Men of War: Condemned Heroes saves you from the gulag Posted: 08 Jul 2011 04:00 PM PDT
If you like your real-time strategy games to have a historical basis and a distinctly Eastern European flavor, then developer 1C has got you covered. Men of War: Condemned Heroes will be the next installment of its popular WWII series. As its name implies, Men of War: Condemned Heroes will offer players the chance to play as one of the infamous Soviet Penal Companies, made up of court-martialed officers. They were given another chance to serve Mother Russia by becoming lowly soldiers in battalions that took on some of the most dangerous missions between 1942 and 1945 as the Soviets made their way west to Germany. Still, better than rotting in some rat-infested gulag in Siberia, eh comrade? Men of War: Condemned Heroes will feature four different campaigns with fifteen missions, as well as a detailed and historically accurate portrayal of the men who fought in the Penal Companies, with promised "ultra-detailed, photorealistic human models." Considering we're talking about WWII Soviet prisoners, I wouldn't mind a bit less detail in the visuals, to be honest. Men of War: Condemned Heroes is scheduled for a release in early 2012. [Image] |
New Destructoid Episode: Battlefield Reefer Madness Leak! Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:33 PM PDT
Happy Friday, Destructoid readers! Before you head out to your local pub or sporting event, why not take approximately 13 minutes and 27 seconds out of your day first to catch up on some video game news? First up on tonight's episode, we've got some very important news about Skyrim's menu system. I'm sure you've all been waiting with bated breath for that one. I've also got the dish on the specs you'll need to play Battlefield 3 and its new class system, along with some much-awaited details on the upcoming Planetside 2. I conclude today's episode with a quick story on L.A. Noire's new downloadable case "Reefer Madness," but not before Max chimes in to talk about the recent Gears of War 3 leak and some Pokemon nonsense. I just tune out when he talks about that stuff. And that's about it for our Friday edition. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go hibernate for 48 hours. Have a safe and happy weekend! |
If you're a girl, go buy a Techno Kitten Adventure shirt Posted: 08 Jul 2011 02:30 PM PDT
A lot of times, girls don't have the opportunity to buy licensed t-shirts in their own sizes, having to make do with guys' sizes. Luckily for them, this Techno Kitten Adventure shirt is available only in girls' sizes. You can now buy them in t-shirt or tank top varieties and show your love for an iOS and Xbox Live Indie Game that is like having sex with a unicorn. Sadly for us guys, there is no corresponding male t-shirt adorned with kittens and rainbows and stars, and I have no idea why. People buy shirts with Nyan Cat on them, I don't know why they think guys wouldn't snap this one up. |

EVE Online, one of the largest MMOs around, is about to get a bit bigger. Developer CCP has partnered with Nexon Co. to localize the game's client software for Japan this fall. CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said, "Having considered Nexon's excellent reputation as Asia's leading game developer and publisher, they were the obvious choice in who the best possible partner would be to help us make this game more accessible to our growing fan base in Japan." Nexon Co., who is also responsible for popular Eastern MMOs like Maple Story, will make EVE Online available through its online portal. "We are pleased to have this opportunity to be a part of CCP's ongoing plans to provide premium services to their subscribers," stated spokesperson Seung-Woo Choi. "Our shared commitment to quality and excellence is the ultimate cornerstone from which to build an even greater gaming experience for Japanese video game enthusiasts." I played and really loved EVE back in the day. I thought it was one of the deeper, more interesting MMOs. The fun of exploring the huge universe hasn't been matched by any game I've played since. Now that I think of it, I might just have to restart my account... |
Bid on these Street Fighter skate decks for a good cause Posted: 08 Jul 2011 01:30 PM PDT
Sometimes, I feel like gamer-organized charities are an attempt to karmically balance out all the negative energy that's associated with the fandom. All those harsh words in online deathmatches and fights between fanboys that escalate into death threats have to be made up for somehow. Whatever the reason, Capcom had several artists design Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition skate decks to be auctioned off for Music for Relief's Japanese tsunami relief fund. Things are still pretty bad over there, and rebuilding is slow, so hopefully these skate decks pull in some good money. Plus, look how awesome some of them are! I know that if I was a skateboarder, I'd want to be rocking that Dudley deck, because Dudley is the man. Consider heading over to CharityBuzz and placing a bid! The Sims Medieval expansion promises nobles and pirates Posted: 08 Jul 2011 01:00 PM PDT
