Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos is on NHL 12 cover

Tampa Bay Lightning's Steven Stamkos is on NHL 12 cover screenshot

EA Sports announced tonight that Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos will grace the cover of NHL 12, ending the Chicago Blackhawks' two-year reign on the hockey game's box (Patrick Kane was on the NHL 10 box, and Jonathan Toews was on the NHL 11 cover). The Lightning selected Stamkos with the first pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and he has become renowned for his goal-scoring talent (with 51 goals, he shared the 2010 Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for most goals in a season with the Pittsburgh Penguins' Sidney Crosby) and his toughness (the man took a slapshot to the face in Game 7 of the 2011 Eastern Conference Finals, suffering a broken nose, but he quickly returned to the ice).

Stamkos, who has "grown up playing EA Sports NHL videogames," may not be a member of either of this year's Stanley Cup finalists, but the 21-year-old phenom is an exciting young star whose recognition by EA Sports is well-deserved. As the new face of the franchise, he will appear on all retail copies of NHL 12. Look for the game to hit store shelves for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 13, 2011, in North America, and September 9, 2011, in Europe.

Speaking of free Telltale games, you can get the first episode of Monkey Island Tales HD for free on the iPad RIGHT NOW. The offer is good until July 22. Episodes 2 through 5 will be on sale starting tomorrow for $6.99 per episode.

All this free stuff sounds like it'll be more fun than a barrel full of monkeys. On an island.

Game-themed movie 'Your Friends Close' needs to happen

Game-themed movie 'Your Friends Close' needs to happen screenshot

Another day, another videogame related Kickstarter. This one is a little different than you might expect. It's for a movie called Your Friends Close about a married designer couple that is making an MMO that wants players to question their relationship with reality and personality, and how well you can really know another person -- à la the Turing Test.

During a going away party for the two, who are moving to fulfill their dreams, it becomes apparant that one of them may not be going after all. That turns the party into a competition of sorts for the possible open spot, which ends up straining real life relationships and friendships instead -- the things the game was meant to question in the virtual environment.

As Brock Wilbur, the movie's writer, puts it in the video below: "It's a movie about videogames, how much control they really have over us, and the emotional and psychological heartstrings that are pulled by the people behind the scenes every time I pick up a controller. And what happens when they turn that attention on each other in a real life game for much higher stakes."

It sounds like something completely different than the docu Indie Game: The Movie, and one would hope that Your Friends Close could become a mix of a designer couple's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf mixed with some Godard and Wes Anderson influences.

The Criterion buff in me is intrigued.

Live Show: More bad voice-acting in Parasite Eve II

Live Show: More bad voice-acting in Parasite Eve II screenshot

[Backlog is the ongoing quest to rid Conrad Zimmerman's collection of unfinished games. As voted on by the Destructoid community, Conrad plays each game from start to finish live on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel every weeknight at 8pm Pacific]

Parasite Eve II has very little actual voice-acting in it. Someone said, "Freeze!" right at the beginning and I think that's pretty much all there actually is. So, I've been taking it on myself to perform the roles of Aya Brea, Kyle Madigan and everyone else in the game. And, like every bad actor desperate to show what a great performer they are, I'm doing a bit of ad lib when I think it's important to show the depth of my characters.

Kyle is a despicable individual, by the way.

Come join me for Backlog as I continue playing Parasite Eve II in a slow but steady ride to the worst possible ending. I'm hanging out with the goons in the chat for the next couple of hours and it's all going down over on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel. Be there or be doing something else more important to you!

New Black Ops Annihilation trailer makes me want a burger

The next map pack for Call of Duty: Black Ops is set to arrive on June 28 for the Xbox 360. The new DLC will include four new versus maps and a zombie map all for $15. There was a trailer for the new content last week, but everyone on the Internet has short attention spans so here you go again!

Also, that burger guy is so played out now. I do want a burger right now though.

New Destructoid Episode: DLC, DNF, WWJD, GTFO

Hey gang, we've got another episode of The Destructoid Show dedicated to all the hard-hitting post-E3 news from the past couple days. That was a joke.

There's a demo out for Duke Nukem Forever which hopefully has poop and tits in it. You guys should download it and give us some feedback. Call of Duty: Black Ops is still available for purchase or something, the new Fallout: New Vegas DLC "Old World Blues" is about invisible typewriters and rotating your head like an owl. Just kidding, again. Sonic The Hedgehog turns twenty tomorrow, and since he's not old enough to buy beer, Sega's got a bunch of new things to buy and download. I reviewed Jim's review of Shadows Of The Damned, and Tara combated my wickedness by preaching the good word of this Catholic Facebook game, Vatican Wars.

Spoiler Alert: That's it. That's the news. All of it. Go home.

F.E.A.R 3 is bringing the art of videogame manuals BACK!

F.E.A.R 3 is bringing the art of videogame manuals BACK! screenshot

We have an official F.E.A.R 3 review coming soon (I had to buy it at launch because reviewers don't get all their games for free, folks!) but before that gets finished, I just had to share with you the dazzling beauty that is the game's manual.

