| Fez wins over the audience at Fantastic Arcade Posted: 25 Sep 2011 04:00 PM PDT Another year of Austin's annual videogame festival Fantastic Arcade has come to an end, but not without a couple winners, losers (haha!), and pissed-off Norwegians. Seriously, don't make eye-contact with them. They will mess your sh*t up. The biggest winner is also the most predictable one: Fez takes home the Audience Choice Award along with a neat Lego statue. Faraway (by Little--Eyes) won the Best in Show award, which would be pretty impressive if I knew anything about the panel of judges. My game of show? GUN BULLET! Pinballz Arcade were nice enough to bring its cabinet to the show and set it on free-play. I played it obsessively over the past couple days. Click below for the full list of winners.
For those of you foaming at the mouth for some quasi-3D indie-platforming action, word has it that you may have to wait a while longer. Fez is saying, "Screw you" to 2011 and moving to an early 2012 release date. Damn, now we'll never know if it would have outsold Skyrim! Once I get done flunking out of college and typing up some film reviews for Flixist -- which you better read everyday for awesome movie news -- I'll have the rest of my Fantastic Arcade previews up for you all to read, including a first look at Serious Sam: The Random Encounter and what may be Pixeljunk's finest game yet (hint: It's not 4am).

| RAGE: Three Xbox 360 discs, 8GB PS3 install Posted: 25 Sep 2011 03:30 PM PDT Never has the name RAGE been more appropriate for console gamers, with word that non-computer versions of id Software's upcoming shooter will have some controversial requirements -- whichever machine you pick. The Xbox 360 version will need three DVDs in order to house all the pretty images of hideous mutants, while the PS3 version carries an 8GB installation. Ouch! "Sony was great. Kudos to Sony for letting us do that. They don't allow every game to do that. So definitely, hats off," said creative director Tim Willits. He also recommended that 360 users still install the game, and that they can "Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two. You don't really need to install the multiplayer disc if you're really tight on hard disk space." I argued in a freelance article last week that consoles had become little more than crappy PCs, and stuff like this really hammers it home. Remember when the benefits of consoles were the ability to just throw in a disc and start playing? Kudos to id for doing their best, but I'm starting to really struggle to find the pros of console gaming anymore. Rage: The Return of id Software [Eurogamer] |
| The Witcher 2 expansion and possible sequel hinted Posted: 25 Sep 2011 02:00 PM PDT Do you love Geralt of Rivia? Do you love stomping through the lands of Temeria, taking on creature and thug with blazing silver and steel? Or do you enjoy chatting up the ladies? Then don't put away your wolf-head just yet, Gerry, The Witcher 2 may yet receive an expansion along with a sequel. In a recent conversation with Eurogamer, game designer and writer Jan Bartkowicz spoke on the possibility of an expansion for The Witcher 2. "All I can say is we're planning on releasing something. [The Witcher 2.0 is] not the last update for The Witcher 2. That's what I can assure you." As for the likelihood of a third game, Bartkowicz said: "We still have one big title ahead of us in The Witcher franchise. All I can say is -- outside of when the pre-production starts and finishes -- with the story team we were probably in pre-production for The Witcher 3 during making The Witcher 2." Nothing official has been confirmed from CD Projekt Red on whether or not they will be releasing an expansion or a sequel, but a port of the PC version will be landing on the Xbox 360 sometime in the first quarter of 2012. The 360 version will include the content that will be releasing as The Witcher 2.0 for PC on September 29. There will be additional content available to purchase for the 360 as well, but lucky PC owners get to have this content for free. Ahh, it's a good time to be a PC gamer. | Cool Mario toys recreate key moments in series history Posted: 25 Sep 2011 01:00 PM PDT Keychains are one thing, but these? Now you're playing dirty, Japan! A pair of New Super Mario Bros.-branded figurines were released recently in Japan. These sets produce sound to recreate two very iconic moments in Mario history. The one on the right plays the warp jingle as Mario enters one pipe and emerges from the other. However, it's the one on the left that catches my eye -- a diorama of Mario stomping a Koopa Troopa shell against a staircase to rack up infinite 1UPs. Incredible. Both items are available on Amazon Japan for a respectable 777 yen (about $10) apiece. Of course, you'd need to order through a proxy service if you want these delivered outside of Japan. I need to get me the 1UP set, like, yesterday. New Super Mario Bros. Wii Sound Figures Released in Japan [Game Swag] |
