[TGC 2011] ArcheAge, Blade & Soul set for 2012

Posted: 19 Nov 2011 04:11 AM PST

Let me get one thing clear first, there isn’t any surprise announcement over at Tencent Games Carnival for either ArcheAge or Blade Soul except both games will enter beta in 2012. Yes, bummer. But a couple of trailers were shown for both titles, first up is a traditional sand art demonstration. I am guessing this is Mr Jake Song’s very own story. And yes, I spent time putting captions in it.

The second trailer is too long for me (it is Saturday and I am busy playing BATTERY), hence I will explain only a little in the trailer. For the rest of the trailer, you can see castle building, town building, naval combat and more.

You can read more about each race’s description here (link), but of course, teased in the trailer, many more races will be added in due time.

There is nothing much about Blade Soul, except the official Chinese name and logo being revealed. Closed Beta 3 is due to start early next year in Korea, while the game will enter commercial phase next year as well.

There is also an interview trailer with the game’s Art Director on how he gets inspiration for his artwork and the processes to go through to make them come alive in the game. Main point, his female character designs are more awesome as he is a male, and he said if he is a female, the male artwork would be better. And of course, how he pays attention to every single detail on the character’s clothing.

Torchlight II Needs More Time, Won’t be Out This Year

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 10:08 AM PST

Torchlight II

Runic Games had been hoping to get Torchlight II out by the end of the year. President Travis Baldree now says the company “made a good run at that” at that goal, but it simply isn’t realistic. Rather than release an inferior product, it will instead take the extra time to ensure the game is as good as it can be.

“We’ve come to the realization, however, that getting a game of this scope up to the quality and polish level we want to achieve is going to take a little longer,” he wrote on the game’s official website today, “especially since we want to run a small beta before release to ensure that our launch is smooth.”

Whereas the original Torchlight wasn’t as polished as it could have been, Baldree points out Runic has the resources to do better this time around. (It likely has the success of the first game — which sold one million units — to thank for that.)

“Right at this moment though, we do have those resources for the sequel,” he said, “and we feel strongly that we should apply them to make this the best game we can make and hopefully one that you’ll enjoy and continue to want to play in the future.”

Baldree claimed the current development cycle on Torchlight II has taken 18 months. He expects the time still needed to finish the rest “is relatively small.”

Like its predecessor, Torchlight II will only cost $19.99, with the big addition being online multiplayer. It also introduces a new class, the Embermage, which is a spellcaster that can use fire, ice, and electricity. It’s scheduled for release on both PC and Mac — it’s possible that an Xbox Live Arcade version will not happen because the Xbox 360 doesn’t have enough memory to run the game as-is.

Blade & Soul (KR)

Posted: 18 Nov 2011 10:08 AM PST

It is not something uncommon in Korea and Japan for online games to endorse hardware products, but I thought I would post something about this since Blade Soul is involved. The latest Samsung Series 7 laptop is chosen as NCsoft’s preferred gaming laptop for its upcoming blockbuster MMORPG, Blade Soul.

You can read more about the specs here (link), but the storage in the Korean version is 1TB HDD instead of SSD and it will not come with exclusive Blade Soul stuff pre-loaded into the system. If you have not read, Blade Soul will be holding Closed Beta 3 early next year before Open Beta arrives. And no, you can’t have the female model, but you can have the guy in the commercial below.
