Latest Gaming and MMORPG Updates

Ragnarok II (KR)

Posted: 04 Nov 2011 03:49 AM PDT

Just when I, along with the rest of the world thought Gravity finally buried Ragnarok II, the company announced today a new beta phase for the title. Delayed for around 2 to 3 years now, the game is starting to show its age in previous beta phases. This did not help when Gravity recently launched Finding Neverland Online (or Eden Eternal) in Korea, attracting the praises of many gamers there as a better product than Ragnarok II.

(Korean website) The Limited Edition Test is open to everyone with a GnJoy (Gravity’s MMO portal) account, starting from 16 November till 20 November for a grand total of 5 days. For the first day, servers will be opened from 2pm till 7pm, while the 2nd part will see the servers on from 17 November at 2pm till 20 November 2pm.

Since this is not a major beta test phase, which you can tell from the limited (lol @ beta phase name) time, majority of the new stuff will be bug fixes, updates to existing features from players’ feedback with a few new maps and dungeons. Will Ragnarok II finally see the light? I am in total doubt as of now.

Ayopa Games Releases its First Two iOS Games

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 09:48 PM PDT

Not long after launching last month, Ayopa Games has already released its first two iOS games today, Chicken Rescue and W.E.L.D.E.R. Like with many games being launched on the App Store, they’re each available at half-price for a limited time.

Chicken Rescue is a fairly simple arcade game where you guide a chicken around a level, collecting flowers and baby chickens that have to be delivered to the end of the level. Having gotten to play it for myself over the last week, I found myself enjoying it the more I played. Initially it seems incredibly simple, even to a fault. Things begin to pick up as you see how you can level up your chicken with the points you get from collecting flowers.

Collecting flowers in rapid succession allows you to earn more coins than slowly picking them up individually. These coins can be cashed in to return to the last checkpoint if you die. Alternatively you can use them to level up things that cause coins to show up more often, provide you with more time to string a flower combo together, etc.

The one fault I could find with the game (aside from the slow pacing of the tutorial early on) was the controls. By default you’ll be playing with tilt controls, which I didn’t find to be the most accurate way to play. I found myself fighting the controls and dying as a result of them far more often than I’d like. You can instead opt to use a virtual joystick, but as is often the case with these, it’s easy for your finger to slide off and cause you to die. Even so, for the current price of $0.99, there is enough fun to be had to make it worth checking out.

The same could also be said for W.E.L.D.E.R. It’s similar to Bookworm except instead of tracing words, you build them yourself. Words are automatically submitted, requiring you to think far ahead when trying to build a big word — you could be setting it up only to lose out by accidentally creating a smaller word.

Like Chicken Rescue, it initially seems too basic for its own good. After playing for a bit, an additional layer of complexity is added in that makes it worth playing past the 15-minute mark. Some tiles can’t be moved, strings of letters can be highlighted and reversed, and a single string of letters can create more than one word (e.g. “idoll” counts as both “idol” and “doll”). As an added bonus for those looking to improve their lexicon, you can easily look up the definition of any words you play, which came in handy for me when the word “dunt” played itself.

It’s not the most innovative word game I’ve ever played, and there’s no shortage of word games on the App Store, but particularly at the current $1.99 price, it’s worth a look.

Grand Theft Auto V Brings Back Multiplayer to Southern California

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 09:38 AM PDT

Following up on the release of the game’s debut trailer yesterday, Rockstar has issued a Grand Theft Auto V press release and provided some scraps of information about the project.

A lot of what was suggested in the trailer has been confirmed — the game is set in a Los Angeles-inspired city that will, like in San Andreas, be called Los Santos. It’s described as a “re-imagined, present-day Southern California” that includes some of L.A.’s surroundings, namely the “surrounding hills, countryside and beaches.”

Not that you’d necessarily expect the feature to be dropped, but GTA V will bring back online multiplayer. Whether it’ll come in the same form as GTA IV‘s it didn’t say; we just know the game will head into a “bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer.”

Each of the last two numbered entries have marked a big shift for the series; III took the game into a third-person 3D world and IV took the series in a more serious direction. Judging purely by the trailer, it didn’t look as if things were changing drastically, but it’ll take more than a single trailer to be able to definitively say things one way or the other. At least for the purposes of today’s press release, Rockstar is suggesting another big change is in store for the franchise.

“Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser. “We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans.”

We’ve gotten no indication of when the game will be out. Another Rockstar release, Max Payne 3, is set to come out in March and publisher Take-Two would likely want to put some room in between the two. In either April or May of the last three years Rockstar has had a big release — GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, and L.A. Noire — and it’s very possible GTA V will fall in line with that pattern once again. There is a theory that a hint about the release date was hidden in the trailer; a for sale sign shows the numbers “2405″ which has been interpreted as a May 24 release date. It seems like a good guess, only that day is a Thursday, not a Tuesday, making it an unlikely release date.

RaiderZ (EU)

Posted: 03 Nov 2011 09:38 AM PDT

(Teaser website) Over the past few years, English speaking territories, other than North America, were lamenting the lack of online games being brought over. These include Southeast Asia and to a larger extent, Europe. Well, one of the hottest action MMORPG is about to set foot in Europe around the same time as the North American server, which is RaiderZ.

Published by Perfect World in North America (link) and Frogster Interactive in Europe as announced earlier this year (link), RaiderZ is developed by the creators of GunZ The Duel, which means players can look forward to polished combo action in the game. While there is somewhat of a Monster Hunter vibe to the game, it is a fact Capcom won’t be expanding out of it comfort zones anytime soon.

Just in case you are wanting to see more trailers, here are the ones for Perfect World Entertainment’s North American version. Can’t wait! (if there is no IP block)
