| Crysis 2 gets the Decimation Pack on 360 and PC, PS3 soon Posted: 15 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT
Those of you still rocking the multiplayer in Crysis 2 might be interested to know that more content has been pushed out. Or maybe you're looking for an excuse to play again? Be warned, it's gonna cost you. The Decimation Pack brings on five new maps -- 5th Avenue, Chasm, Plaza, Prism, and Apartments -- plus the smoke grenade and FY71 assault rifle to Xbox Live and also PC via in-game means. The content comes in at $10 and should hit PlayStation Network on June 28 in North America. (Europe gets it the next day.) Go ahead, be the weapon. I dare you. Just don't hurt yourself too badly.
| Interview: Getting Furious with the new Brothers in Arms Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:30 PM PDT
There's a new Brothers in Arms game in the works and it's not going to be the same sappy, serious story we're used to. Gearbox isn't done with the main storyline, but in the mean time they're branching off into a new direction with Furious 4. The new four-player co-op game is all about over-the-top craziness with ridiculous weapons and Nazi's with jetpacks! JETPACKS! I spoke with Senior Producer Nouredine Abboud about all the things we can expect in Brothers in Arms: Furious 4.

| Live Show: Parasite Eve II continues on Backlog! Posted: 15 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT [Backlog is the ongoing quest to rid Conrad Zimmerman's collection of unfinished games. As voted on by the Destructoid community, Conrad plays each game from start to finish live on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel every weeknight at 8pm Pacific] Man, I really must not have played much of Parasite Eve II all those years ago when I bought it. I remember absolutely nothing about being in this crappy ghost town in the middle of the Mojave. But now that she's out of the mom jeans and into a pair of hot pants (which the PS3's smoothing has turned into an obscenely short mini-skirt) Aya's ready to gun down mutant scorpions and whatever the hell those horses have turned into. Come and join me as I delve further into this antiquated action-adventure. There will be even more hideous mutations (made all the more ugly by their age) and probably more porno music to come as Backlog continues its playthrough of Parasite Eve II. I'm hanging out right now with the goons in our live chat over on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel! Watch live video from Destructoid on Justin.tv

| Up-close stealth shots of the Wii U console Posted: 15 Jun 2011 02:30 PM PDT Nintendo had super-serious laser beam eyes aimed at anyone that tried to take pictures of the Wii U console. Controller? There's plenty of shots. It's the console that we were all trying to get a better look at. There was one type of person that could evade the laser eyes: Japanese folk. I was introduced to a developer through a friend and he was able to sneak some pretty good Wii U shots. He showed them to me and I wanted them. These shots from Japanese site Inside Games give an even better look. The Wii U machine probably isn't final, but here's a good look at what Nintendo had for E3 anyway. You get a really clear view of the sides and back. As expected, it's very Wii-y. There's vents and some strange tabs on the sides. The shot that my new friend showed me partially obscured what is clearly an HDMI port 'round back. It also features ports that look a lot like the ones on the Wii. I think this system is a bit boring looking. I'm sure Nintendo would say that it's all about the controller. | ||||||||
| Captain America table being added to Marvel Pinball Posted: 15 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT
Zen Studios has announced that it's adding Captain America to its Marvel Pinball roster. The table is inspired by Ed Brubaker's Captain American 65th Anniversary Special, and will have you knocking a silver ball around. You know, pinball. But in all seriousness, I'm psyched about this; the table is looking great. Zen has done a stellar job with its table designs for both Marvel Pinball and its Pinball FX game for Xbox Live Arcade. Can't wait to have Conrad Zimmerman trample my scores on this new one… It's out June 28 for PlayStation Network's Marvel Pinball, and June 29 for Xbox Live Arcade's Pinball FX 2. Now if we could just get Mr. Destructoid on a table... wouldn't that be something?