Hot on the heels of The Sims Medieval earlier this year comes The Sims Medieval: Pirates and Nobles, a new adventure pack that promises players more quests, treasure hunts, and new items for their kingdoms. Gamers will get the chance to play as a pirate or a noble, settling in either the warring regions of Tredony or Aarbyville and embarking on some epic adventures. On the noble side, you can choose between being a monarch, knight, or a humble blacksmith. On the pirate side, pack up your maps and shovels and search for that buried treasure. The pirate option seems a bit strange for a game called The Sims Medieval, but hey, pirates are hot at the moment, right? Just ask Johnny Depp; I think I saw him head in the general direction of the bank with a big grin on his face. The Sims Medieval: Pirates and Nobles is set to be released in August for PC and Mac. |

Headless Kamikaze stars in Serious Sam recruitment video Posted: 08 Jul 2011 12:00 PM PDT
Ever wonder what it would be like to be one of the bad guys in a first-person shooter, simply going about your business before being mowed down by the titular hero? Well wonder no more, as the recruitment drive to be one of Mental Horde's disposable henchmen is underway. And after watching this behind-the-scenes video of Headless Kamikaze Brett Sanderson, who wouldn't want to join up and teach Serious Sam a lesson? Okay, the decapitation and three-week lifespan aren't the best parts of the job, but the sense or camaraderie and brotherhood just can't be beat. "We're seeking recruits for every division from Headless Kamikaze and Scrapjacks, to accounting and risk management," says Horde's HR Director Beth Hughes. "But honestly, we'll accept anyone with a high school education and the willingness to have their head removed." As someone that's been hunting for a job for over six months, becoming a Headless Kamikaze sounds appealing, but I'd have to give up the beard, so that's a no go. If you're interested in a position as one of Mental Horde's minions, then you can head along to the Join Mental website and sign up. The website even features a handy app that shows you what you'll look like without your noggin! Exclusive: Serious Sam 3 Headless Kamikaze [Rock, Paper, Shotgun] |
2011 PAX 10 indie selection includes Fez, Jamestown, more Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:45 AM PDT
Each year, ten lucky independent games are highlighted at the Penny Arcade Expo. The PAX 10 line-up for this year's PAX Prime has been chosen. Here are the titles in question:
This has quickly become one of my favorite parts of the show. The area dedicated to these guys was packed last year, and I expect to see nothing less next month. |
Age of Zombies free on Amazon app store Posted: 08 Jul 2011 11:30 AM PDT
Age of Zombies, a mobile port from the PSP, is free today on the Amazon Apps Store for all Android users and is a nice counterpart to the free iOS app that was also announced for today. Keep in mind a wi-fi connection is required to download the game, so even if you snag it using your carrier's data package, you may have to wait to actually get it onto your phone. The mobile version of Age of Zombies doesn't have the tightest control but it is free, and still fun. You play as a man named Barry Steakfries, in a game that does not take itself seriously at all, killing cavemen, dinosaurs, mummies and ninjas that have all been turned into zombies. I'm not sure I would have paid for this, but it is certainly enjoyable for the zero dollars I spent. |

Two Worlds II: Pirates of the Flying Fortress screenshots Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:45 AM PDT
We really need a larger character limit for our headlines because games like this really limit my ability to sneak sexual threats in there. Anyway, here are some screens for the upcoming Two Worlds II expansion, Pirates of the Flying Fortress. You can click on the gallery for pictures of lovely monsters and stuff. Do that if you want. I don't mind what you want to do, really. |
Dragon's Dogma screens show off the pawns Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:30 AM PDT
Dragon's Dogma has friendly NPC characters called pawns and I know you don't believe me because you are cynical. That's why I have screens, which prove it. So you can shut up now. These pawns will be responsible for making up your party, so you'll need to get used to them. You can add up to three of them once you've recruited a following, and they can accompany you in the game's open world to assist in monster slaying. Now you know what pawns are. |
I don't know how to feel about Burnout Crash! Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:15 AM PDT
Burnout has become such a well loved franchise to gamers that the mere mention of Burnout lights up people's faces. So needless to say, I was pretty damn excited to hear that a new Burnout game was in the works. That is up until EA actually showed off what Burnout Crash! is. I got some hands-on time with Burnout Crash! at EA's Summer Showcase yesterday and even a day later, I'm still not sure if I actually liked or hated what I played. Burnout Crash! (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade [Previewed] If there was one flaw with Burnout Paradise, it was that it didn't have the beloved Crash mode that people adored in previous Burnout games. Burnout Crash! focuses on just the Crash mode and it's all presented from a top-down perspective. A small team developed Crash! through XNA with the main focus being on the easy to pick up gameplay above everything else. Crash! is definitely easy in that the controls are just steering and blowing up. That's it. Each mode starts off with you racing into the map until you've hit a car. After which you'll