philanthr0py is taking over Mash Tactics again with some A.D.D. Friday. And Awdamn is kicking ass and chewing bubblegum in War Inc. Battlezone.

Rad Show host, Johnny Luchador is a big fan of squad-based shooters, and has been waiting on bated boner for this release. Tune in this Sunday, and watch Lucha break his beloved game for all to see!

It's time for the fan-favorite Phil In Show with the "Bearded Mastodon", Philanthr0py. At 4p.m. Pacific today, Phil is doing some viewer choice A.D.D. play, starting out with some Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 on XBLA.

Substituted Reality is Destructoid's only PC exclusive gaming show, hosted by lovably offbeat caster, Awdamn, and airing every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8p.m. Tonight, Awdamn slicing up chumps in Assassin's Creed: Revelations. Saturday night will be some free-to-play shooting action with War Inc. Battlezone. And Awdamn is rounding out the weekend with his beloved Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Come watch as they play the latest Xbox Live Indie Games demos for your enjoyment, and revel in the beauty of Conrad's mustache! This week, Conrad and Jordan are kicking it old school with some River City Ransom. Barf!

Super Fantastic Videogame Rad Show: Get There! starring Johnny Luchador and Bill Zoeker airs every Sunday at 4p.m. Pacific. Rad Show takes a light-hearted approach to gaming, with the guys usually focusing more on breaking games for ridiculous results than completing feats of skill. This Sunday, Rad Show is taking war to the next level in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

Retroactive centers around the games of yesteryear. Every Sunday at 6p.m. Pacific, and Monday at 8p.m. Pacific, its host, Crux adventures through nostalgic games on the consoles of his childhood. Review: The Dream Machine

Posted: 25 May 2012 10:00 AM PDT

Review: The Dream Machine screenshot

Episodic gaming was championed by Valve, but after no sign of Half Life episode 3 or even any SiN episodes after the first one (remember that?) it was Telltale who showed gamers that the episodic method of distribution could work with their revitalising of old adventure game classics.

Now Swedish indie team Cockroach Inc has released the first chapters of its adventure game The Dream Machine, a mix of traditional point 'n click gameplay and a lovingly hand crafted visual style. With 3/5's of the game currently available, will you be tempted to wait for more?

The Dream Machine (PC)
Developer: Cockroach Inc
Publisher: Cockroach Inc
Released: May 11, 2012
MRSP: £11.99 (Chapters 1-5), £6.98 (Chapters 1-3)

First of all, I need to point out that my review copy only features chapters 1 to 3 of the full five chapters that will be available. These are the only chapters that are available for purchase through Steam and via the game's website. There's no official release date for chapters 4 and 5 yet.

The Dream Machine's story centres around Victor and Alicia Neff, a young and married couple who have just moved to a new apartment in the city from their former country abode. Whilst settling in, Victor finds a cryptic note that sets him on a path that puts the couple in danger, as they uncover the secrets that lurk in their new home. There's a real believability to Victor and Alicia's married life; at one point Alicia asks her husband if he would like "the truth or some appeasing bullshit" in relation to a simple question.

The Dream Machine is neatly split into three chapters so far. The first concerns uncovering the mysterious origins of the house and it's owner, Mr Morton. Chapters 2 and 3 involve Victor travelling into the dreams of various people in order to rescue them from a malignant force. Chapter 1 does well in establishing the characters and the story; Chapters 2 and 3 transport Victor into some imaginative dream scenarios with some striking imagery. Whilst Chapter 1 is feels fairly short, mainly due to it's easy puzzles, Chapters 2 and 3 increase the difficulty despite their limited playing areas.

It's also where the game falls into some of the usual trappings of an adventure game. Whilst Chapter 2 is fairly straightforward, Chapter 3 introduces sub-tasks for Victor to solve, like hunting down ingredients for cocktails and figuring out a way to teach some unruly kitchen staff a lesson. Unfortunately this means Victor's inventory becomes bloated and quite unwieldy. There's also an overabundance of dialogue options; often five or more are available to Victor, but it feels like a lot of that could be streamlined. There's nothing wrong with the dialogue -- it manages to make superficially similar characters in Chapter 3 stand out from each other -- it's just that there's an awful lot of it. Dialogue trees will nest even more options and this feels a little overwhelming.