| Bad dog! Zynga suffers 95% decline in profits Posted: 25 Sep 2011 12:00 PM PDT Whether it be due to lack of fresh and hip new IPs during it's first quarter of the year or spending too much on that fancy swivel chair, Zynga's year-on-year profits have taken a huge hit. From a recent SEC filing, Zynga shows that it's profits declined 95%, from $27.2 million to $1.3 million. On top of that, for the first time in Zynga's history, microtransaction and ad revenue has dropped 4%. This is not too surprising considering this follows at a 4% drop in daily user activity. I suppose some people just don't care about their chickens anymore. But worry not, faithful Facebook agriculturalist, even with this drop Zynga's revenue continues to stay in the range of cartoonish supervillian. It's overall revenue for this quarter did show a 15% increase from last quarter, and with continued support for one of the most played social games on the planet, this dog has nothing to worry about. | How to get Gears of War 3's chicken-firing Cluckshot Posted: 25 Sep 2011 11:00 AM PDT Part of what makes this Gears of War 3 Easter egg so fun is that it's a stark contrast to how serious the series takes itself. The other part is that it's a gun which fires live, exploding chickens. The Cluckshot, a fowl-centric take on the Boomshot, is a secret weapon that can be obtained in single-player on Insane difficulty. The method itself delves into spoiler territory, so I'll point you to GameFront's video walkthrough and say nothing more given how recent Gears 3 still is. Wonder what other surprises are hiding in there. Gears of War 3 Cluckshot Easter Egg – How to Unlock It (VIDEO) [GameFront] |
| Black Lodge: The faux Atari 2600 Twin Peaks game Posted: 25 Sep 2011 10:00 AM PDT Seeing as how we'll never get a Twin Peaks game in the same vein as L.A. Noire, sad as that makes me, this Atari 2600 tribute will have to do. It's a free game for PC and Mac fittingly called Black Lodge. The instruction manual and box art are representative of the era, which is a great touch. Similarly, the game itself isn't immediately forthcoming with what you (Agent Cooper) are supposed to do. The end result isn't particularly fun to play, but entertaining? Sure. And strangely creepy. I swear, every other week another one of our readers gets into Twin Peaks for the first time. Figured there are enough of you now to make this worth a mention. Black Lodge, A Real Twin Peaks Video Game [Welcome to Twin Peaks via Game Informer] |
| It's not Naughty Dog's fault that I don't like Uncharted Posted: 25 Sep 2011 09:00 AM PDT Our own Jim Sterling recently posted an article about how he sometimes feels alienated from the gaming community because he doesn't appreciate "classic" games like Shadow of the Colossus. It's a great piece, but admittedly, a little part of me felt bitter while reading it. "You think it's hard not liking a PS2 title that sold under a million copies in the United States?' I whined to myself "What do you think it's like to be a non-fan of Uncharted, GTA, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, and just about every other 'realistic', overblown, action-focused, power fantasy game on the market today?" The thing is, there is a chance I could have liked Uncharted, if it focused less on pretending to be an action movie, and more on taking advantage of the fact that it was a videogame. This whole "try to make every game like a Hollywood movie" thing that Sony has picked up in the PS3 era has been pretty rough for an old Ape Escape/Gitaroo Man/Parappa-days Sony fan like myself. Sadly, it sounds like I almost had a chance of enjoying Uncharted, but according to Naughty Dog, "Sony kept pushing for a more realistic game in all respects. The market had changed a lot by then. The demographic was older and gritty shooters were really dominating. Sony wanted very much to get into that market share, it pushed all of its developers in this direction." Now that the Wii, the DS, and the iPhone have been "really dominating" for most of the past five years, I wonder if PS4 games are all going to be "pushed" to look like Wii Sports and Angry Birds? I might be down with that. Once upon a time, Uncharted was a Tolkien-inspired fantasy romp [Joystiq] |

| Hands-on with the League of Legends: Dominion beta Posted: 25 Sep 2011 08:00 AM PDT This week, Riot Games announced that it would be starting a limited-run beta session for the upcoming League of Legends mode, Dominion, during off-peak gameplay hours. I've gotten to experience this new mode during one of these sessions, and man was it fresh. For those of you who may not be familiar with Dominion, it's a new mode and map combo that seeks to drastically change the way this multiplayer online battle arena game plays. To those unfamiliar, this might not seem like much. I mean, in other genres, new modes and maps come out all the time, right? Well, think of LoL like it's baseball for a moment. Dominion does to this game what changing the diamond field to a circle would do for baseball. And not only does it shake things up, it seems (so far) to do so really well. Initially