Sonic and friends adorn this Christmas tree

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 02:00 PM PST

Sonic and friends adorn this Christmas tree screenshot

The folks at 8bitfix have a holiday tradition. For the past couple of years, they've decorated their Christmas tree with Perler Bead sprites -- the first was a general gaming tree, the second was Mega Man-themed. This year, it's all about the Sonic series. Characters represented include Sonic (of course) in his various incarnations and poses, the Chaotix, the Wisps from Sonic Colors, classic Robotnik, and more. Beneath the tree is a bunch of Jazwares Sonic figurines. There's even a Super Sonic wreath!

There's a tinge of sadness to this story, however. One staff member's father came in to help decorate and admire the tree. The next morning, he passed away. At least he was able to share in one final Christmas memory with his family.

Destructoid's PlayStation Vita Unboxing Video

I know that you've probably already seen other unboxing videos for the Japanese PS Vita, but let me sell you on ours. Sorry about the wait on this. You can blame holiday shipping delays.

First, I'm not a mouth breather that is going to mumble my way thorough this thing. Also, I just get it over with, with none of the silly savoring of the box details or manuals. Who cares about that crap anyway? Finally, I also show off some of the game boxes and memory card. You know, a real quick thing.

We'll get into the detailed stuff after Christmas. Enjoy!

More Battlefield fun with Corridor Digital & Freddie Wong

More Battlefield fun with Corridor Digital & Freddie Wong screenshot

The mighty tag team of Freddie Wong and Corridor Digital made a television commercial for Battlefield 3 not that long ago. They pumped out that video so quickly that had plenty of leftover time to do pretty much whatever. With access to that set and all that equipment, who wouldn't try to make the most of it all?

Their free time went into another pair of Battlefield-inspired videos. The first one above, made by Corridor Digital, is the more fun one, in my opinion. Similar to the team's defibrillator video, this one champions the multipurpose functionality of the repair tool. After the jump is Freddie Wong's video, a co-op scenario that builds upon his previous Battlefield 4 concept. Enjoy!

What's this Dreadnought doing in this Space Marine image?

What's this Dreadnought doing in this Space Marine image? screenshot

Relic Entertainment tossed a little holiday tease up on the official Twitter account for Space Marine today. The above image, which shows a Space Marine going toe-to-toe with a Dreadnought was sent out along with the message that a "big metal surprise" would be coming to the game in January.

For those less versed in the Warhammer 40k universe, Dreadnoughts are the heavily-armed sarcophagi of the greatest warriors produced by the Adeptus Astartes. When the mightiest of Space Marines fall in battle, they are entombed in these huge machines which act both as combat walkers and life-support systems.

But how? Will I be able to pilot a Dreadnought, or will I be fighting against them? Is it a new mode? I must have the answers! Curse you, Relic!

We have a big metal surprise coming... [Twitter via DualShockers]

Assassin's Creed musical features child murder

Perhaps the one thing we don't see much of during the holidays is good ol' child murder. Thankfully, Random Encounter has got us covered with this toe-tapping Assassin's Creed song and dance! I can honestly say that Christmas is now complete.

Look at the US Army's Dismounted Soldier Training System

Look at the US Army's Dismounted Soldier Training System screenshot

Did you know that the United States Army is turning to RealTime Immersive Inc. and CryEngine 3 for its training needs? The figure being thrown around for this project is $57 million, which sounds all too believable.

Two trailers for the Dismounted Soldier Training System have come out this month, the first of which shows the impressive visual fidelity through real-time sequences. The second trailer, viewable below, focuses more on the technology of CryEngine 3.

Visually, it looks the part, but I have to wonder how player death is handled. In many ways, this simulator looks like our industry's most popular games. One would suspect there's less of an emphasis on being a one-man army capable of walking off bullet wounds, however.

Mighty Switch Force! Exclusive Patricia art, free OST

Mighty Switch Force! Exclusive Patricia art, free OST screenshot

We told you yesterday that you should check out WayForward's new eShop 3DS title Mighty Switch Force! And that wasn't the first time we told you how great this game is. It's platforming and puzzles, with delicious artwork, topped with a killer musical score. And it's only $6. C'mon, man!

As a treat to those that listened (and those that didn't) we have exclusive art from WayForward of what main character and cyborg cop Patricia would look like through "hard core" goggles, created by guest artist Genzoman. Pretty great, wouldn't you say? You can check out the full version after the jump.

The game's soundtrack is also pretty great. Jake 'virt' Kaufman did not hold back, and that's probably why the FREE OST was ranked at #2 this morning out of all the content on Bandcamp. Again, the 23 tracks are offered up with a 'pay your own price' option. They're free if you want them to be, but totally worth whatever you can dish out. Go get it!

This All Zombies Must Die! promo arm freaked me out

This All Zombies Must Die! promo arm freaked me out screenshot

This thing scared the sh*t out of me! I get shipments from FedEx and UPS just about every day for Destructoid, so I don't usually think much about them. I'll usually put them down on my desk and rip them open when I get a few free minutes. I wasn't paying much attention when this one surprised me.

I just opened one to find the business end of this thing (pictured above). Imagine the bloody bone stumps being the first thing you see when you open a box. I almost threw the box down! I calmed down when I realized it was not something bloody, but was then grossed out again when I grabbed it, as it's soft and fleshy.

This arm was sent to me to promote All Zombies Must Die!, which hits XBLA and PSN sometime next week. We'll tell you what we think of AZMD! soon.