| New Destructoid Episode: Duke Nukem, Catherine, and Wii U Posted: 15 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT
Hey gang, long time no typing. In the wake of E3, I am suffering from what the experts are referring to as "nerd flu," but which is more likely a hybrid of the T-Virus, Captain Trips, and the Legacy Virus. In spite of Kinect being the most sterile way of playing games (you don't touch anything!) I still managed to become gross. On today's show, I am forced to address the issue that is Duke Nukem Forever's totally abysmal review scores. Then, some screens for H.G. Wells' The War of The Worlds, and the big reveal of who's doing the narration. Details on the pre-order bonuses for Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon. Tara talks about the Wii U, which is a device fills me with a mix of boredom and rage. There's some noise about EA's new PC gaming platform, Origin, which will probably ruffle some feathers. Finally, I decided to embarrass myself with idiotic statements regarding Catherine, which is coming stateside in about six weeks. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to drink Nyquil and watch cartoons because cartoons have anti-oxidants in them. (And by anti-oxidants, I mean Popeye.)
| Skarlet joins the fight in Mortal Kombat next week Posted: 15 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT
The once-mythical Skarlet, borne of a glitch and left in limbo for more than a decade, will be a playable character in Mortal Kombat when she arrives as downloadable content on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade on June 21st. Here's a trailer featuring her backstory and showing off some of her blood-based attacks. I had a chance to play about with Skarlet a bit at E3. She has great air defense working in her favor and manages to feel different enough from the other ladies. You can grab her for $4.99 or 400 MS points when she releases next week alongside a second content pack with a pair of classic character skins for Cyrax and Sektor.
| NinjaBee brings city building to PSN with Akimi Village Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:30 PM PDT
I hadn't heard of Akimi Village prior to today, but it's instantly recognizable. You see, I played (and loved) A Kingdom for Keflings and its follow-up, A World of Keflings. Akimi Village is now available on the PlayStation Network (June 22 in Europe), and at first glance, it appears to essentially be more of the same city building and resource management of the Keflings titles. Minus the Xbox Avatars, of course. Since this is a different audience, sure, why not? This game has a new purification mechanic, so I guess that's something. It's $9.99 -- if it plays anything like the aforementioned titles, it'll be worth considering. And yes, guys, these games are all made by the same people.
| Angry Birds surpasses 250 million downloads Posted: 15 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT Those among us who have decided to hate Angry Birds for arbitrary reasons can enjoy another opportunity to "weep for the industry" today, as Rovio's smash mobile game has surpassed 250 million downloads. The studio is currently working on a new game called Wine and Dine, as well as an egg-themed cookbook. It's also planning to launch Angry Birds Magic, a new platform that can unlock location-based content via any mobile phone. The Rovio train just keeps on riding. Commence your weeping. | Posted: 15 Jun 2011 11:30 AM PDT The Cursed Crusade is an action adventure that falls right into the hack-and-slash genre. Demon's Souls? Not quite, but close in some ways. Think of it as a hack-and-slash with real weight, and with full co-op play. You're not so much slashing as you are swinging. Less cutting and more killing. And you feel it. And it feels good. French developer Kylotonn has done plenty of historical research to put you back in the 12th and 13th centuries in Cursed Crusade, playing as cursed protagonist Denz or his buddy Esteban. As you'd guess from the screens and details, a great deal of the settings and weapons are straight from medeval times. Still, there's a bit of a supernatural edge that gives this game a twist.
