| Lord of the Rings: War in the North demo OnLive exclusive Posted: 02 Nov 2011 04:30 PM PDT The Lord of the Rings: War in the North may be the Tolkien experience gamers have been waiting for, but if you're not quite sold don't expect to find a demo in the usual spots. OnLive currently has an exclusive on a 30 minute trial version of the game. So, if you have a desire to bludgeon a few orcs into a sanguine pulp before you decide if this one is worth a purchase or not, you'll have to grit your teeth and play via the almighty cloud. War in the North hit North American shelves yesterday and will be out in Europe by this time next week. While the game will be available on the mainland on November 9th, unfortunately, UK audiences will have to wait until the 25th to get their hands on the copy. Until then you'll just have to enjoy the demo I suppose. |
| Quality concerns mean Machinarium won't hit WiiWare Posted: 02 Nov 2011 04:00 PM PDT Despite being nearly completed, the WiiWare version of indie adventure title Machinarium will not see a release. Amanita Design founder Jakub Dvorský tells GameSetWatch they "decided not to release it because it's just not good." "The resolution is crap, and we had to squeeze the whole game (which is around 360 MB in [the] original version) into [the] 40 MB WiiWare limit. The music sounds terrible, the background pictures are heavily compressed, and we had to throw out ... some animations." Dropping the project this late? That's some dedication to quality. There is, however, next year's PlayStation 3 port of Machinarium, which Dvorský believes to be the "ultimate version." Amanita Shelves Machinarium's Nearly Complete Wii Port [GameSetWatch] |
| Zelda rap video features a gangsta Great Deku Tree Posted: 02 Nov 2011 03:30 PM PDT What!? RAP!? Yes, rap. I like rap, so expect lots more rap from me in the future. YouTuber HIimRAWN has a history of making hardcore hip hop music videos based on videogames. His latest joint, "I'm Questing," takes Ocarina of Time and contemporizes it -- costumes have a more modern flair and Epona is now a motorcycle. Of course, it's ultimately about the music, and these cats have quite an impressive flow. Though the song is mostly played straight, there's still the odd bit of humor sprinkled here and there. It's hilarious to see the Great Deku Tree spittin' like Busta Rhymes, although I probably could've done without the Ke$ha-sounding Navi with the Lady Gaga fashion sense. LEGEND OF ZELDA RAP!!! | The DTOID Show: GTA V, DMC, & Sublime Zombie Singalongs Posted: 02 Nov 2011 03:15 PM PDT [The Destructoid Show gives a rundown of all the top news from Destructoid.com every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Subscribe to us on YouTube, follow us on Twitter, and like us on Facebook.] Hey gang, we've got another episode of The Destructoid Show. But only because it's Wednesday. If it was a Saturday, I'd be doing other stuff. So uh. Yeah. The big news today is the long-awaited (for about a week or so) trailer of Grand Theft Auto V. And there's also a new trailer for DMC, the fifth Devil May Cry game. Speaking of DMC, Run-DMC has a song in the Saints Row The Third soundtrack, along with other musicians. Furthermore, the PC version of the game isn't just a console port. And finally, because it can't all be good news, Capcom's charging fifty bucks for Resident Evil Revelations because it comes with extra gigabytes or something. Most importantly, go check out the Humble Voxatron Bundle. It's independent gaming that's name-your-own-price and it supports charity. You're basically a jerk if you don't check it out. Don't forget to enter our contest! Pre-ordering Modern Warfare 3 at GameStop stores will get you a code that let's you enter a ton of different contests, such as a VIP trip to Comic-Con 2012, 100,000 MS Points, a skydiving trip, a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, a trip around the world, a Zero-G experience, $10,000 in cash to much more. All the details on the giveaways are over on GameStop. GameStop has given us a 250GB Xbox 360 with a copy of Modern Warfare 3 to give out to one of you! Simply write a limerick about why you want to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and send your submission to show@destructoid.com. We'll be picking a winner after the contest closes on November 7 at 11:59PM CDT. Contest is open to anyone with a US based address the prize can be shipped to. Good luck! |
| Praise the sun for this new Dark Souls patch Posted: 02 Nov 2011 03:00 PM PDT Many of us were pleasantly surprised to hear that 1.5 million copies of Dark Souls have been shipped worldwide. "Praise the sun," indeed. Following this bit of cheerfulness, there's patch 1.04 -- it's coming with some greatly appreciated tweaks (via NeoGAF). Getting rid of delayed attack animations, adjusting lock-ons, adding more to shop inventories, and allowing you to keep Cracked Red Eye Orbs if invading fails are just some of what this patch does. It also sounds as if we might actually be able to see how many souls are required to level up, which would be lovely. The patch seems to be live for Japanese players but I haven't had the opportunity to see if it's available in North America on Xbox 360 since Xbox Live isn't working for me all of a sudden. Anyone care to comment? Patch 1.04

