The DTOID Show: Bethesda acknowledges Squidbear!

Happy Friday, everyone! I'll bet you never get sick of hearing that.

On the first half of today's live Destructoid Show, I summarized Chad's illustrious Uncharted 3 review and made a quick list of the best Halloween game sales this weekend, while Max gave the low-down on Mass Effect 3's new co-op mode. Topping it all off was some wild speculation on features we think the Wii U should consider adopting before its big reveal at next year's E3.

Later on, we show a clip from episode 13 of the official Bethesda podcast in which Skyrim's art director confirms* that the Squidbear will, in fact, be a creature in Skyrim. Sort of. It's complicated. Anyway, if you weren't sick of Skyrim yet, Max also has some Photoshopped concept art he's proud of.

We also announced a contest thanks to GameStop, where per-ordering Modern Warfare 3 will get you a code that let's you enter a ton of different contests, such as a VIP trip to Comic-Con 2012, 100,000 MS Points, a skydiving trip, a 2012 Jeep Wrangler, a trip around the world, a Zero-G experience, $10,000 in cash to much more. All the details on the giveaways are over on GameStop.

GameStop has given us a 250GB Xbox 360 with a copy of Modern Warfare 3 to give out to one of you! Simply write a limerick about why you want to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and send your submission to show@destructoid.com. We'll be picking a winner after the contest closes on November 7 at 11:59PM CDT. Contest is open to anyone with a US based address the prize can be shipped to. Good luck!

Before we head out for weekend festivities, a big congratulations to Joseph Gonzales for winning our War of the Worlds contest with his haunting sketch of Jonathan Holmes as a martian. Because I didn't need to sleep tonight or anything. Nah. It's cool.

Unboxing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector's Edition!

Unboxing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Collector's Edition! screenshot

I have been playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim all day today, but had to briefly tear myself away from all the mammoths and flamethrower-hands to unbox the Collector's Edition, which arrived just soon after my review copy did.

Retailing for a princely $149.99, the Skyrim Collector's Edition contains a copy of the game, an incredibly fancy art book, and a statue of a dragon. It's a definite must-have for hardcore fans of the series, although good luck getting it home on the bus -- the box is huge!

Anyway, this is a thing I did.

BioShock Infinite's voice actors explain themselves

Just how do the voice actors behind Irrational Games' upcoming BioShock Infinite feel about, say, arguing about what to do with a dying virtual horse? Or how does Booker DeWitt's voice actor feel about Elizabeth? All of this and so much more has been answered in part 1 of "The People Behind Booker and Elizabeth."

Not only will this video give you an insight into how the actors feel, but also more information on the characters themselves. There's also gameplay, which is good. I must warn you that animal lovers may "awwwwwwwww" unexpectedly during certain scenes.

Here's a cute trailer for the coming conclusion of the epic LEGO Harry Potter saga, LEGO Harry Potter: Years-5-7. Voldemort is working on being creepy but we all know what he really just wants in life (unlife? re-life?) is to be loved. Perhaps this little boost to his self-image will do the trick.

BioShock mirroring history and Occupy Wall Street

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:00 AM PDT

BioShock mirroring history and Occupy Wall Street screenshot

In BioShock Infinite players are presented with a world, or rather a floating city, in conflict. Both ideological and physical. The conflict is between the dominant right-wing nationalists, the Founders, and a coalition of populist groups who feel disenfranchised, the Vox Populi. On the surface it's not completely dissimilar to what's happening in the US with the rise of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street. Ken Levine spoke with The Washington Post to discuss how real life is reflected in video games.

When we started the game, we had this idea for these movements, and we were looking back at history. Our games are heightened versions of history... In this world, we came up with the idea of looking at what was happening at the time of the game [the 1890's], with the jingoism movement and the nationalist movement versus the internationalist movement. This was before the tea party, before Occupy Wall Street.

I think that because the original BioShock took place after the conflict in Rapture and the game was dealing with more abstract ideas like moral absolutism as well as an ideology that has fallen out of favor, Objectivism, it was more distant and less personal. But BioShock Infinite takes place in the middle of a conflict. One between two recognizable groups that hold a mirror to many groups throughout history. So it's easier to draw comparisons. Of course, the side effect of that is that there are plenty of people in those groups who take it personally.

The games tend to be a Rorschach [test] for people, and I've heard both sides of the reaction [to the demo]. I had the displeasure of going to a while supremacist site that made a point of saying this game by "the Jew" Ken Levine was about killing white people. But then I went to this leftist site that said this is about discrediting leftists movements.

Personally, I'm looking forward to people criticizing and debating the perceived message of BioShock Infinite when it comes out. It will give me an excuse to be a boring git and talk about politics after I've just fought a giant metal bird and opened a portal to another time. Best of both worlds. The full interview is here. Don't worry, it's not all politics and history, videogames do get mentioned.