Like Demon's Souls, those hacks and slashes have to count in Cursed Crusade. Yes, your sword is massive and powerful, but you can't just go blindly swinging and expect to survive. I found that out the hard way when I first got my hands on the controller. That said, Cursed Crusade isn't as brutal. The combat is really weighty, and correctly time swings and parries are key, but you are allowed to miss, and you're not dying every 10 seconds. The combat system in Cursed Crusade looked and felt good from what I saw. Timed button presses will bring out combos. Well-timed combos will let you perform a finishing move that's usually quite brutal. I saw arms lopped off and heads rolling. Atlus says that these finishing moves are also weapon specific. Beyond the sword there's a mace and a crossbow, and I'm sure there are other weapons of the time to swing around. Being able to parry (right trigger) is key to surviving. Stunning the enemy also helps. Going on the offensive to time attacks so that armor breaks is rewarding when it happens, but you'll be more focused on how to survive when a wave of enemies swarms down on you. The supernatural twist comes with a curse that literally opens up the underworld and gives you power -- that part wasn't in my history books! As the game progresses, the curse powers grow. With this power you'll gain extra abilities in combat, and you'll be able to do cool things like burn your enemies, but it all comes witha price. While in curse mode, your life meter will slowly decrease. Take it too far and you'll die. All of Cursed Crusade can be played cooperatively, either online or via split screen. I didn't get to try co-op out, but I could already see the possibilities. When the action gets hairy playing as the protagonist, your partner Esteban can dig you out of trouble. And there's always the obstacle that requires the strength of two men. The partner becomes key when you're playing as Denz and you die. You won't instantly die; have to work to fight death off until Esteban can come and save you. The Cursed Crusade is still really early (Atlus says alpha), but it already looks great. It looks like it's going to be a big, meaty co-op romp that will provide a stiff challenge and tell a good story at the same time. It's some 30 levels of co-op supernatural fantasy with heavy medeval combat. Do you need more of a pitch than that? Look for The Cursed Crusade this fall on PS3 and Xbox 360.

| A plethora of Ocarina of Time glitches on N64 Posted: 15 Jun 2011 10:40 AM PDT
James Rolfe may best be known as the Angry Video Game Nerd, but he also produces a variety of other content for his website Cinemassacre. One such video series, Mike's Game Glitches, is hosted by his best friend and AVGN collaborator Mike Matei. Mike digs up some crazy and often obscure tricks and glitches in older videogames, then he records himself triggering them in the actual games. With Ocarina of Time 3D around the corner, it seemed an opportune time to game-break the N64 original. Of the bugs he showcases, I was only aware of the infinite Gold Skulltulas trick in the Hyrule Castle grotto. Did you know that you can "swim" on land? Or that you can reflect Ganon's magic using a bottle instead of the sword? I would love to see some of these bug carry over into the remake. They sound incredibly fun! | Electronic Arts planning 'platform exclusives' on Origin Posted: 15 Jun 2011 10:20 AM PDT Following news that Crysis 2 was yanked from Steam, Electronic Arts publisher has confirmed that yet more exclusives are planned for its proprietary digital download service. Ladies and gentlemen, the PC equivalent of the console wars is about to begin, and anyone can play! "We are going to continue to be great partners for our retail channel partners as they evolve their business models to account for digital," said EA's Frank Gibeau. "But at the same time you talk about platform exclusives like Halo or Uncharted, EA's going to have some of our own platform exclusives. "I think long-term you'll see we believe in reach so we will have other digital retailers for out products because we want to reach as many audiences as possible. But at the same time if we can use exclusive content or other ideas to help grow our audience then we're going to do that because we're growing a platform." Terrific. I can't wait until every publisher has its own unique download service that we have to sign up for. Why stop there, though? Why not have every game carry its own subscription? Why don't we just sign our personal details over to every developer on Earth and carry 100,000 passwords in a huge ledger in order to play some videogames? Might as f*cking well.

Not only do we have an in-depth discussion about the story, we chat about the new changes to Horde mode, the community response to the open beta, which characters may or may not be getting killed off, and at one point, Cliffy B even decided to ask me a few questions. Also, **** you, Max Scoville. **** you.
| TAKE THAT! Fan-made Phoenix Wright musical has free OST! Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:40 AM PDT
So, how about that Takashi Miike-directed Phoenix Wright film? Excited? Nervous? In the meantime, why not enjoy some catchy show tunes based on everyone's favorite courtroom drama game series? I don't know how we missed this previously, but a gang of fans gathered back in 2007 to begin work on Turnabout Musical, a Broadway-style play that retells the events of the first Ace Attorney game. It has even been sanctioned by Capcom, because Capcom is cool like that! The team's aim is to one day put on a full stage production, but in the meantime, you can download Highlights from Turnabout Musical, a collection of 15 of the play's 30 songs, right over here. It's a fun listen with a large cast of characters (including Matthew Taranto, creator of the awesome Nintendo-themed webcomic Brawl in the Family, as the voice of Phoenix), and it's all FREE! What have you got to lose?
