| New Destructoid Episode: It's our E3 wrap-up, y'all! Posted: 13 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT
To celebrate the - count it! - forty episodes of The Destructoid Show that got released during the week of E3, Max and I are taking a much-needed holiday today. Before you break down sobbing, know that doesn't mean you'll be without a new episode of your favorite video game news program. On today's episode, Max and I give our quick and dirty breakdown of E3. We discuss E3's biggest game, biggest disappointment, biggest sleeper hit, and biggest hardware announcement. In addition, Max and I also discussed our picks for the Best Booth Babes and People I Most Want To Punch In The Face bonus categories. Soak it in, people. This is video game journalism at its finest.
| Sir Patrick Stewart to narrate The War of the Worlds Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:30 PM PDT In our first look at Other Ocean Interactive's PlayStation Network- and Xbox Live Arcade-bound The War of the Worlds, Max teased that we'd be in for a treat when it came to the game's narrator. He wasn't lying! It's none other than Sir Patrick Stewart, which you knew as of about ten seconds ago when you read the headline. "As a young boy, I remember watching the The War of the Worlds so many times I was quoting the lines," says Stewart. "The alien invasion both terrified and fascinated me and the movie has stuck with me since then. Now, being part of this project will provide a new way for gamers around the world to experience a fresh new take on a classic." As a bonus, Other Ocean has thrown in screenshots with this announcement. Take a look. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Live Show: Backlog begins Parasite Eve II! Posted: 13 Jun 2011 03:00 PM PDT [Backlog is the ongoing quest to rid Conrad Zimmerman's collection of unfinished games. As voted on by the Destructoid community, Conrad plays each game from start to finish live on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel every weeknight at 8pm Pacific] Technically voted in as the winner for our previous series of Backlog, I wound up skipping over Parasite Eve II due to some hardware issues that I didn't fully understand with the promise that we would play it just as soon as possible. It's now possible and tonight we're going to dive right in to the second adventure for the lovely Aya Brea as she fights an enemy which lurks inside us all. Come join me for some mutated creatures, immolating people and one very unnecessary shower scene. I'm hanging out with the goons in the live chat and shooting things in the face right now, so come and join us for a relaxed evening of conversation and gameplay. It's all happening right now over on Destructoid's Justin.tv channel.

| New trailer and screens for EDF: Insect Armageddon Posted: 13 Jun 2011 02:00 PM PDT
We received some assets from D3 Publisher tonight for Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon, which is coming in less than a month. Marvel at gigantic bugs and guys in ridiculous suits fighting them. July is going to be awesome. Making a sequel to a product which has achieved a cult status has to be so difficult, though. Take The Rocky Horror Picture Show as an example. When it comes to being a rock musical and a subversive social commentary, the follow-up Shock Treatment outclasses. But in putting the central freaks into suits instead of corsets it took some of the identity away. In the case of Barry Humphries, maybe we should count our blessings. God, I hope there's somebody out there who knows what the hell I'm talking about here because it sure as hell isn't me.