'Gun-like' Avatar items to be banned from Xbox Live soon

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 06:45 AM PST

'Gun-like' Avatar items to be banned from Xbox Live soon screenshot

Epic Games has declared that the Hammerburst and Lancer Avatar props are going to be removed on January 1, 2012, as part of a new anti-gun policy. Microsoft will be barring any Avatar proper that resembles a firearm. Gotta protect those kids while they're playing Halo and Gears!

If you bought these items already, you will be able to keep them, but there will be no more "gun-like" items on sale in the Avatar Marketplace.

Microsoft has a strange list of things that Avatars cannot have or do, pretending there's some iconic image to uphold like Mickey Mouse. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not realize that Avatars aren't childhood heroes on par with Disney characters. They're pointless little monstrosities, and having guns was about the only interesting thing going for them.

Hmm: Vita memory cards are cheaper than expected

Hmm: Vita memory cards are cheaper than expected screenshot

Lots of noise was made about the price of the PlayStation Vita memory cards. I didn't love the reaction, and that was mostly because it was based on a retailer's early listings. Of course, that's all we had at the time to go on.

Now that we've got the official launch details from Sony, we can see that the MSRP on the Vita memory cards won't burn as much. They're not exactly cheap, but they're not criminally overpriced either. A 4GB memory card has a MSRP of only $19.99. That's quite a bit better than the $29.99 that we first heard.

In case you missed the official word from Sony, here are the card prices:

  • 4GB - $19.99
  • 8GB - $29.99
  • 16GB - $59.99
  • 32GB - $99.99

Yes, I know that SD cards are cheaper. But these prices aren't as bad as we first feared, and I'm sure you'll see some SanDisk third-party offerings later on that are closer to what you'd feel comfortable paying for memory.

Here's the other thing: Videogames cost money. C'mon, you know that.

A rift appears in Trion Worlds' account database

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 05:30 AM PST

A rift appears in Trion Worlds' account database screenshot

The year isn't quite over yet, so there's always room for another hacking fiasco. This time, the victim is Trion Worlds, maker of Rift, and its customers. According to the developer, there was an unauthorized intrusion and the villains gained access to the account database. The information held in the database is plentiful, including customer names, addresses, encrypted passwords, dates of birth, and the first and last four digits and expiration dates of credit cards.

Trion Worlds is emphasizing that there is no evidence that full credit card information was obtained. Customers are being made to change their passwords and update their accounts on the developer's site. Upon doing so, they will receive three days of free game time and a free item -- the Moneybags Purse -- which will increase looted coin by 10 percent.

Players should have received an email with instructions and recommendations; there's also an FAQ available detailing what happened and how it affects customers. All in all, it's a crappy situation, but the game's servers are still up and Trion Worlds appears to be working hard to make amends.

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy is just $2.49 on Steam

E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy is just $2.49 on Steam screenshot

Regular readers will know that I have a deep and grotty love for E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, easily one of the most ridiculous and weird shooters ever made. The beautifully bizarre game is now only $2.49 on Steam, reduced by 75% for today only!

I thought the game was worth picking up at its launch price, so to get it for less than three bucks is an absolute steal. Even if you find it too strange for your tastes, the experience is still worth that pittance of an entry fee. Go get it done!

Zynga does NOT top Facebook's list of top ten games

Zynga does NOT top Facebook's list of top ten games screenshot

With all this talk about Zynga and their bazillions of dollars, you'd expect Facebook's list of top games in 2011 to be dominated by their titles. While half the titles on the list are Zynga games, the two most popular aren't.

I have no idea what Gardens of Time is, but I know it's made by Playdom, and that it's the most popular game on Facebook for 2011. EA takes second place with The Sims Social. Cityville is popular, but it's under these two at #3.

You just got faced on Facebook games, Zynga. Face! Zing! Zynga!

Sorry, never mind.

I'm surprised that the crack-like Zuma Blitz isn't in the rankings. Keep me away from that game. I can't stop when I start.

You can find the full list of Facebook games after the jump. Do any of you play any of these?

Most popular games in 2011

  2. The Sims Social (By EA)
  3. Cityville  (By Zynga)
  4. DoubleDown Casino (by DoubleDown Interactive)

Teaser website points to a new .hack game

Teaser website points to a new .hack game screenshot

Did you forget about .hack? I did too. I think in the western half of the world did. But it's probably coming back. There's a new teaser page up at CyberConnect2 and it says ".hack GAME PROJECT coming soon." It doesn't get more direct that that, folks.

The timing is right, as a .hack movie is coming to Japan next month. Details on the game will be released closer to the movie's release.

For now, there are no other details on platform or date available. The latest issue of Famitsu did show some screenshots, and they show a "high level of detail," says Andriasang.

The official Legend of Zelda timeline revealed

Posted: 23 Dec 2011 02:00 AM PST

The official Legend of Zelda timeline revealed screenshot

A few days ago, we told you that an official Zelda art book containing the definitive timeline for the series would be released. Well, with the book out in Japan, that timeline has been officially revealed. All the historic events and videogames have been reconciled, with various splits into alternative universes. It's pretty crazy.

The existence of an official "timeline" has been a source of frantic debate among gamers. Some have claimed no such thing exists, and even among those that do, there has always been arguments over the sequence of events. No matter what happens, nobody can ever seem to agree.

One would think that this timeline will put an end to one of the oddest gamer controversies around, but something tells me that many still won't be satisfied.

In any case, you can view the chart (as seen on Zelda Universe) below. Don't read if you never want to know, obviously!
