| The Binding of Isaac gets a demo, more content incoming Posted: 09 Oct 2011 03:30 PM PDT As much as I love The Binding of Isaac, I can see why certain people might be hesitant to blindly buy, even with the affordable price. You now have one less excuse, however: the game's creators have put a Flash demo up on (where else?) Newgrounds. Featuring two levels, eight bosses, and 60+ items, the demo is a good glimpse at how the full game handles and should tell you whether or not this is your jam. According to Edmund McMillen, sales of Isaac are currently rivaling Super Meat Boy's release numbers. As for what's next, expect a free Halloween update that introduces 20+ new items, three new bosses, another playable character, more achievements, and a "final chapter," which "should be a much bigger challenge." Until then, more bug fixes should continue making the rounds. |
| HAWP: The ultimate permadeath run Posted: 09 Oct 2011 02:30 PM PDT Ashly is a man's man (???). A permadeath run of FarCry 2? That's for babies. No, she's got a bigger fish to fry. | Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet add-on set for Wednesday Posted: 09 Oct 2011 01:30 PM PDT
"Shadow Hunters," the new five-dollar add-on for Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet, goes live this Wednesday on Xbox Live. For real this time. Picking up after the conclusion, this mode (1-4 players) appears to mash up various game concepts in a new way. "We started with the exploration and puzzle elements from the Campaign," says Fuelcell Games' Joe Olson, "and incorporated those with the procedurally generated level and fast paced decision making elements from Lantern Run, then pushed these ideas even further..." I enjoyed Lantern Run quite a bit, although the experience was dampened by the occasional (but persistent) griefers who would purposely sabotage the mission. Next time, guys, at least put some effort into providing creative online abuse. |
| New trailer for PSP horror game Corpse Party Posted: 09 Oct 2011 12:00 PM PDT Remember that strange, completely random trailer for Corpse Party showing a bunch of school students being killed? Yeah, well XSEED has decided to explain exactly what the game's about in their recent PlayStation Blog post. Corpse Party is an upcoming horror adventure game coming exclusively to the PSP (only available as a download on the PlayStation Store) with an anime art style. The game has you play as a multitude of characters as they attempt to escape the haunted Heavenly Host Elementary. One mistake is all it takes to "either immediately or eventually lead you down a path toward one of the game's vast multitudes of 'Wrong Ends,' or bad endings -- generally long, drawn-out and meticulously detailed death scenes." This, along with "squishy sound effects" basically means that this game contains some bloody gruesome stuff. No release date other than fall of this year has been given. | Waluigi is a fully fleshed out hacked character for Brawl Posted: 09 Oct 2011 10:00 AM PDT I've said it before and I'll say it again, Nintendo should make these Super Smash Bros. Brawl hacks official, and allow players to swap custom characters and gameplay tweaks just like they can with custom made stages. This update to the Waluigi hack brings the character a close as homebrew programmers could ever hope to get to creating a Brawl character that looks and plays like something that came from the official dev team. Sure, there are a few cracks in the paint here and there, but on the whole, this it the Waluigi I wish was in Brawl in the first place. My favorite bit is probably his final smash, which has a Wesker-ish, Raging Demon quality to it that I really enjoy. I don't know what's up with the ability that Kirby gets from eating him though. Is that some sort of silent-but-deadly belch? Is he supposed to be yelping "WA!" in the patented Waluigi style, but they left out the sound effect? Or maybe it's just another mystery to add to the pile of oddities that make up the abhorrent, genetic anomaly that is Waluigi? Either way, I'm downloading this dude ASAP. Super Smash Bros. | Custom EarthBound sprites are sex for the soul Posted: 09 Oct 2011 08:00 AM PDT Remember that collage of hundreds of videogame stars made to look like Mega Man sprites? Wasn't that neato keen? What would you say to the same kind of treatment, only in the style of EarthBound / Mother? Would you also approve? You ought to! Pikosaru, a member of Japanese art community Pixiv and a huge Mother fan, has posted several art style crossovers, including a big, honkin', wallpaper-sized beast that features such characters as Conker, the viruses from Dr. Mario, and even the Axem Rangers from Super Mario RPG. He also has smaller, game-specific collections for Chrono Trigger, F-Zero, Street Fighter, and others. Even the Gorillaz make an appearance! My feelings towards these masterpieces are perfectly summed up by the Engrish banner that cuts through the F-Zero piece: "Faster than the sound guys came." Damn right, I came faster than the sound guys! Pikosaru's Page [Pixiv] |