| E3: Kinect makes Max Scoville look ridiculous, giant Posted: 13 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT If you paid attention to Microsoft's press conference at this year's E3, then it should come as no surprise that Kinect games are dominating the Xbox this year. While this may seem like good news for those of you who don't mind incorporating a little fitness into your video game routine, there is that nagging thought lying in the recesses of our brains: just how ridiculous does Kinect make us look? Never being one to turn down the prospect of actual scientific research, Max Scoville took his curiosity to the streets. And by streets, I mean those little carpeted walkways they have around the convention center. His objective? To find out which Kinect game makes you look the most ridiculous. Watch the video to find out which game won! And if you'd like to nominate Max Scoville for the Excellence in Video Game Journalism and Assclownery award, you may request to do so in the comments. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| E3: Max and Tara play Fruit Ninja Kinect, idiocy ensues Posted: 13 Jun 2011 01:00 PM PDT I bet you thought our E3 videos were over, didn't ya? Well, guess again! Max and I are back with one of our last demoes to come out of E3, and believe me, our exhaustion shows. Then again, that could just be from playing Fruit Ninja Kinect. Waving your arms around like an idiot is a surprisingly fun workout! Just ask Hamza, who got some hands on time with the game as well. Expect Fruit Ninja for Kinect to hit XBLA later this summer as part of Xbox's Summer of Arcade promotion. Until then, I guess you'll just have to act like an idiot the old-fashioned way: Ask out a pretty girl, begin sobbing uncontrollably, throw up on her shoes, and then run to the bathroom before she has a chance to say no. Works every time. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Tara Long and I became gods for one shining moment Posted: 13 Jun 2011 12:30 PM PDT
And then a tsunami came and killed our villagers. A whole seven days of work down the drain. Back to the drawing board, I suppose. Such is the nature of From Dust. Here's a video of Tara and I, talking about our impressions of this new god game which feels a lot like some old ones in as far as my skills in all of these are awful. Seriously, I could not manage to wrap my head around water displacement and just kept fumbling around like a blind idiot for ten minutes while the designer smugly looked at me. I hear he offered Tara actual, concrete advice. I'm not saying there was some sort of gender inequality at play which might have led to him allowing me to look stupid while she received instruction. But, damn it, I'm pretty too!
| Dead Rising 2: Off the Record set at $40 Posted: 13 Jun 2011 12:00 PM PDT I found Dead Rising 2 to be enough Dead Rising for a while to come, but there are plenty of you craving more of the series' particular brand of zombie mayhem. Nick has told us about Dead Rising 2: Off the Record a few times now, and if you were waiting on the price tag, then here you are. The game is going to be $39.99 in North America at launch, reveals executive producer Jason Leigh in a chat with Eurogamer. Realistically, this is what it needed to be, and it's nice to see Capcom didn't try to get away with anything more. (That said, $29.99 would've been oh so sweet.) Who's in at this price? | Build a Winnitron in your city today! Posted: 13 Jun 2011 11:30 AM PDT
This is the trailer for the Winnitron Indie Arcade Network that should have been made months ago. Sure, we've seen some really cool videos about amazing games that are playable on the cabinet and the work that director Kert Gartner has done on them has been excellent. But every time one of these promotional videos hits, I hear the same response: "Who cares about a game I'm never going to get to play?" You can play them. You just have to build a Winnitron in your area to do it with. There are machines popping up all over the world and all it takes to make one of your own is a little bit of money, research and patience. Hell, I bet there's probably an arcade graveyard a bit like this one somewhere in your area that already has an empty cabinet you could buy on the cheap and the hardware to run these games won't cost you an arm and a leg to put together. Don't want to go it alone? Talk to your local bar or arcade. Hell, talk to the guy who runs the pizza place down the block from you. Speaking from experience, you'd be amazed what those folks will consent to doing if you just ask. And being one of maybe a few dozen places in the world people can check out a game is a pretty neat thing for any business-owner.