full of confusion at the unfamiliar yet beautifully detailed surroundings, it quickly became clear that this new mode was set to do away with a lot of the common staples of the genre to make for a more action-filled, fast-paced experience. I must take some time to single out the amazing audio design that has been done for Dominion. The round starts with a triumphant sound playing that really gets you pumped and ready to go when the setup phase concludes. The music will shift and change depending on conditions of the match, such as which team is winning and by how much. It's music that's unlike the more paced rhythmic drum beats and clicks of the normal gametype, instead favoring a much faster tempo, with violins playing faster and faster, drums beating with a primal fury, and the choir chanting on and on, urging your team back from the edge of defeat, or egging you to stay your place when your team has the upper hand. And it clings really well to the faster gameplay. The mode starts off with a deceptively long startup time of about one and a half minutes. In exchange, you always start off at level three -- and with a pile of gold in your wallet -- allowing you to begin with a good bit of equipment. This is great, considering the first thing you'll notice when the magical barrier finally drops is the lack of the three traditional lanes and minions trying to walk from one base to another. Instead, there is the outer ring, and it is always visible. There are five giant nodes situated along this perimeter, arranged like a star with the fifth one being at the top most point of the ring. There are minions, but they only walk from captured nodes to the nodes adjacent to the originating node. For the most part, there is no laning phase because of this, and there is little in the way of farming. Minions do give out more gold than in the normal mode here, but there are a lot less of them, and they also have a finite lifetime. Instead, more emphasis is placed on capturing the nodes, and defending them from the enemy champions. Captured nodes will cause damage to the enemy nexus, and an award of gold and experience is given to the champions involved in capturing it. The same is also true of champions that interrupt enemies from capturing an owned node. This also devalues killing enemy champions unless it serves either capturing or defending a node, as the gold obtained that way is only 100, as opposed to 300 in the normal mode. Most of the action so far seems to take place on the outer ring, but that does not mean you will be spending all of your time there, nor that it would be wise to keep walking along the always visible path. Inside the circle are a series of paths you can take to shortcut your way around the map. This area is also completely shrouded by the fog of war, save for one spot in the center where crystals that can be captured for a buff for a member of each team spawns. In here is also something new to League of Legends, mainly pickup items. There are two, one is a movement buff, and the other is a health pack. There are no neutral monsters at all on this map, and strategic maneuvering through buffs can help your team more efficiently defend or assault nodes. Dominion seems mostly balanced from what I have played so far, though it appears that some work still needs to be done with it. So far, I've only played with three champions: Irelia, Riven, and Lux. I've had success with all three; it seems that most champions are still very much viable here, although you may have to get used to building your character up with different items. Aside from just the faster startup, and the lack of a laning phase, there are also new items specific for this mode, and some of the old items are unusable. It also seems like the importance of your team's composition might have been toned down a notch, making room for more people to play who they want to. I think part of this lies in the drastically reduced respawn timers, maxing out at 20 seconds at level 18. It does seem to me though that characters that are fast, and stack movement speed like Master Yi, Irelia, and Teemo have a bit too favorable of an advantage, being able to maximize the use of the movement buffs to sneak their way to nodes on the complete opposite side of the circle. Dominion seems to be shaping up wonderfully so far. It's certainly the most impressive endeavor I think I've seen from Riot Games, or really, just any group of people working on a MOBA game at all. It only needs a little more work and balancing, but this could truly be a viable next step for the genre -- one that I think really opens up the idea that it can still evolve into something versatile. If you're interested in checking this out, it seems like the mode has been available around 5:00-8:00pm Eastern during the week, and 1:30-4:30PM Eastern on weekends. You can sign up for League of Legends here if you don't have an account already. |