| Pokemon are oriental demons, Minecraft stops bible study Posted: 09 Oct 2011 07:00 AM PDT Just like videogames, religon can bring people together, inspire them to be the best person that they can be, and even help pull them out of depression, addiction, and other harmful frames of mind. Also like videogames, religion can also cause people to feel entitled, inspired, or otherwise compelled to commit acts of discrimination, violence, and other forms of destruction. Maybe that's why some faith-based folks feel so competitive with videogames, as to some, they are capable of offering worlds that are even more compelling than what religious texts have to offer. This isn't the first time we've seen a holy man try to knock Pokemon down a peg, but... Minecraft? That's a new one. This gentleman hates a game that provides children with a place to learn patience, resource management, and the feeling of pride that comes from being constructive and imaginative, and it doesn't even have any magic wands! But don't tell him that sometimes Minecraft sometime has Pokemon in it. That would probably scare the sh*t out of him. Can someone build a few churches and/or crucifixes in Minecraft and send them to this guy? But no dead ravens please! Dead ravens are like kryptonite to this person. | Forums, we have them: October 2011 Posted: 09 Oct 2011 06:00 AM PDT Welcome back my lovelies. It's that time once again where I recap for you all the fascinating forum news and happenings of the past month. We had some creativity, thread derailment and badges, and that's just in the first few paragraphs. SeptemBEARDtoid has finally come to an end. Nihil challenged his fellow manly men of Destructoid not to shave for the whole month of September. The results were a mixed bag of facial hair and scruffy lost dreams. Way to go men.

| Comments of the week: Hugh Jackman vs child Posted: 09 Oct 2011 05:00 AM PDT I'd watch that for a dollar.
Say hello and goodbye to omar little. He was banned earlier this week because he was either too gangster, or not gangster enough. I forget which.
And now, to introduce a new section:

| Super Mario 3D Land booms all up on your rang Posted: 09 Oct 2011 04:00 AM PDT Like diehard football fans who love watching the draft just as much as as the Superbowl, I love watching the release of high profile videogames to see how well they sell. Case in point: Super Mario 3D Land. Of course, it's unlikely that it will totally bomb, but the fact that it's a Mario game isn't a guarantee that it's going to be a huge hit either. The loyalty of Mario fans is a fickle thing. Just look at the disparity in sales between Super Mario Sunshine and New Super Mario Bros. Wii (as of 2010). Of course, Super Mario 3D Land is on a portable, which is arguably a very different market. It's a place where modern Mario games are even more potentially profitable -- New Super Mario Bros on the DS went on to be the second best-selling game in the series. However, that was a very different time, on a very different console. Will Super Mario 3D Land suffer due to the 3DS's relatively small install base, or will the game go on to be a stratospheric hit and a monumental system seller? I CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT! As for me, I'll be buying the game no matter what. I really enjoyed what I played of it at E3, and as a huge fan of suit-focused Mario titles, there's no way I could pass this one up. The revelation of the Boomerang Bros. suit's return only works to further cement my desire for the game. Then again, I'm far from the typical Mario fan, so my intent to buy this sucker on launch day doesn't mean that the masses will go for it, right? I guess we'll see when the game drops next month. | Gundam 3DS game getting a sexy Char Aznable 3DS model Posted: 09 Oct 2011 02:00 AM PDT Monster Hunter is getting a 3DS bundle. LovePlus is getting a 3DS bundle. Gosh darnit, Gundam needs a 3DS bundle of its own, too! The upcoming SD Gundam G Generation 3D, to be released on December 22, will drop alongside sexy red 3DS bundle inspired by Gundam series poster child Char Aznable. This is actually not the first time a Nintendo console has paid homage to the helmeted wonder, but this time around, you'll also receive an AR card featuring Char's custom Zaku II ride. Both standalone and bundled copies of the game will also receive an AR card of the AGE-1 Gundam from the latest television series. The bundle, which contains the custom 3DS, the game, the cards, and all the typical 3DS trimmings, will be priced at 21,090 yen (about $275). Christ, that's