| Bit.Trip SAGA pops and locks on the 3DS Posted: 15 Jun 2011 09:20 AM PDT I was lucky enough to bump into Mike Roush and Alex Neuse of Gaijin Games at E3 while shopping for bananas. I was even luckier to find that they had a work-in-progress build of Bit.Trip SAGA (the 3DS collection of all six critically acclaimed Bit.Trip titles) in their pocket. "F*ck bananas," I told them. "I need to play this thing, like, yesterday." So I played it, and here's what I thought. Bit.Trip SAGA is a relatively straight port of the six Bit.Trip games as they previously appeared on WiiWare. That said, there were a few changes. For one, the two Pong-influenced games in the series (Bit.Trip BEAT and Bit.Trip FLUX) that utilized motion-based "paddle" controls on the Wii, now use the touch-screen controls. It's similar to how Bit.Trip BEAT controls on the iPad and iPhone, but without the risk of your own fingers obscuring the action on screen. The game is displayed on the 3D top screen, while you gently glide your finger or stylus around on the bottom screen. It feels a bit like the rolling ball bits of Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan, but even more fast paced and insane. You can also use the 3DS' circle pad controls if you want, but as anyone who has played Bit.Trip BEAT or Bit.Trip FLUX knows, you're not going to want to be limited by a conventional control scheme when the action gets really crazy. The other game to get major changes in its control scheme is Bit.Trip FATE. Instead of using the Wii pointer to aim, you now guide the aiming reticule on the touch screen. Again, you won't have to risk obscuring your view of the game, as all the action takes place on the top screen in 3D. Speaking of 3D, every game in this collection look great. The relatively flat Bit.Trip VOID now has a subtle pop, like you're peering down at the bizarre dietary habits of some pixel based amoeba. The deep, complex backgrounds in Bit.Trip CORE are even more eye catching (and potentially visually distracting). As for Bit.Trip RUNNER, that game always looks amazing, but with the 3D on, the game's world looks even more alive. The improved visuals aren't just related to the new 3D display. I noticed right away that some of Bit.Trip FATE's character models look more striking. Specifically, they look a lot shinier, like they had some sort of reflective texture applied to them (though it's not certain that these new textures will be in the final build of the game). It sounds like the guys at Gaijin intend to add little fixes and visual flourishes whenever possible, but seeing as they're also working on a Bit.Trip Complete for the Wii, and some unannounced secret projects, they're going to have to keep their priorities straight. For me, getting Bit.Trip on the go will be enough. Every game in the series makes for perfect pick-up and go play (particularly RUNNER and FLUX), and having the option to play the games whenever I want, wherever I want, is a luxury I think I can afford. The 3DS is also the perfect vessel for me to show these games off to the world. It still pains me that so few people have given the Bit.Trip series a try, but with the SAGA in the palm of my hands, it will be easy to hit the streets and spread the Bit.Trip gospel wherever I go. | ||||||||
| Zelda and Robin Williams get sappy in OoT 3D commercial Posted: 15 Jun 2011 08:40 AM PDT
So that big, mysterious film shoot starring Robin Williams' daughter Zelda turned out to be... a commercial for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D. Okay, so I might have set my expectations too high on that one, but whatev. It's not just Zelda taking up screen time, though. Her father is present as well. Rather than crack some kind of offbeat joke the only way Robin Williams knows how, however, he plays it straight as the loving father father spouting off sappy lines about how his kid and the in-game princess are "both pretty magical." All of this is made extra creepy by the fact that Robin is sporting facial hair that makes him look Epic Beard Man, but I'll be damned if that growth isn't the real magic in this video! That's what will air on TV. Below is a second, longer video in which the two detail the origins of her name and then play around with OoT 3D while Robin laughs like a psycho. As if he didn't remind me enough of the Unibomber already! [Thanks to the squads of people who tipped these vids!]