| Dungeon Defenders celebrates sales milestone with events Posted: 02 Nov 2011 02:30 PM PDT Well would you look at this, Trendy Entertainment's recently released hybrid between RPG and tower defence Dungeon Defenders has now surpassed 250,000 sales. 200,000 of those sales came from the PC alone, with those other 50,000 split between Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network. To celebrate this, Trendy are to begin holding a slew of community events for the -- currently -- 50,000 of you out there playing the console version. Don't worry, the developers haven't simply provided us with a long, boring list for you to read. No, they've given us awesome-looking wallpapers that have the events listed on the side. They're awesome, and you need to check them out. Oh, and don't worry PC players, this is just "one of [Trendy's] many plans to support the game across all platforms" so they have something in store for you. They're just not telling us yet. |
| Rocket Slime 3 takes cute adventure to the high seas Posted: 02 Nov 2011 02:00 PM PDT
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 3 might have one of the cutest trailers I have ever seen. The series, which features a slime from the Dragon Quest games as protagonist, is filled with adorable and has the Rocket Slime fighting off enemies and going on adventures. The trailer is in Japanese, but you don't need to understand the language to appreciate how cute this looks. Dragon Quest is a great series (even if I think of DBZ every time I play it), and I enjoyed the last Rocket Slime game I played, but there has, as of yet, been no American or European release date announced. Rocket Slime 3 will be hitting Japanese stores November 2. |
| Valkyria Chronicles, Virtua Fighter modules in Miku game Posted: 02 Nov 2011 01:30 PM PDT Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Extend is a Sega game, so I get how it's possible that Valkyria Chronicles and Virtua Fighter likenesses could be in the game. It feels kind of dirty to see this tie-in, but if you're a fellow Sega whore you won't be too bothered. Besides, they're cute. Siliconera says that among the modules Sega has shown off recently are ones from Valkyria Chronicles and Virtua Fighter. Though I'll probably never play the game, I like the Kage-Maru one. These join others from Phantasy Star 2 Portable: Infinity and Shining Hearts. For Project Diva fans, this is a nice bit to look forward to. To Valkyria Chronicles fans this is a painful reminder that we're not playing the third game. |
| HeroClix Online: Tiny heroes and villains will do battle Posted: 02 Nov 2011 01:00 PM PDT
HeroClix Online is bringing the Marvel tabletop game to our wonderful digital realm. The focus is on action as players recreate classic Marvel battles or play out their own, "what ifs." Players of the tabletop game should be pleased to hear that the online version keeps the original game's features and if you could do something with the physical version you can recreate it in this one. Despite being intrigued, I've never really gotten into tabletop gaming. But I do love me some superhero fights, so this might suit me rather well. As long as I can beat up Cyclops, I'll be a happy chap. The game features:

| Need for Speed: The Run gets a multiplayer trailer Posted: 02 Nov 2011 12:30 PM PDT
Much like sports games, I prefer my racers to be as arcade-y as possible. Real life is boring enough already. Why try to simulate that when you can hit a dozen home runs in a row, pull off an end zone to end zone Hail Mary pass, or even play chicken with a tractor on a Nebraskan country road? Naturally, I've always really dug the Need for Speed series. And with the franchise's most recent title is due out in a little under two weeks EA has dropped a trailer featuring the game's multiplayer -- which looks like a ridiculous good time. I only wish my cross-country trips were so eventful. Driving across Texas gets old fast. In any case, Need for Speed: The Run will be racing to stores on November 15th. |
| Ubisoft buys Trials HD developer RedLynx Posted: 02 Nov 2011 12:00 PM PDT Nice play, Ubisoft. They've snapped up Finland-based dev RedLynx, the makers of the fine game Trials HD. That game became one of the best-selling XBLA titles ever, mind you. Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer at Ubisoft, sounded pretty pleased about their latest acquisition: "We are delighted to welcome RedLynx to the Ubisoft family. Their expertise in asynchronous online games and physics-based game mechanics provides us with a great opportunity to bring their powerful brands, most notably Trials, to an even broader range of fast-growing digital platforms." That means more Trials for us. Not a bad thing. Of course, RedLynx also wins, as they'll be able to share their games with an even bigger audience. This acquisition follows four others in in the past few of years. It started in 2008 with Massive Entertainment, continued in 2009 with Nadeo, as well as with Quazal and Owlient in the last year or so. Look at you, Ubisoft. |