a lot of money! | Bit.Trip Runner is getting a strange-looking HD sequel Posted: 09 Oct 2011 12:00 AM PDT The Bit.Trip series proper may be over, but there is more in store for CommanderVideo. Taking a page out of the Square Enix playbook, Gaijin Games is prepping a direct sequel to the fourth installment, Runner, and it will be available on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network some time in early 2012. Entitled Bit.Trip Presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien (Wow! What a name!), the game promises a slew of new abilities, achievements, and... actually, there's not that much info yet. All we have right now are the above teaser video and a redesigned look for the Commander, which you can see in the gallery below. For better or worse, we're not in 8-bit Land anymore. Also, what's with the "presents" in Bit.Trip Presents? Is this an indication that Runner 2 will be so removed from its predecessor that it will effectively be a standalone experience? Will this be like a Pac-Man 2 type of reconfiguration? All we can do is follow the game's dev blog and watch the mystery unfold. BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien CULVER CITY, CA – October 8, 2011 – Gaijin Games and Aksys Games are proud to reveal their new project called BIT.TRIP Presents: Runner 2, Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, which will be released on Xbox LIVE® Arcade and PlayStation©Network in 2012. "Runner 2 is going to blast open your mind like a blooming flower and Gaijin Games is going to pollinate it with our fun proboscises" -@MikeNRoush "With its new art style, fantastic music, and gameplay innovations, Runner 2 will make your brain glands SWEAT BLOOD!" -@AlexNoisy Inspired by the BIT.TRIP series originally released on Nintendo platforms, CommanderVideo makes his debut in an all-new re-imagined downloadable game with a ton of features that we hope even CommanderVideo and CommandgirlVideo can handle:

| OnLive will get six new indie titles this fall Posted: 08 Oct 2011 11:00 PM PDT If you're an OnLive user and you're a huge fan of indie gaming, you've no doubt already checked out the likes of Braid, Trine, World of Goo and The Maw. Joining the ranks of these indie classics this fall are six more beloved indie titles; those being Orcs Must Die!, Magicka, Limbo, Bastion, Avadon: The Black Fortress and Space Chem. Anyone out there who has somehow managed to avoid these spectacular titles just because you're waiting to get them through OnLive or just plain didn't pick them up on literally every other single platform out there, you would be doing yourself a disservice by not picking them up now. No specific date was given, but it shouldn't be too far off. OnLive is putting six new indie games online this fall [Joystiq] |
| Arkham City gets yet another skin: Sinestro Corps Posted: 08 Oct 2011 08:00 PM PDT As if Batman: Arkham City wasn't already stuffed to the brim with more skins than we can handle, it seems The Bat will also be donning his Sinestro Corps attire thanks to a Green Lantern Blu-ray combo pack. According to an unnamed and supposedly handsome Joystiq tipster, a limited run of these Green Lantern Blu-rays will contain a PSN voucher for the Sinestro Corps duds. Of all the costumes revealed so far, this is easily the most exciting considering Batman's previous run-in with Sinestro. It seems this one is exclusive to Best Buy, but developer Rocksteady has already confirmed that all of the game's myriad preorder skins will be available "more broadly" after launch so here's hoping that applies to Sinestro Corps' as well. Green Lantern is due out this coming Friday, the 14th. Green Lantern Extended Cut Blu-Ray combo pack to include Batman: Arkham City Sinestro Corps skin [Joystiq] |
| Here's some screens for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Posted: 08 Oct 2011 05:00 PM PDT A new batch of screenshots for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon recently came out and, as you might expect, they contain some jet planes that you can expect to take for a spin yourself. They are not just any jet planes though, as these are four newly revealed jets; the F-4E "Phantom II," F-15E "Strike Eagle," F-16F "Fighting Falcon" and FA-18F "Super Hornet" all round out the list. They all contain various stats and ease-of-control, with the Phantom II being notable because it can only be obtained by pre-ordering the game before its October 11th release date and the Super Hornet sounding like it is the end-all jet to use because of its ability to maneuver easily at any speed and seemingly having no weaknesses. If you would like to see extended descriptions of the planes, you can find those below. While you're at it, why not check out the gallery? F-15E Strike Eagle F-16F Fighting Falcon F-4E Phantom II |