Whilst the a large chunk of the puzzles in the game are the usual "combine items" and "give combined item to person" type of challenges, they never became same-y or predictable, until later in the third chapter where I felt I was trying to solve a particular puzzle purely by trial and error. Likewise, a few puzzles are composed of talking to various people via an intercom, which mixes in an amount of trial and error with a lot of dialogue options. The 3rd chapter of the game is probably the most involving but it feels a little over long.

Like many of the recent adventure games, such as Yesterday and The Book of the Unwritten Tale, this is a very standard point-and-click game. Items are collected and stored in your inventory at the top of the screen. You'll interact with other characters in the same way, clicking to speak or just engage with them. Whilst there is no way to highlight objects, the areas in the game aren't over-filled with useless objects cluttering up the screen. There's some nice touches in the UI; a pair of footsteps will show where Victor can walk to and any object you hover over will display a description at the bottom of the screen.

Then of course there's the look of the game; it's no understatement to say that The Dream Machine really stands out from other titles, and not because of its high resolution graphics or highly stylised pixel art. Rather, the game's graphics are all sculpted from hand made materials and are stop motion animated. There's an almost child-like quality to the visuals, as if the landscapes and characters are toys that have been willed into life. When there's a close up of an object or an item, you can see the imperfections that come with being handmade; port holes aren't perfectly round, there's finger prints on clay, the clouds are clearly cotton wool. Yet this all adds to the charm of the game, and it shows that a clear love and craft has gone into The Dream Machine.

Whilst I had my issues with some of the puzzles and the pacing of the last chapter, I still really want to see where this story goes. The Dream Machine has it's hook in my mouth, and I'm really excited to see the dreamscapes that are conjured up in the next two chapters.

Anarchy Reigns now has no release date in the US/EU

Anarchy Reigns now has no release date in the US/EU screenshot

Remember Anarchy Reigns? That action brawler that myself, and a ton of other Platinum Games fans are really excited for? Even though it has already been delayed, Platinum Games' video show "PG Break" just announced today that there is now no set release date for the game worldwide other than Japan, where it will still launch as planned on July 5th, 2012.

The episode also announces the remaining two characters in the game (which are viewable below in the gallery), as well as a few extra tidbits on other Platinum Games happenings, such as their involvement in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

PG Break notes that SEGA is responsible for changing the date to "TBC" (to be confirmed). Whether or not this is a business decision in order to avoid potential competition in July, or if this is an issue with the localization itself is unknown. Either way, it looks like big butt fans will have to wait a little while longer.

Dtoid Spotlight: Men of Mega

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Dtoid Spotlight: Men of Mega screenshot

This spotlight kicks off a multi-part series highlighting videogame fans and community members who make us go nuts. What better way to start things off this upcoming Blipfest weekend than with Netherlands-based chiptune artists Bart Youngsters and Dan McClay, aka Men of Mega, who'll be performing during the event? (If you're not familiar with their head-bobbin' blend of chiptune beats, you can get all caught up by visiting their SoundCloud page. My personal favorites: "Murphy" and "John Stamos On Meth".)

I sent the guys (er, Men) a few questions about their tunes and their love for games, and quite enjoyed the nostalgia ride that followed.

How did you two first meet? When did you begin writing and performing together?

Bart: Dan and I met almost 10 years ago when we were colleagues at this shitty job. It did not take long before we found out that we shared the same passion for punk rock, skateboarding/BMX, alcoholic beverages and Nintendo. We used to listen to an awful lot of .nsf files back then. However, we did not start writing and performing before 2010. Our first songs were written using Famitracker, a free tracker for PC which mimics the Nintendo 8-bit sound chip. We had our first gig in October 2010, at the open mic of EINDBAAS, the biggest chiptune party in the Netherlands. After that we were asked to join the EINDBAAS on TOUR lineup, including Kanagawa (Failotron's band) and DS-10 Dominator. We did nine shows in three months and that really got things going for us. Right now we’re performing quite a lot, and not only [at] chiptune shows, so that is pretty cool.

What are your favorite 8-bit-era games (besides the obvious one, of course)?