Manuals are a lost art these days. They used to be beautiful -- almost collectible -- but nobody cares about them anymore. Luckily, Warner Brothers and Day 1 Studios pushed the boat out and brought the romance of the videogame manual back into play. Check out the luxury in the above video.

EDF: Insect Armageddon's mechs look competent enough

Let's hope I'm not being overly optimistic here. Based on this new trailer for Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, the mechs look fairly useful. Huge improvement over the previous game.

Did anyone use the mechs -- or any of the vehicles, for that matter -- more than once in Earth Defense Force 2017? There's nothing quite like having your helicopter explode before you can even lift off. Granted, it is good policy to stay away from objects that can blow up when giant bugs are running amok.

Did you know that a few different independent developers are making Serious Sam titles leading up to the release of Serious Sam 3: BFE? Well, you do now! The Serious Sam Indie Series is a neat move, no question -- especially given who's making the actual games.

The fine folks at Vlambeer are doing Serious Sam: The Random Encounter, which we have new screenshots for. They would make a freakin' Serious Sam role-playing game, wouldn't they? I'm looking forward to trying this one out later on in the summer.

Ms. Splosion Man releasing her goodness on July 13

Twisted Pixel's Ms. Splosion Man is sploding onto Xbox Live Arcade July 13. The sequel to 'Splosion Man will see a ton of new improvements, new environments, 100 levels for single and multiplayer fun, shoes, crazy boss battles and even behind-the-scenes look at how the game was created.

So yeah, all the normal sh*t you would expect in a good sequel will be in the package. I got some hands-on with Ms. Splosion Man back at E3 and loved every second of the game. For you San Diego Comic-Con attendees, be sure to stop by the Ms. Splosion Man booth as the game will be playable. Twisted Pixel's CEO, Michael Wilford will also be offering piggyback rides to fans at SDCC!

Sucker Punch is working on a new PS3 game

Sucker Punch is working on a new PS3 game screenshot

Hot on the heels of the inFAMOUS 2 release is news that its developer, Sucker Punch, is working on a new PS3 title. They've posted a job listing on Gamasutra looking for a senior producer for this unnamed game. This full-time gig is going to be for a big game as they're looking for five years experience, with at least one AAA title under the applicant's belt as a senior producer.

The only information this post gives is that the game will be on PS3. inFAMOUS 3 is the obvious pick. I'm sure that would be good, but Sucker Punch is super-talented, and I'd like to see them try something completely new.

Flashback creator Paul Cuisset tells you about Amy's tech

The more details surface about Amy (or is it AMY?), the more intriguing it becomes. This video sadly only covers some of the technology and graphical features that are being used in Amy, although Paul Cuisset promises us that we'll get more gameplay details next time. And really, who can argue with GOD RAYS?

There's no mention of Xbox Live Arcade or PC on the game's temporary website by the way, so I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for those versions unless it becomes a runaway success.

Gearbox Interview @ Community Day 2011

Gearbox Interview @ Community Day 2011 screenshot

While at Gearbox Community Day last week, I was given the opportunity to interview company president and CEO Randy Pitchford and co-founder/producer Brian Martel. Like a rockstar, Pitchford had a constant swarm of fans hovering around him, but thankfully he was kind enough to give me some time. We talked about the surprisingly large turnout of people who came to party with Gearbox staff at the Palladium Ballroom in Dallas, Texas, and what Pitchford and Martel have in mind for the future.

Also, check out that swank, Gearbox branded LED-lit table in the opening shot.

For more info on the event itself, including new information on Aliens: Colonial Marines and Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, be sure to check out the full write-up posted earlier.

PSN deal: Buy Marvel Pinball, get Zen Pinball free

PSN deal: Buy Marvel Pinball, get Zen Pinball free screenshot

Zen Studios is feeling generous. If you buy Marvel Pinball on the PlayStation Network, you'll get Zen Pinball absolutely free.

Marvel Pinball, which includes four tables -- Iron Man, Spider-Man, Blade, and Wolverine -- will run you $9.99. You'll get an additional eight tables with Zen Pinball with this deal, which makes this what the kids would have called a "totally badical" offer back in 1989.

The latest Marvel Pinball table, Captain America, is out next week for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

PopCap games are 50 percent off on Xbox Live

PopCap games are 50 percent off on Xbox Live screenshot

I'm a total freak for PopCap games. I don't think a week goes by that I don't play at least one of their puzzle titles. I'm sure I have them all, but I should double check as they're all 50 percent off this week on Xbox Live.

That's Plants vs. Zombies ($7.50), Peggle (and Peggle Nights), Bejeweled 2 and more. I'm a huge Zuma fan (200 points, $5). Oh, and more people need to get Bejeweled Blitz Live, which is actually 75 percent off, now at 200 Microsoft Points. The never-ending competitive mode is great. I'll play you!
