| Christmas lights synched to Mother 3 credits music Posted: 22 Dec 2011 02:30 PM PST Time for some more holiday cheer! Check out this lighting display that has been set in time with the beautiful "16 Melodies" from the Mother 3 soundtrack. AwesomeHouseLights has been taking requests for songs to get the lighting treatment for quite some time, and every now and then, a videogame tune pops up. Why, just last year, the Metal Gear Solid 2 theme was given some love! 16 Melodies with Christmas Lights [YouTube] |
| Action! Pose! Donald! Kingdom Hearts II figures are nice Posted: 22 Dec 2011 01:30 PM PST Know what would go well with that new Dream Drop Distance trailer? A side order of Kingdom Hearts collector's statues, that's what! As part of its Disney Characters Formation Arts Kingdom Hearts II set, Square Enix is releasing these five figurines for you to gawk at. You've got Sora, Roxas, Axel, a Nobody, and Sora in his super adorable Lion King world form! All are rendered in an appropriately Xtreme (tm) action pose. Might look nice up on your shelf, wouldn't they? These babies are going to be sold in a set of six for 6000 yen (about $77). Why six when there are supposedly only five in the complete set? Square Enix is cuh-razay like that. Kingdom Hearts form more art figures from Square-Enix [Tomopop] |
| Capcom to open a bar in Tokyo next month Posted: 22 Dec 2011 12:30 PM PST You could go to a regular bar to drink, or you could go to a bar owned by one of the world's best game makers. Lemme think. Okay, I've decided which one I'd pick. Capcom and Japanese karaoke bar chain Pasela have partnered up to open the fabulously named Capcom bar next month in Shinjuku. This is to be an entertainment bar, set with game demo kiosks and Capcom goods. Andriasang reports that the food and drink will be themed around Capcom games. Capcom Bar won't just be drunken nerds, as Capcom will also use the location to host talk events with game makers. They'll also use it as a filming location for its "Hagitoko!" live web broadcast. This bar will open on January 25 in Shinjuku's Pasela Resort. I'm so there. |
| A very TF2 Christmas with Rudolph the Red Team Pyro Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:30 AM PST Thomas Truong whipped up this sweet little Christmas-themed video that parodies "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" with Team Fortress 2 characters. It's an old-fashioned, feel-good musical number to get you into the holiday spirit. Only three days left, guys and gals! Rudolph the Red Team Pyro [Truongasm] |
| 3DS to pass 4 million sold mark by year's end Posted: 22 Dec 2011 11:00 AM PST The latest Enterbrain data from Japan points to Nintendo passing the 4 million sold mark for the 3DS by year's end. Sales picked up after the price drop earlier this year, but they're really moving now with the release of Monster Hunter 3G. About 300,000 3DS systems are sold each week now that Capcom's money maker is on the market. Last week's numbers broke all records for the system. Nikkei says that we're sitting at 3.6 million right now. There's two weeks left to hit that mark. Nintendo has had a rough year, so it's nice to hear that this is working out for them. |

| Posted: 22 Dec 2011 10:15 AM PST Did I get that name right? What better way than to show off the small size of the PlayStation Vita boxes than with a small breed of dog. I asked him to give me the best "Corgis of Hell" look, but this is the best he could manage. Oh, and this is probably the first US box art we've seen. I doubt this is final art, though. Army Corps of Hell will be a launch game for the Vita, so expect it on February 22. It's a fine game, so you should put it on your pre-order list. More on that in the new year. |
| OnLive brings console gaming to Xperia Play with update Posted: 22 Dec 2011 10:00 AM PST That little "PlayStation Phone" will soon be able to do a lot more than boot up old PlayStation games. OnLive announces today that the slide-out controls of the Xperia Play are now supported in their Android app. This means that you'll have access to the phone's dedicated joysticks and buttons in OnLive streamed AAA console games. "From the moment we launched our OnLive Android app, gamers began asking about Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY game control support," said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO. "We listened and delivered. Now Xperia PLAY gamers in the US and UK can play almost all of OnLive’s 200 premium titles—including hit AAA games like Saints Row: The Third and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations—on their Xperia PLAY smartphone with a full console-class experience, including multiplayer and social features." The app should now be updated, so if you have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, try it out and tell us what you think. |