New execution moves revealed for The Darkness II

New execution moves revealed for The Darkness II screenshot

Did you ever wonder what it would look like if you ripped a human spine from various orifices? No, just me then. Well, join me for a quick jaunt down the twisted and bloody world of The Darkness II with this new trailer.

Now, a little bit older and a little bit wiser, Jackie Estacado can now perform a wider range of execution moves with his Demon Arms, and can also unlock more through out the course of the game. The ridiculous executions moves in The Darkness helped make it stand out amoungst other FPS games at the time, for myself. I loved watching those tendrils fight over which one would get to eat the heart of my fallen enemy. Good times!

Make sure to stick around until the end of the trailer too, to see the fan-favorite "Assecution". The Darkness II will be hitting stores February 7 2012.

Battlefield 3's 'Strike at Karkand' has seen better days

A batch of new screenshots taken from the Back to Karkand expansion for Battlefield 3 has been sent out by Electronic Arts and DICE. The destruction on display today is from "Strike at Karkand," one of the four resurfacing Battlefield 2 maps.

Can't say I have as much of a personal attachment to this as, say, Wake Island, but the injection of visual stimulation into my eyeballs is appreciated nonetheless.

'More crazy than Limbo,' Playdead speaks on 'project two'

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 09:00 AM PDT

'More crazy than Limbo,' Playdead speaks on 'project two' screenshot

Playdead's premiere title Limbo was one of a world engulfed in darkness and monochrome obscurity, where behind each corner almost certain death would be waiting for the protagonist. Along with its tight controls and striking art style, Playdead made Limbo into one of the most highlighted downloadable games of 2010. It looks like the studio is going to try and outdo the strangeness of Limbo with its next game, known only as "project two."

Playdead founder Dino Patti spoke up to Eurogamer about the current title in development and has declared that it will be "more crazy than Limbo, if you say that's crazy. It's more weird in many ways."

During the Nottingham GameCity6 festival, Patti shared that the game will include a color palette larger than that of a 2B pencil, that it'll be running on the Unity engine, and that Playdead will be striving for a simultaneous multiplatform release.

"We are aiming to go as wide as possible. At this point it's hard to promise, because I don't know what consoles there will be or what deals. It went really well on XBLA. I'm really happy with those guys. But it also went really well on PlayStation."

As for any other details, Patti has refused to reveal anything more about the game until a month before it's release. The reason for this self-imposed gag order is Patti's frustration over the time gamers must endure from a title's announcement to its eventual release. "...our production time is long, so we don't want to tire people out. I hate when big publishers show something one or two years before the launch."

Whatever the title will be, I can't wait to play it. Limbo was one of my favorite downloadable games that I played in 2010, and if this one is planning to be even weirder and crazier, then it's time to dig out that art house scarf and ponder some symbolism.

Blizzard apologizes for slur-filled BlizzCon video

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 08:30 AM PDT

Blizzard apologizes for slur-filled BlizzCon video screenshot

Following musician George 'Corpseater' Fisher's use of anti-gay language at BlizzCon 2011, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime has issued an apology.

"It was shortsighted and insensitive to use the video at all, even in censored form," he writes. "We realize now that having even an edited version at the show was counter to the standards we try to maintain in our forums and in our games. Doing so was an error in judgment, and we regret it."

"The bottom line is we deeply apologize for our mistakes and for hurting or offending anyone. We want you to have fun at our events, and we want everyone to feel welcome." Morhaime ends by saying, "As a leader of Blizzard, and a member of the band, I truly hope you will accept my humblest apology."

It's an unfortunate situation to see crop up, as is any that revolves around diversity, but it's also one the industry can hopefully learn from. The full apology is attached below.

Dear members of the Blizzard community,

I have read your feedback and comments about this year’s BlizzCon, and I have also read the feedback to the apology from Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftain. I’d like to respond to some of your feedback here.

As president of Blizzard, I take full responsibility for everything that occurs at BlizzCon.

It was shortsighted and insensitive to use the video at all, even in censored form. The language used in the original version, including the slurs and use of sexual orientation as an insult, is not acceptable, period. We realize now that having even an edited version at the show was counter to the standards we try to maintain in our forums and in our games. Doing so was an error in judgment, and we regret it.

The bottom line is we deeply apologize for our mistakes and for hurting or offending anyone. We want you to have fun at our events, and we want everyone to feel welcome. We’re proud to be part of a huge and diverse community, and I am proud that so many aspects of the community are represented within Blizzard itself.

As a leader of Blizzard, and a member of the band, I truly hope you will accept my humblest apology.