| Study: 3D gaming unpopular among 3DS owners Posted: 25 Sep 2011 04:00 AM PDT Research group Interpret LLC claims that almost a third of 3DS owners feel the system's main attraction -- its 3D screen -- actively detracts from the gaming experience. Shockingly, there are even people who don't know the 3DS can do 3D! You'd think the name was a clue. Of the 1,600 people polled, only 60% knew that the handheld had a 3D function. Of that group, 28% knew that it didn't require 3D glasses to use. Among users who knew of the 3D feature, 28% thought it was detrimental to gameplay, 22% thought it was an improvement, and 13% played without it enabled. 1,600 isn't a huge number, but I've seen so many comments from people who claim they turn the 3D feature off after they've checked out how it looks on a new game. Personally, I try and always play with it enabled, but even I have to turn it down occasionally, because it can get really distracting. Nintendo recently advertised that the 3D could be turned off, seemingly aware that consumers might be turned off by the gimmick completely. When you have to assure people that your main selling point isn't mandatory, that doesn't look good. That's like the Vita promising consumers that you can play games with PSOne-era graphics. |

| The Tommy Wi-Show debuts and it's ... yep! Posted: 25 Sep 2011 03:00 AM PDT Notorious movie director Tommy Wiseau has rolled out his new videogame-based show, The Tommy Wi-Show and it is exactly what fans of his work were likely expecting. Tommy garbles his way through awkward scenes, and plays some videogames. This week, he tackles Mortal Kombat, and I won't spoil how the match goes, but he displays some surprising gaming skills. If anybody could prove that E-Sports is a real thing, it's Tommy. So yeah, this video is now a thing that has officially happened. I feel good about that. |
| Rumor: Full Xbox Live integration in Windows Phone 7 Posted: 25 Sep 2011 02:00 AM PDT Windows 8 comes with the promise of improved PC gaming; Microsoft has been far from shy about that. They’re continuing the trend started in 7 by further optimizing the OS for games. Given the company’s recent push towards brand unity, many made the logical leap to Xbox 360 games on PCs -- why not, right? Last week, however, Microsoft confimed the presence of Xbox Live titles in Windows 8 along with the entirety of the Xbox Live experience. Sadly, no support for Xbox discs. Another area that may be getting some gaming love is Microsoft’s phone division. A patent arose on Friday concerning a new Windows Phone with swappable pieces. The included diagram shows a slide-out keyboard with multiple variants including a gamepad. We’ve seen how well a gaming-centric phone can do thanks to Sony’s Xperia Play or the NGage before it, but it’s exciting nonetheless. Obviously this brings up the topic of gaming on a smartphone. Microsoft has always steered clear of the handheld gaming market and opted NOT to develop an Xbox Portable. With the rise of mobile gaming via smartphones however, it would only make sense that they fully integrate Xbox Live into their phones. Live already has a home on Windows Phone 7, but it’s far from complete. |
| Mind blown! You can play games in 2D on a 3DS! Posted: 25 Sep 2011 12:00 AM PDT Nintendo of Europe has posted a banner ad on their home page for the upcoming Metallic Red 3DS model. In addition to sporting a fiery finish, this latest 3DS also comes packed with some incredible new features. Not only can you now play your entire DS software library in glorious 2D, you can even turn the 3D effect OFF on 3DS titles! Whoooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaa!!! This new marketing push is meant to clear up confusion about what the 3DS can and cannot do, specifically that you don't need to have 3D on and that old DS games won't magically develop a third dimension. I understand that Nintendo is trying to get hardware moving, but it's gotta be super embarrassing -- not to mention pretty hilarious -- to have to basically shake each and every one of your customers and say, "You are doing it wrong, dingus!" Apparently, this is limited to the countries under the umbrella of Nintendo of Europe. As far as I can tell, the American and Japanese branches still treat their consumers as having some semblance of brain function. (Great tip, Isshak!) |
| Huge patch for Mortal Kombat fixes balance, desync bug Posted: 24 Sep 2011 06:00 PM PDT If you play Mortal Kombat regularly, you've no doubt experienced, or at least heard of, the infamous "desynchronization error." The bug plagued players who decided to pick certain DLC costumes, alternate costumes and even some default costumes and caused their game to disconnect in the middle of the match, prompting the desynchronization error message. It happened to both consoles at one point, and then was later a problem only experienced on Xbox 360. You can now resume playing and selecting those Klassic Kostumes without fear because NetherRealm has finally released an enormous patch that not only finally gets rid of that infuriating bug, but also fixes a grocery list of balancing issues for every single character and the game in general.