| Three Silent Hill games coming winter 2012 Posted: 02 Nov 2011 11:45 AM PDT Konami has laid out their Silent Hill line-up for 2012 with a press release today. It's three games in a row for the first three months of next year. First is Silent Hill HD Collections, a visually upgraded pack containing Silent Hill 2 and 3, set to release January 24. There's also new voice acting -- that could be really scary! February brings Silent Hill Book of Memories, for the PS Vita. We have new screenshots for Memories in our gallery below. I'm on the fence with this one. March is the big one: Silent Hill:Downpour. I'm hoping for good things with the last one. We haven't seen enough of it to make a solid call. So, what do you think? Is 2012 the best year ever for Silent Hill fans? Or is it too much too fast? |
| Zumba Fitness 2: Get sweaty in front of your TV Posted: 02 Nov 2011 11:30 AM PDT
Today I have been reminded that some people actually go out of their way to move around, even when playing videogames. If that's your cup of tea, then perhaps Zumba Fitness 2 will be right up your street. Apparently Zumba is dancing and exercising at the same time. Like jazzercise! But unlike jazzercise, zumba is also all about fashion, music and it's a lifestyle. Actually perhaps jazzercize is a bit like that too, honestly it was the only thing that popped into my mind and I probably know less about it than Zumba. If you're equally as ignorant of Zumba as I appear to be, then this video from the creator and instructors from Zumba Fitness 2 may enlighten you or at the very least entertain you with bright colors and chipper people. The video and new screenshots also reveal some of the new dance styles available to players (or would that be dancers?) Since we all know that dancing alone is a little bit sad, Zumba Fitness 2 has a party mode for up to four people, along with Single Song and Full Class, so it's a bit like playing a single mission or doing the whole campaign. |
| DC Universe Online has now gone free-to-play Posted: 02 Nov 2011 11:00 AM PDT After a short delay, Sony Online Entertainment has announced that their superhero MMO, DC Universe Online, has made the transition to a free-to-play model. I played this for about a week after it was released and, like all MMOs, seemed to just run out of time to dedicate to it. It was pretty fun while it lasted, actually, flying through the air in a crimson suit with a tommy gun. I know Fraser Brown has been itching to get back into DC Universe Online to see how the free-to-play shift might help the game along. Anybody else going to give it a shot now that there's no entry fee? |
| Angry Birds franchise hits 500 million downloads Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:30 AM PDT Aren't we tired of this game yet? I see it everywhere. I knew it would be a huge thing early last year when I saw my young niece playing it. Her grandma heard the music and knew what game she was playing. Now, aside from being on every portable device, it's a movie, it's on television, in commercials, in the checkout asile at grocery stores, and even on t-shirts. It's just a physics-based flinger, people -- there's a lot of these out there! Half a billion served is where we stand with Rovio's casual title. It's just like McDonald's hamburgers, and I have no idea why people continue to enjoy either one of them! I mean, get this: 300 million minutes of Angry Birds are played daily. A post on Gamasutra gives more crazy statistics:
Mind. Blown. |
| Nano Assault: Infections are sexy now Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:00 AM PDT If I had known that fighting viruses was as fun and gorgeous as Nano Assault makes it seem, I'd almost certainly have studied medicine at university instead of drinking. Thankfully, you don't need a medical degree and a massive amount of debt to play this upcoming Innerspace inspired shmup for the 3DS. Nano Assault will be kicking infections' asses (they have asses, right?) from November 22 and will set you back $29.99, now I'm not American, so forgive my ignorance, but I'll assume that's less than health insurance. |
| inFamous 2 PlayStation Move support is now available Posted: 02 Nov 2011 09:30 AM PDT
Sony HQ sends word that PS Move support is now available for inFamous 2. A totally free update lets you add Move support to both the main storyline as well as the user-generated content offerings. In the video above you'll see Sucker Punch's Nate Fox demonstrating how you can use Move to play the game in a new way. It takes a couple of minutes before you see the Move in use, but it looks pretty slick. Anyone had a chance to try this out yet? |
| New Max Payne screenshots full of action-packed action Posted: 02 Nov 2011 09:00 AM PDT While everybody was busy pointing their gaze on the Grand Theft Auto V announcement trailer, Rockstar quietly dropped a few new screenshots on the Max Payne 3 website. Say what you will about the new look of Max, He scares the hell out of me. I remember the tagline for the original Max Payne, "Do not cross a man with nothing to lose." But the cover had this good looking guy with a nice jacket and a gun. Dude had things to lose. Now that we have bald, round and ugly over here it feels much more appropriate. |
