The9 expands to Korea with PlanetSide 2

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 08:50 AM PDT

The9, an online game operator and developer in China, has really turned a corner over the past year. I still remember the days when The9 was reportedly on the verge of closure after losing the rights for World of Warcraft China, with the game reportedly bringing around 50% of the company’s earnings. The massive change started when Mr Tony Park (picture below, middle) was brought in from Korea as the Vice CEO to steer the company out of trouble, which he efficiently did.

Today, The9 announced the opening of its Korea services, beginning with 6 titles (including web games like Pax Nora) including Sony Online Entertainment’s PlanetSide 2 and Free Realms. This means that The9 will be publishing PlanetSide 2 in both China (link) and Korea. Mr Tony Park did not forget Sony Online Entertainment’s support, and send his thanks to the company’s CEO, Mr John Smedley.

From my point of view, I was really expecting the company’s closure back then after negative reports just streamed in back then. I had a rather positive post back in March last year (link), and it seems my prediction was rather spot-on.The9′s effort to push into the English market, though, faded after the rather lacklustre debut title, Three Kingdoms Brawler (link). Will the English market be forgotten? Time will tell.

Grand Theft Auto V Announced

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 08:50 AM PDT

Grand Theft Auto V

Out of nowhere, Rockstar Games today confirmed the existence of Grand Theft Auto V.

We had long suspected it was in the works, with analyst Michael Pachter pegging its release as possibly coming as soon as 2011 due to the contracts for several key Rockstar employees set to end next year. (We’d also heard reports its release was expected to fall within 2012.) When those contracts were extended earlier this year, the rush to get the game out (from publisher Take-Two’s perspective) was no longer there and so it seemed as if we could be waiting longer to hear about the game, particularly with Rockstar suddenly interested in talking about Max Payne 3.

However, Rockstar’s website today featured the signature GTA logo with the roman numeral for five (and the word “five” plastered on top of it). There’s nothing else to be seen there with one exception: a date for the first trailer, which will be out next Wednesday, November 2.

There has been plenty of evidence that GTA V was in the works; parody domains, casting calls, and more have pointed to the game being set in Hollywood or the Los Angeles area, an area that was partially tackled by San Andreas, which also featured locations based on Las Vegas and San Francisco.

As has been pointed out several times, the green pattern in the “V” seems to match what’s seen on a $5 bill. Some have taken this to mean the game will be set in Washington, DC, which certainly seems like a possibility.

Cabal II (KR)

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 01:51 PM PDT

So, the day has finally arrived. ESTsoft has finally announced the date for the very first Closed beta phase for Cabal II. As you can see above, it will begin on 3 November early next month, which is before G*Star begins. However, it will only last until 5 November, perhaps just a short teaser test.

In development for 4 years, switching from CryEngine 2 to 3 half way through development, it will be the first public appearance for the game. It hid in the Business to Business (B2B) area at last year’s G*Star if you did not know. How will the sequel fair? I can’t wait.
