It turns out I don't really want to Meet the Medic

It turns out I don't really want to Meet the Medic screenshot

Shortly after we published our post on Team Fortress 2 going the free-to-play route, Valve's "Meet the Medic" video started making the usual rounds.

As expected, it is of high enough quality to warrant its own separate post. And even beyond that, it's been such a long time coming, I couldn't turn it down.

But, seriously, my rib cage hurts now. Ow. Go download the latest update, or even the full game, now that it's completely free.

Live Show: Backlog to finish Parasite Eve II

[Backlog is the ongoing quest to rid Conrad Zimmerman's collection of unfinished games. As voted on by the Destructoid community, Conrad plays each game from start to finish live on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel every weeknight at 8pm Pacific]

The moment has come for Aya Brea to learn the truth about something or other. She's a clone, I think. There's at least one clone of her in this game, and I'm pretty sure it's the one I've been playing the whole game. That sentence makes almost no sense whatsoever and serves as an accurate descriptor of the last two weeks of this show.

It's all coming to a close tonight, however. Come join in for a last opportunity to hear me butcher already awful dialog in Parasite Eve II on Backlog. I'm playing live right now over on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel!

Arma 2: Free is now ready for download

Arma 2: Free is now ready for download screenshot

I spoke briefly about Arma 2: Free -- Bohemia Interactive's less-featured offering for those on a tight gaming budget -- during the E3 rush. That was a simple announcement post; the real news today is that the military sim is now ready for public consumption.

You can grab it for yourself by using this link and signing into Google, Steam, Facebook, OpenID, or Windows Live ID for activation purposes. I'm tempted to download it just so I can re-experience the pain of not being able to properly pilot the game's vehicles.

People have been saying things like "Peacock is going to be my main" when it comes to Skullgirls, and what luck! A trailer for Peacock arrived out of thin air!

I like these kind of trailers a lot, because it gives you a pretty good impression of the kind of flow and the type of combos that Skullgirls will have. And that's a lot better than a montage of different fighters who do flashy moves and "cool" stances if you ask me, regards of whatever fighting title it's for.

Killing Floor's Summer Sideshow event kicks off next week

Killing Floor's Summer Sideshow event kicks off next week screenshot

Tripwire Interactive continues down its path of generosity with even more free content for Killing Floor. This time, the promotion is called the Summer Sideshow, and it lasts from June 30 to July 22.

What is it? Simple! The Abusement Park map, further achievements, and theme-appropriate characters to prolong the life of this rather fun co-op survival game. I personally got the game from the Indie Potato bundle and have been looking for an excuse to get back into Killing Floor.

On a more serious note: Clowns. Why did it have to be clowns? Even those absurdly stupid alien ones in Killer Klowns from Outer Space creep me out.

Next for Team Fortress 2: Free-to-play status

Next for Team Fortress 2: Free-to-play status screenshot

For the Über Update festivities, Valve set up Team Fortress 2 with week-long free status. I thought this was a smart idea, but not entirely unexpected, since Valve has a history of pulling such stunts. Making the full game free, forever? Yeah, that's a bit more ballsy -- and it's apparently what the company is doing.

In an interview with Develop, Valve's Robin Walker outed the big plan. "We've been toying with the idea of making Team Fortress free-to-play ever since the Mann-conomy update," Walker reveals. Many of us figured Dota 2 would be the guinea pig, although this strategy will clearly be a good fit for TF2's established storefront.

"The data we got back from that update leads us to believe that TF2 would be more successful as a completely free product. We're always improving on the relationship we have with our customers, and we’re willing to run experiments if we think it will help us learn how to do that better."

Darkworks announces BlackDeath with lamest teaser ever

Darkworks announces BlackDeath with lamest teaser ever screenshot

Darkworks will be known to those who played Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare and checked the box to see who to blame. The studio's also working on Ubisoft's I Am Alive, which appears to be filling in the vaporware gap left behind by Duke Nukem Forever

The above paragraph was unnecessarily mean, so let me say that Darkworks is making BlackDeath, a new survival horror shooter for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Since horror games aren't too common this generation, I'm pretty happy to see what Darkworks can do.

It's about black smoke that infects people and turns them into not-zombies with various not-zombie powers. Now I'm going to be mean again and say that the above video is the worst teaser trailer I've ever seen.

New Street Fighter X Tekken videos from NorCal Regionals

This past weekend at the NorCal Regionals 9 tournament, Capcom was on hand to show off the most recent build of Street Fighter X Tekken. Many of your favorite fighting game pros, such as EG Justin Wong, EG Ricky Ortiz, Floe, and Marn, were on hand to compete in a single-elimination tournament organized by iPlayWinner.

Since then, iPlayWinner has uploaded HD direct-feed footage on their YouTube channel. Many of them were playing this game for the first time (aside from Justin Wong, who I caught beasting at this game at E3). More importantly, Seth Killian from Capcom was there to offer brilliant commentary, explaining the mechanics behind tag cancels, juggling, and how important character placement is to completing combos.

So if you are at all hyped for this game, make sure to check out the videos below!

On this Sonic day, take the E.G.G.M.A.N challenge!

On this Sonic day, take the E.G.G.M.A.N challenge! screenshot

To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th anniversary, I have undertaken the E.G.G.M.A.N challenge, and it's driven me into a state of almost comfortable insanity. In order to take the challenge, you play the above video, which is the Sonic Adventure 2 song "E.G.G.M.A.N" looped for fifteen minutes.

At first, the music (and your desire to know why someone looped this for fifteen minutes) will overwhelm you, but after about the third loop, you'll start to pick out lyrics. Eventually, you'll realize that he says that all of his machines are built for destruction, but that he then goes on to say that he will build an empire.