| Microsoft says PSN hack is 'bad for the industry' Posted: 13 Jun 2011 10:40 AM PDT After many weeks of controversy, Sony's arch rival Microsoft has finally spoken out about the PlayStation Network hack, and it decided against any smug or preening responses. In fact, the company suggested that the situation had a negative effect on the games making business. "We don't view it as a good thing for our industry," said COO Dennis Durkin. "When we think about the future of the industry, with regards to privacy, security, digital rights -- all the things that are really important for consumers to feel like they trust the systems they're using. "Something we've felt was always very important for Xbox Live; we're invested in people's privacy and their security and making sure that we work to keep it a cheat-free and hack-free environment. That's something we've always been about. It's something we take very seriously. It continues to be a very big priority for us." Durkin added that his company wants nobody to deal with the situation Sony's dealt with, and advised that consumers need to always remain careful with their personal data and use multiple passwords. As sites appear to be getting hacked left and right, this advice couldn't be more pertinent. Microsoft: PSN hack is bad for the games industry [OXM, thanks Alex] | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Gneiss! Rock of Ages gets a firm August release date Posted: 13 Jun 2011 10:20 AM PDT Xbox Live Arcade is building up to what's likely to be a hit-after-hit drain on many of our bank accounts. We've got Double Fine's Trenched coming a week from Wednesday, then this year's packed Summer of Arcade line-up shortly after. Then, get this, ACE Team's new game is releasing next. Finally! Yes, I'm referring to the one with boulders in it. Joystiq has pinned Rock of Ages as releasing on August 31, which seems fairly far off at this point, but we'll have plenty to keep up busy in the days leading up to it. When it comes to a concept as fresh as Rock of Ages, I'm happy to wait until it's ready. Rock of Ages granite release on Aug. 31 [Joystiq] | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Lance Henriksen to star in Aliens: Colonial Marines Posted: 13 Jun 2011 10:00 AM PDT Lance Henriksen is confirmed to appear in Aliens: Colonial Marines, just as he did in SEGA's last Xenomorph-flavored romp, Aliens vs. Predator. He will be playing Rook, a Weyland-Yutani synthetic identical to the similarly-Chess-named Bishop from the Aliens movie. Sounds good to me! Make sure you check out Aliens: Colonial Marines first look while you're at it. Game's looking hot. Lance Henriksen to Feature in ACM [AVP Galaxy] | ||||||||||||||||||||
| New releases: Duke Nukem Forever, Alice: Madness Returns Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:40 AM PDT
Due to E3 last week, we never covered the new releases because everyone is focused on all the new stuff coming out later in the year. Yeah, it's such a great idea to release ANYTHING during the CRAZIEST time of the week. So while I didn't list everything from last week, I did at least touch on the two big ones: Red Faction: Armageddon and inFamous 2. A review for Sucker Punch's latest will be here tomorrow. As for this week, Duke Nukem Forever and Alice: Madness Returns are the biggies. Skip Duke Nukem Forever. It sucks. Don't you dare skip Alice: Madness Returns. That's going to be a good one. What's looking sw33t to all of you? X360: Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Wipeout in the Zone, Child of Eden, Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, Operation Flashpoint: Red River - Valley of Death, Red Faction: Armageddon, Duke Nukem Forever, Alice: Madness Returns 3DS: Transformers: Dark of the Moon Wii: Wii Play: Motion

| Sonic Generations and Jim Sterling both have physics Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:20 AM PDT
Last week, Jim Sterling showed you the amazing events that occurred at Sonic's 20th birthday party. There are a couple of things that Jim didn't show you, though. One was that Sonic Generations was at the party. I played it, and I can tell you that the game does indeed have a pretty good physics engine. Sonic 4-physics haters need not be concerned. The other thing is that Jim Sterling has a unique physics formula all his own. As it turns out, Sonic's 20th birthday party + Jim Sterling + an apple = something magical. I can't explain exactly how it all works, but I can speak to the effects of the formula, and it's undeniable potency. My stomach still hurts from the events that transpired that night. If you're ever feeling sad and blue, just invite Jim Sterling over to your house and give him an apple, and you won't be sad for long. You may need to also add unspecified amounts of some blue drink to the equation, though that part of the science is yet to be determined.
| XBLA this week: Adventures of Shuggy and Magic 2012 Posted: 13 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT I know, I know -- Adventures of Shuggy has an off-putting name. But, it's worth a look. Really, it is! This game is a solid platformer that revolves around single-room levels, many of which have different mechanics. One involves room tilting, while another takes a page from P.B. Winterbottom. Variety is something platformers easily -- and often will -- botch. Adventures of Shuggy is $10, and if nothing else, give the demo a play when it hits Xbox Live this Wednesday. And then there is Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012, which I don't need to sell you on. If you are legitimately into MTG, your mind is already set. Just know that this one will set you back by $10 when it also goes live on Wednesday. Coming this week on Xbox LIVE Arcade [Major Nelson] | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Homefront developer Kaos closed by THQ Posted: 13 Jun 2011 08:40 AM PDT THQ has announced that Kaos, the developer behind Homefront, has been shut down. It's deemed likely that THQ will offer employees a chance to relocate to Canada. Quite a move considering the fact that Kaos is based in New York. The publisher has also closed down its Digital Warrington studio following the completion of its first full game, Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team. Well, that sucks. THQ to axe Homefront studio Kaos [Develop] |