Bart: I know it is an obvious big one, but I have to mention that I am a huge Metroid fan. I love that game as well as all Metroid games released afterward. Super Metroid for the Super NES is still my favorite videogame ever. And also, the Prime series released on the GameCube and Wii [is] awesome.

I really enjoyed games like Double Dragon II and Street Gangs (or River City Ransom, as the NTSC version is called) both released by Technos Japan. Nintendo World Cup by Technos Japan was also hilarious. I never understood why Nintendo would license their name to a “soccer game” in which foul play is encouraged, haha! I played a lot of Metal Gear: although rather frustrating at moments, that game was really deep for its time and highly enjoyable. R.C. Pro-am is an often-overlooked gem on the NES. I had tons of fun with that title. And what I never really understood is that people seem to dislike Zelda II. Man, I love that game! It is so freaking hard! Concerning the platform genre, Kirby, Snake Rattle n Roll and Adventure Island II were my favorites on the NES (next to the obvious and utterly brilliant Mario 1, 2 and 3, Mega Man 1, 2 and 3, Castlevania, Kid Icarus, Duck Tales...)

Dan: Aside from the obvious Mario, Zelda, Mega Man and Castlevania titles, I've played a lot of games like the Battle of Olympus, Faxanadu, Wizards and Warriors; I was (and still am) quite into the whole fantasy adventure genre. I've also played the crap out of the first TMNT game, still one of my favourite NES titles, although I could never beat the final level. Same with the Ninja Gaiden titles. My affection for fantasy RPGs really started with SNES games like Soul Blazer, the Secret of Mana (and Evermore), shifted to fantastic PS1 RPGs like Suikoden, the Final Fantasy series and such, and now I really feel like playing some Skyrim!

Are there any other chiptune performers that you consider an influence? What other musical acts inspire your sound?

Bart: Concerning chiptune performers, we consider Bit Shifter a huge influence: it is unbelievable [how] he pushes his Game Boy. When it comes to real game music composers, we’re huge fans of Hip Tanaka. Furthermore, I love An0va, Kanagawa, Infinity Shred, and RoccoW, this insane talented young dude from the Netherlands...

Next to chiptune we listen a lot to nineties punk rock such as Lagwagon, No Use For a Name, Pulley, Ten Foot Pole, and Millencolin. Right now I am listening to heavier stuff such as Veil of Maya, Defeater, Carpathian, All Shall Perish, and older hardcore bands like Slapshot and 7seconds. But a huge influence and my favorite band of all time remains The Postal Service.

Dan: Chiptune influence-wise, I agree with Bart; all those acts are brilliant! Lately I've been listening to Prof. Sakamoto a lot -- his music is so reminiscent of good old video game music, I love it! As well as Xyce, another chip act from the Netherlands (shout out!), good stuff! Punk rock, as Bart mentioned, something I will probably never get tired of, but I also really like to listen to some Final Fantasy VII, IX or XII music while working, great soundtracks. Aside from that my musical interests are pretty broad, some blues or jazz now and then, classical, bluegrass, you name it!

What tools do you use to produce your sound?

Bart: We use Ableton Live and a VST plugin called Plogue Chipsounds, which mimics a lot of the classic sound chips, such as the SID chip (C64), Game Boy sound chip, and NES sound chip. These are also the three sound chips we use most of the time. We also use two Nintendo Game Boys and appropriate tracking software called Little Sound DJ (LSDJ). I also started experimenting with my Game Boy Advance and Nanoloop 2.5, but that is more for fun and until now I did not release anything. Maybe in the future.

Dan: While Ableton with the Chipsounds VST is really awesome and gives you so much control, I've fallen head over heels with Little Sound DJ. Something about creating and performing music with your Game Boy. Really wonderful! Our upcoming EP titled “The power to take into account (perplexity and consultation) and the power to arrange in rank order (hierarchy and institution): a musical study of socio-technical controversies through LSDJ by the Men of Mega” will be produced in full by using Game Boy (release date is set for June, sample track here).

Where can fans see you perform?