You put some tower defense in my AC:Revelations

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 08:00 AM PDT

You put some tower defense in my AC:Revelations screenshot

Being a Templar isn't all that. The Catholic Church hunts you down and when you think you're safe hidden away in the shadows, a bloody assassin stabs you in the neck. From behind! Still, it has its perks. One of them is to send masses of mercenaries, or people you've manipulated into following you, to their death -- in waves, of course.

Den Defense is a feature in Assassin's Creed: Revelations that lets Ezio help out the freedom loving Ottomans in a tower defense mini-game. Dens are the new Borgia Towers, and they need defending. You can add better defenses as you kill Templars and raise morale. It looks like a fun little distraction between all the platforming and the "eeeeeeeeiiiiiiihhhh!" sounds you'll hear whenever you jump into a bale of hay.

"EEEEEIIIIIHHHHH!!"

Extra Life marathon raised $1.1 million for CMN Hospitals

Another year and another successful Extra Life gaming marathon has concluded; and after tallying up all of the donations made thanks to the effort of over 24,000 gamers across North America, Extra Life has surpassed its goal and raised $1.1 million for children's hospitals.

CEO of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, John Lauck said, "This remarkable miracle of raising $1.1 million through the Extra Life marathon will truly make a difference in the lives of children in local communities."

Destructoid's Extra Life marathon went spectacularly well with the community raising $6909.16, surpassing all previous years totals. On top of giving away ridiculous amounts of prizes from some generous sponsors, we also got to share in some moments that will live in Destructoid history forever, especially since it's in GIF format. One thing is for sure, we couldn't have gotten to that amount without our fantastic community's help. You are amazing!

Arkedo working with Sega on 'Project Hell Yeah'

The team behind the rather good Arkedo Series of indie games has been signed by publisher Sega for a new title dubbed "Project Hell Yeah." I'm hopeful the tentative name sticks.

A few details can be gathered from the development blog ramblings. This game -- Arkedo's biggest one yet -- has been in development for nine months, apparently. There are also "MEGATONS" of monsters, and "you will beat the sh*t out of them. Sometimes, literally."

I like the octopus guy with the exposed brain and gentlemanly hat.

Amazon Lightning Deals include El Shaddai and a few more

Amazon Lightning Deals include El Shaddai and a few more screenshot

Amazon has opened up its Gold Box today, and as fate would have it, there are a handful of discounted videogames hiding in there. Currently, the Lightning Deal is for El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron ($37.99, Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3). Jonathan applauded the game for its creative use of visual storytelling.

The 12:00pm Pacific deal seems like it could be Deadly Premonition, and an hour later, it's "A multiplayer fighting game that utilizes the advanced capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS." Hmm, sounds like either Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition or Dead or Alive Dimensions. Be sure to check back!

Friday Night Fights: You guessed it, Battlefield 3

Friday Night Fights: You guessed it, Battlefield 3 screenshot

I get it, I really do. The last thing you want is another damn post about Battlefield 3. It's already seen plenty of coverage this week, both here and across the web, and you're just as tired as I am reading of about it.

But in spite of its ongoing server issues, the hassle caused by BattleLOL Battlelog and the fact that you can't bring a full squad into a match to save your life, the game is just plain fun! Literally everything I've ever loved about the Battlefield series is present and in vibrant colors with this latest installment, and I couldn't be more excited to play it with my Dtoid brethren tonight!

So instead of wasting our time talking about it, let's all go play it instead! (Just don't forget to platoon up before hand!)

New to FNF? Read this! Each week, a bunch of us Dtoiders get together to play videogames online! It's a 100% community-run event, so feel free to join in or even host something yourself!

The planning for FNF starts in the forums, where community members volunteer to host matches and post their pertinent details (game, time, Gamertag, etc.). Then, every Friday, reminder posts go up in the community blogs followed by a recap post here on the front page for last-minute planning.

To join in, simply send a friend request to the match host! (Don't forget to say you're from Dtoid!) If you'd rather host something yourself, sound off in the comments section below!

We hope to see you online!

Good Old Games offers 50% off select titles for Halloween

Good Old Games offers 50% off select titles for Halloween screenshot

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but it's good to see Good Old Games competing with Steam when it comes to putting on regular sales. Not to be outdone by Valve's own Halloween sale, Good Old Games are reducing a selection of scary titles by 50%.

There's quite a few good titles included here, from the sci-fi shooter Shadowgrounds, to the silly Ghost Master. There's also some real old school titles like the first and second Phantasmagoria titles, and the first three Gabriel Knight games.

There's a few titles that are available on both Steam and Good Old Games, so the best advice is to see which offers you the best value for money. Either way, 50% off some of these titles is might tempting.