| Activision and EA may be headed to a courtroom in May Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:47 AM PST Remember that little disagreement Activision and Electronic Arts had over the transition of former Infinity Ward honchos Jason West and Vince Zampella and potential contract-interference? Activision claimed that Electronic Arts contributed to the insubordinate conduct which ended with West and Zampella breaching their contracts. Electronic Arts said otherwise. And we watched in fascination as they publicly beat on each other because those are the kind of jackals we are. It seems that at least one judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court thinks Activision has a case here. In court yesterday, motions for summary dismissal of the case from Electronic Arts, Zampella and West were denied. There is currently a trial date set for May 7th, 2012 where a jury will hear the arguments. California Superior Court Finds ... [Yahoo!] |

| All Zombies Must Die! next week on PSN, XBLA Posted: 22 Dec 2011 09:00 AM PST All Zombies Must Die!, the new co-op zombie shooter from doublesix, hasn't been getting enough attention. It will release this year, after all, but just barely: look for it on PlayStation Network starting December 27 (January 4 in Europe) and on Xbox Live Arcade December 28. Undead fatigue is at an all-time high, so I can see why this game might not immediately seem noteworthy. The zombie slaying is solid enough, and if you are one to get pulled in by XP pop-ups, you'll soon find yourself wanting to play one more quest. And then another. Oh, who needs sleep. Also, there's crafting -- we all know how that ends. |
| 25 Days: Win Final Fantasy VII, VIII and IX on PSN! Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:45 AM PST Not only is it the 25 Days of Giving on Destructoid, but it's also the Winter of RPGs for Square Enix! | Space Marine, Limbo, and more are on sale at Steam Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:30 AM PST The Steam Holiday Sale is still going strong, and looking at my friends' activity, it's working -- they're getting us to play games we've only barely bothered to touch. A few of the daily deals today are worth pointing out:
How has the Great Gift Pile been treating you? At this rate, I'll have to give all of my gifts away; Steam keeps giving me things I own already or have no interest in. Bonus deal: Deus Ex: Human Revolution and its DLC are super cheap on Gamersgate (Thanks, ivr56) and can be activated on Steam, if you so wish. |
| The Second Annual Destructoid Christmas Album Posted: 22 Dec 2011 08:00 AM PST When we put together the Destructoid Christmas Album last year, we never could have predicted how it would turn out. We created it because we thought it would be an amazingly fun thing to do -- the Destructoid editors singing Christmas songs! -- but we had no idea the thing would end up being filled with all kinds of awesome holiday spirit. I mean, there was just so much goddamn holiday spirit, I think we even brought a snowman to life after recording it. With so much of that holiday spirit left over from last year, we thought we would do it again! So, just in time for the holidays, we present to you The Second Annual Destructoid Christmas Album. This one is bigger, badder, and merrier than ever before! Click here to listen. The track list is below. HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE! We love you all more than words. 0:00 - "What's This?" - Chad Concelmo You can also listen here [link coming soon] and even download individual tracks. Fancy! |
| Mega64 made the perfect Skyrim movie Posted: 22 Dec 2011 07:30 AM PST When tasked with making a fan film of the Game of the Forever, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the boys of Mega64 decided to steer away from their typical modus operandi. The result is not a parody but a serious production filled with love and attention to detail. I can honestly say that they captured the spirit of Skyrim absolutely perfectly. Too perfectly, perhaps. | Nathan Foults hates new Xbox dash, makes game about it Posted: 22 Dec 2011 07:00 AM PST