Bart: We’re playing two gigs in New York City in May. Tuesday, May 28, we’re playing MINT JAMS 2K12: OFFICIAL BLIP FESTIVAL AFTERPARTY @ 285 KENT, together with Knife City, Sabrepulse, Doomcloud, Smiletron, Roccow and a very special guest that is going to blow your socks off. Wednesday, May 29, we’re playing the Trashbar in Brooklyn, together with Minusbaby, Deadbeatblast, Roccow and Rioteer.

May 31, we’re back in Holland again, playing the EKKO in Utrecht. For the summer we’re working hard on some cool gigs, and not only in Holland. So like our Facebook page and stay up to date! We can also be reached on Twitter, and Bandcamp.

Friday Night Fights: The power of teamwork

Friday Night Fights: The power of teamwork screenshot

It's amazing what we can accomplish when we work together, no? Whether we're building human pyramids out of naked prisoners or rioting through the streets when our favorite sports team wins/loses the big sports game, our true potential is only ever reached through the power of teamwork.

The same can be said for our virtual lives, as well. Lucky for us, then, that teaming up with our fellow gamers to take down bosses or objectives has grown increasingly popular as of late! Be it in RPGs like Diablo III, shooters like Battlefield 3, or something in between, gamers the world over take up arms with one another every day to fight the good fight for the simple sake of accomplishing what we can't do alone. And thanks to things like Rockstar's new Social Club and Battlefield's new Platoon system, ganging up with like-minded gamers is only ever a click away. Technology kicks ass!

Well, until it kills us all, anyway. But who the hell knows when that's gonna happen?

Friday Night Fights

New to FNF? Read this! Each week, a bunch of us Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! It's a 100% community-run event, so feel free to join in or even host something yourself!

The planning for FNF starts in the forums, where community members volunteer to host matches and post their pertinent details (game, time, Gamertag, etc.). Then, every Friday, reminder posts go up in the community blogs followed by a recap post here on the front page for last-minute planning.

To join in, simply send a friend request to the match host! If you'd rather host something yourself, sound off in the comments section below! We'll see you online!

A behind-the-scenes look at Hitman: Sniper Challenge

The Question: Diablo III's Auction House, good or bad?

The Question: Diablo III's Auction House, good or bad? screenshot

[Every Friday (or whenever), Destructoid will pose topical a question to the community. Answer it if you want!]

So Diablo III has been out for the past week, accrued over six million sales, and generated a ton of controversy. Many millions of players clearly love the game and refuse to let the problems get in the way of their fun. Others have been pissed off by the DRM and balancing issues, but still maintained it's enjoyable. Then there are those who have had a hardline, "Screw this game" stance.

The most controversial aspect of the game may prove to be the Real Money Auction House, in which players can exchange their cash for loot. We've already seen how it works with the in-game currency, though the opportunity to use actual dollars seems to be a ways away. As for what we have now, do you believe it's a bold new step for the series, or something that's killed the fun of finding loot for yourself? Is it an improvement, or an undermining setback?

Personally, I find the current auction house somewhat interesting. I kind of like the way you can share loot for gold, especially when I make a decent sale myself. That said, I have a feeling that, once the best items are inevitably locked behind real money, I'll politely stop playing. I'm not into the idea of freemium models in games that carry an MSRP, and I don't quite fancy dancing to Blizzard's tune on that. I've had my fun for the initial price. I just feel like buying as much as possible with in-game gold while I still can, since I've a feeling the real cash will take pride of place once it's implemented.

That's just me. What about you? Do you like the Auction House, or do you wish it never existed? We must know!

4J talks future Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition updates

4J talks future Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition updates screenshot

Speaking to OXM about the future of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, 4J Studios' Paddy Burns said that the team is "working with Daniel Kaplan at Mojang to define what is going in to the Xbox version, but the aim is to include as many of the PC features that make sense on the Xbox as possible."

The first update is said to get the game up to version 1.7.3, but that's only the beginning. 4J is looking to eventually bring the so-called Adventure Update content to Xbox 360 players. This was the one that included Creative mode, Endermen, expanded combat mechanics, and a whole lot more.

Having not touched the Xbox 360 Edition yet, I feel like the odd man out. It's the second most-played game on the console right now. That shouldn't be surprising, but after looking at the titles Minecraft surpassed to get there, I don't know how else to react.