begin to blow yourself up with the A button (on the Xbox 360 controller) in whatever direction your holding the analog stick. The goal is to score as much points possible so you want to hit cars, buildings, and any other objects you can find in the levels. Exploding is limited based on a meter that fills up over time but causing damage fills this meter up quicker. Special vehicles will come along that offer more points and causing chain reactions will get you more points too. It all has a very pinball feel to it, right down to the sound effects and different music that plays. I tried out Burnout Crash! with the Kinect as well and it's like a very retarded game of hopscotch. You'll hold your hands up in front of you at first to steer. Once you've crashed, you'll jump in different directions in order to blow your vehicle up. For instance, jump forward and your car will explode upwards on the screen. Overall I think the Kinect feature is very forgettable. You'll maybe try it once, feel stupid jumping around like a kangaroo that's been hit upside the head and then go back to standard controls. While all 18 levels are pretty simple in terms of visuals, they are actually all based or inspired by levels in past Burnout games. As for the cars, there are five cars based on Burnout Paradise vehicles plus two new ones like the new garbage truck. There are also three game modes, the main one being Road Trip. This is the mode you'll want to play to unlock everything in the game and the main objective is to keep the crashes going as long as possible. You'll lose if you've let five cars escape. In Rush Hour mode, you have 90 seconds of free-for-all action. Once the time ends, everything blows up. In Pileup mode, the goal is to keep things on fire otherwise the challenge ends. Autolog will be part of Crash! and will feature a new addition called Autolog Challenges. There's no actual multiplayer so instead you'll be sending head-to-head challenges to people on your friends list in order to beat or maintain your high-scores on stages. The one good thing that Crash! has going for it is this Autolog feature. Having leaderboards against just your friends is a good motivation factor to keep on replaying games over multiple times. I think the name Burnout is what's throwing me off on Crash! Just hearing the name Burnout presents such high expectations that part of me thinks Criterion would have been better off simply calling this Crash! When you think of the name of a well established racing title, you expect an awesome racing game, right? What's next? A racing franchise that introduces on foot sections? Oh wait ... Actually, now that I've gotten this far in my preview, I know exactly what I didn't like about Crash! It's way too slow. Cars are coming in slow and the time it takes to explode takes to long. I have horrible patience when it comes to games as it is, but Crash! just felt like it was too slow. When I think cars exploding I think Michael Bay explosions everywhere hitting you hard and fast. That's what I want from Crash! Offer an ADHD mode and I'll be all about Crash! One last thing to add: I asked about a Wii version of the game and it doesn't look like Criterion is all that interested. It's a different story on the mobile side though as Criterion wouldn't out right deny the possibility. Crash! feels like it would fit perfectly on the iPad, no? |
Automatic game demos might be next for 3DS and Wii U Posted: 08 Jul 2011 10:00 AM PDT
Speaking with investors, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata proposed pushing out demos for 3DS and Wii U games to players automatically, in an effort to raise awareness. "When Nintendo would like to ask users to try a specific new game, we should deliver it to their Nintendo 3DS, and possibly Wii U, with their prior consent and recommend that they just try it and, if they like it, they can pay for it," explains Iwata. "In this way, we need to introduce users to unknown products." I'm all for this. More game demos, less OK Go videos, please. Neil Burger to write and direct Uncharted film Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:45 AM PDT
Neil Burger of The Illusionist and Limitless fame has signed on to write and direct the Uncharted film, according to Variety. He is reportedly reworking the project. As you might recall, David O. Russell left the movie due to creative differences. I'm guessing you do recall, based on the constant complaining about his vision for Uncharted. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a product more closely related to the videogames, now. Hooray? Neil Burger charts course for 'Uncharted' [Variety via Eurogamer] |
I'm sorry about this: Pokemen at Anime Expo Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:30 AM PDT
I apologize in advance. If you're one of those guys that clicks play before reading, I'm super sorry. This video is...wow. It comes from YouTube user acksonl, a guy that has gained some popularity by filming cosplay videos at conventions with his awesome steadicam rig and camera gear. We call him Steadycam Guy. The above video and its second part, both filmed at Los Angeles' Anime Expo last weekend, are a departure for acksonl. I promise you that his standard videos are...different from this one. This is its own thing. Wow. If you're still with me, hit the jump to see the second part, which features a bum talking about living on the streets of Los Angeles. He gets quite spiritual!