Do you hate the new Xbox 360 dash? I don't, but the ads kind of suck. Know that you can opt out of them. Serious bitching has taken place since the update, but I won't join in, as the 'play disc' and game list options are easily found. That's all I need. Indie developer Nathan Foults of Mommy’s Best Games dislikes the new dash. Maybe 'hate' is too strong a word. I know he does dislike how the system's indie games channel seems to have been pushed off to the side. You have to dig a bit to find the titles, and that's what inspired Foults to create his latest, Game Type. Game Type is named after the name of the dashboard section that you'll have to select to find indie games. The game starts off with the player having to find their way through a faux dash, complete with mock ads. When the game is found and started, you'll be dropped into a hilarious shmup where these ads have come to life. I love that you're controlling "hoodie girl," a character inspired by the horrible stock photo that Microsoft assigned to the Game Type section box. Hoodie Girl has to fight MediaBall. Amazing. There's some decent gaming for your 80 Microsoft Points here. The title supports 2-player co-op and online high scores. You'll just have to dig for it in the dash. PARKOUR! |
| Tetris manager: Angry Birds is just a fad Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:30 AM PST No sh*t, Tetris guy. You knew that the silly physics flinger was on the way out when you started seeing too much branded merchandise at the checkout stand at the grocery store. I saw a senior citizen with an Angry Birds shirt on the other day. When I saw that I did that Jackie Chan hands-open-at-sides-of-head thing, and then walked it off, reminding myself that this is something that won't last. Angry Birds will never become a timeless game like Tetris has. Still, Tetris dude, Henk Rogers, manager of The Tetris Company, is kind of a dick* about it. "Again I like to compare it to a sport, in the beginning it's an activity, like golf was an activity, then it became a sport. I think once people have played it more than 20 or 25 years you can say it's here to stay, it's a sport, it's no longer a fad, Rogers told Industry Gamers in an interview. "Angry Birds is cute and everybody plays it for a while but they get burned out and move on and they will play another game." Our game is older and better, he says: "But Tetris is like Happy Birthday, it keeps on going. Everybody else has games that come and go, they make the hit parade, but these are all temporary. You have to work really hard to get your unknown game to be #1, but when we re-released Tetris it became #1 even though we didn't do any marketing. We have an unfair advantage, I gotta say. I'd rather have the goose that lays the golden egg." Jealous, bro? * - I can be a dick about it. He can't. |
| GameStop is calling to say The Last Guardian is canceled Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:16 AM PST [Update 3: Sony told us the exact same thing, saying that "the game is still in development."] [Update 2: Sony is saying that The Last Guardian is NOT canceled. Senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, shuts this down on Kotaku: "This is not true."] [Update: Even more readers are contacting us to inform us of this message from GameStop. Reader Darren Hupke has a recording of this call.] Canceled? We feared the worst when we heard that Team Ico was breaking up and going other places, but we were assured that work would continue on their next PS3 title, The Last Guardian. Canceled? I hope not. This is far from confirmation, and we've reached out to Sony for comment, but we're already hearing from Destructoid readers that are getting calls from GameStop saying that The Last Guardian has been canceled. We've called a few GameStop stores and have heard the same. "Canceled by vendor" is what we're hearing. Search the Gamestop site and you'll get "0 results" for the game's title. No! Say it's not so! Stay tuned. We'll pass the official along word as soon as we get it. |
| Warriors Orochi 3 intro video revels in archetypes Posted: 22 Dec 2011 06:00 AM PST
Here's the introduction video for the upcoming Warriors Orochi 3 (branded Musou Orochi 2 in Japan). It's crammed full of characters from Tecmo Koei games, although it does seem to highlight just how badly the Warriors games rely on archetypes. The characters have all been grouped together depending on what stereotypical roles they fill, so you've got a shot of the "noble warrior heroes" all fighting together, a shot of the "big heavy idiots" stomping around, and a shot of the "females with no personality" holding hands and skipping over a fireball. Anyone who plays these games knows just how one-dimensional the characters are, but this video -- epic as it is -- certainly hammers the point home. |