Before you hit the fifth playthrough, you will be obsessing over how one builds an empire with an army that can only destroy.

The death of 27% of your brain will follow.

BioShock Infinite trailer talks about opening windows

BioShock Infinite trailer talks about opening windows screenshot

In this brand new BioShock Infinite trailer, designer and lovely boy Ken Levine talks about opening windows into other worlds. It's a pretty interesting look at how 2K approaches the narrative in its games, but the bit you really want to wait for is the in-game clip at the end. Talk about fascinating!

BioShock Infinite is a game I'm trying not to be too hyped up about at this early stage, but it's increasingly difficult. My love of Levine's team as excellent storytellers is quite strong, and everything I've seen of Infinite looks fairly beautiful. Hard to keep the excitement down, really!

Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT

Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon screenshot

Before the review begins, I feel it's my duty to warn anybody who considers purchasing this -- there's barely any mention of the Moon at all. In fact, the Moon appears in the campaign's end credits more than it appears in the game itself.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon is a big lie.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 [reviewed])
Developer: High Moon Studios
Publisher: Activision
Released: June 14, 2011
MSRP: $59.99

After the success of Transformers: War for Cybertron last year, it would appear that High Moon Studios has become the go-to developer for Transformers games, and with good reason. War for Cybertron was a great game with a fun campaign and excellent multiplayer. It's hardly surprising that with this interactive accompaniment to Michael Bay's latest travesty, High Moon sought to change very little about its last effort.

Unfortunately, simply copying War for Cybertron's gameplay doesn't automatically make for a great game, especially when it's clear to even a dullard that it was quickly squirted out in order to release alongside the film. That's very much the feeling Dark of the Moon gives me -- a very rushed, less spectacular War for Cybertron

What this means is that Dark of the Moon is easily the best game based on the "Bayformers" license to be made, despite not being great in the least.

The campaign is playable and pleasantly painless, yet you'll be lucky if you feel anything more than boredom while trudging through it. One major problem is that the game presents itself a cover shooter, but there's no actual cover system and the levels often consist of wide, open areas or constricted corridors with very little to stand behind. Most combat situations are fairly straightforward, based upon the "throwing a bunch of enemies at you and pretending that's a challenge" school of design, and level design overall feels bland, grey and flat.

Each level is dedicated to a different Transformer. You'll start the game as Bumblebee, progress as Ironhide, and get stealthy with Mirage. You'll then switch to the Decepticon side to play Soundwave, Starscream and Megatron, before ending with Optimus Prime. All told, the campaign takes a handful of hours to beat and feature a range of fairly straightforward, mundane levels with a fair few frustrating sections. The Starscream and Mirage stages are particularly tiresome, respectively based as they are around dodgy flight mechanics and sluggish stealth gameplay.

Every Transformer has access to dual weapons and a pair of special abilities in their robot forms, with two further weapons and a unique ability in vehicle form. These are all fairly standard armaments and powers -- assault rifles and plasma cannons are augmented by shockwave blasts, cloaking devices and special guns. One ability recharges on its own while another requires Energon from fallen enemies, and I've just bored myself talking about it. High Moon did a decent job of making each Transformer feel unique, though again, the range of powers and the overall gameplay feels rather dreary compared to Cybertron.

The theme of sub-par War for Cybertron gameplay extends to the multiplayer as well. At its core, the multiplayer offering is almost identical to the one found in High Moon's previous game. There are four character classes designated by vehicle design, though the "Scientist" class has been changed to the "Hunter" class and made worse in the process, oddly. As with War for Cybertron, players get a limited customization ability for characters and can unlock a variety of new abilities and weapons.

The same issues found in the campaign pop up on the multiplayer as well -- namely a mundane level design and the feeling that High Moon quickly pieced it together from bits of its previous title. It's certainly not bad, but it's yet again nowhere near as compelling as what the studio offered in its last Transformers game. The fact that nothing new was added -- and in fact features a more boring range of weapons and maps -- serves to create a multiplayer experience that really has no reason to exist.

Although the game isn't visually ugly, the grey color palette and awful designs of the robots themselves (the movie versions look like computers that were exploded and put back together by horses) make for unpleasant viewing. At the very least, the voices aren't too bad, with several of the voice actors taken from Cybertron rather than the films themselves.

At the end of the day, Transformers: Dark of the Moon is just another licensed game, made a fraction more enjoyable due to its aping of a superior title. Essentially a rushed, less exciting version of War for Cybetron, this quick cash-in is better than most Hollywood money grabs, but that's really not saying too much. Only the most hardcore fans of Michael Bay's Transformers movies need to really bother playing it, and even then, they can probably be doing something more productive with their time.

Crytek: Crysis 2 'backfired' on PC

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 09:20 AM PDT

Crytek: Crysis 2 'backfired' on PC screenshot

Crytek has admitted that the PC version of Crysis 2 may have been a misstep thanks to the focus on console development.

"Crysis 1's intention was, if I were to play it three years later, it looks great. And it does, actually, it fulfilled that. But it made it difficult for entry-level players," Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli told Gamasutra. "So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit."

To make up for what some PC gamers consider the shaft, Crytek will be patching Crysis 2 to support DirectX11 and get all that stuff that justifies their mighty gaming rigs. With this, Crytek is hoping that everybody will be pleased.

"This is much more like a gift to the high-end community," Yerli added. "And I think gamers will appreciate that. It lifts up Crysis 2 and gives a sneak peak of how PC gaming will evolve in the future, if you support a high-end preference.”

Pretty awesome news. I think Crysis 2 looks Godly enough on PC already, but for those that need even more visual glory should hopefully be satisfied.
