| Battlefield 3 Tops Batman: Arkham City in October NPDs Posted: 13 Nov 2011 09:34 AM PST It may not have been able to top Call of Duty: Black Ops when it comes to being the most popular game played on Xbox Live, but Battlefield 3 was — at least for a month — able to take the top spot on the NPD sales charts for October. Battlefield 3 came in at “just under” 2 million units across all platforms in the United States. That’s not a terrible figure for a game released at a time where it had only five days to track in the month, but compared with today’s news of rival Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 selling 6.5 million units in the U.S. and U.K. in a day, it doesn’t sound quite so good. (Here’s a preview of next month’s NPDs: Call of Duty is number one.) It’s important to note the numbers for Battlefield (or any other game) don’t account for digital sales, of which there were likely many thanks to online-only deals and the perks being offered through Origin. DICE’s new shooter was followed by Batman: Arkham City with over 1.5 million units sold at retail between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. (It won’t be out on PC until later this month.) NBA 2K12 was the number three title despite the ongoing NBA lockout, and Rage was just behind that. Just Dance 3 (available only on Wii and 360 until the PS3 version comes out in December) was a strong seller and Dark Souls fans will be happy to see the niche title make it in at number six. Also of note was Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure — it failed to make the top ten, instead making it to number 11 in new physical sales for the month. Unlike the trend we’ve been seeing for months, almost all comparisons with last year were up — new videogame hardware sales were up to $295.6 million from $279.9 million last October, combined console and portable software sales were up to $621.3 million from $604.8 million, and overall software sales (including PC) were up to $649.5 million from $643.9 million. The only area that was down was accessories from $142.4 million to $135.9 million. “Accessory sales declined versus last October, but more so in dollars than in units due to a decline in average selling price,” wrote NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “The accessory types that declined the most were Gamepads and Specialty Controllers.” As for the hardware side, Nintendo already shared its figures earlier today. Wii sold nearly 250,000 units during the month and the DS line did almost 180,000. 3DS sold over 250,000, enough to make it the second best-selling system during the month. That number brings its life-to-date sales in the United States up to 1.65 million units. At this rate, it will exceed first-year sales of the original DS in the U.S. by the time it reaches its one-year anniversary. Xbox 360 was again the best-selling system during October; hardware sales were up 21 percent over last October. 393,000 units were sold, representing a 44 percent share of current-gen console sales during the month. Sony has yet to issue a statement on today’s numbers, although based on the 44 percent figure cited by Microsoft and the known sales of the 360 and Wii, PS3 sold in the neighborhood of 250,000 units during the month. Update: Sony’s NPD statement didn’t offer up much; first- and third-party software sales are up five percent, and Infamous: Festival of Blood is the fastest-selling PS3 game ever launched on PSN, according to SCEA’s senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold. The full software top ten list follows below.

| Delve Into Skyrim with Our Rebooted Friday Podcast Posted: 12 Nov 2011 09:34 PM PST Skyrim! In the past week, we’ve reviewed it. We’ve live streamed it. I’ve posted vacation photos of it. And it seems like just about everyone in the 1UP/IGN offices has been playing it. So, to cap it off, I spent an hour in the podcast studio with Thierry Nguyen and Ryan Winterhalter to discuss it in the latest episode of our weekly podcast, Games, Dammit! What’s unusual about this fact is that Skyrim is the only thing we talk about this week on Games, Dammit! That’s not a reflection of our being obsessed with the game, though. Instead, it’s the result of a comprehensive overhaul for the show. In fact, this episode of Games, Dammit! is so different in purpose and focus than those that have come before that we’ve pulled a D.C. Comics by rebooting the show from Episode 1. We’ll be the first to admit that Games, Dammit! has always struggled to find its voice. The shadow of an immense legacy has always hovered over the show; it’s the grandchild of 1UP Yours, the podcast that codified the now-standard games podcast format of four guys sitting in a room arguing about video games. The people who made that show what it was have all long since moved on, but there’s always been this unvoiced expectation that the 1UP Friday podcast should be the same thing, even though 1UP’s current staff has a very different temperament than the 1UP Yours crew. We don’t really argue among ourselves much. We’re not much for sweeping proclamations or wild predictions or steak bets. So why try to uphold a format that thrived on such things? In the end, we don’t think that was doing anyone any favors. So rather than simply keep on keepin’ on out of some sense of obligation or inertia, we’ve rebooted Games, Dammit! to revolve around what 1UP’s present-day staff does well: Focus on specific topics and discuss them in detail. Our site doesn’t attempt to be an all-encompassing gaming news resource; our adoptive sibling IGN does that better. Why should our podcast be any different? In the coming weeks (and months) we’ll refine our approach, but we’re confident this new direction for Games, Dammit is the right one. And of course, it wouldn’t be a 1UP joint if we didn’t give you, the readers and listeners, a voice as well. Drop by the 1UP forums’ Games, Dammit! questions thread to share your comments, questions, and opinions about our next two topics: Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. And hey! Enjoy the show. Posted by: admin in Gaming News Thank you for Visiting Gameforumer.com, Hope you enjoyed the stay with us.
