E3: GamersGate announces ad-supported FreeGames service

E3: GamersGate announces ad-supported FreeGames service screenshot

GamersGate is launching FreeGames, an ad-supported platform for both PC and Mac. It's set to launch in 84 days, according to a countdown timer on their website.

How will it work? Every user will be able to have "up to five games available for free on their account at any time with the capability to add additional games." What does that even mean? How do you have only up to five games and then add more than... actually screw it. It's probably something about paying extra, and you're not reading this because you want to pay extra.

You'll see an ad when you launch the free game. The revenue of those ads goes to publishers, who can use the service to target a very specific audience. In return, you play a game for free. No word on what games will be free, or if it will be the entire library. A beta for FreeGames will open in mid June, so more details will likely follow soon.

Free games! Any takers, or will you wait and see what's on offer before jumping on board?

E3: Ubisoft announces Killer Freaks From Outer Space

E3: Ubisoft announces Killer Freaks From Outer Space screenshot

At Nintendo's developer roundtable this evening, Ubisoft announced a new game for Wii U by the name of Killer Freaks From Outer Space, currently scheduled for 2012. I know what you're thinking based on the name, but it actually seems potentially cool, at least in terms of subject matter.

Earth has been invaded by flesh-eating freaks, so it's up to you to stop them, obviously. Nick was at the event, and described Killer Freaks as looking dark visually but having a silly vibe -- like a PG-13 horror movie that almost goes too far.

Since it is the Wii U, the gyroscope and accelerometer in the new controller are used. So, your on-screen gun responds to controller movement, etc. Check out the official website for the first screenshots and a teaser trailer. Consider me pleasantly surprised.

E3: Assassin's Creed for Wii U in development

Tonight at a roundtable, developer Ubisoft confirmed that an Assassin's Creed game for Wii U is in the works.

From the sounds of things, the title is way early in development, with only some concepts being kicked around. Uses for the controller's screen could include a persistent on-screen map, an interactive database, fast weapon selection, alternate reality puzzles, and Eagle Vision/Sense on the touch screen.

In terms of visuals, Ubisoft says it can leverage the Wii U's power to fully utilize their current Assassin's Creed Anvil Engine. This means full support for its graphic shaders system, as well as all of the assets they currently use for the franchise.

Being so early in development, they're not ready to give any more details on the project, including whether it will be a new title or a port of an existing entry into the franchise. As we get closer to the Wii U's 2012 release, however, I'm sure we'll hear more.

E3: Wii U scraps Friend Codes for username & friends list

E3: Wii U scraps Friend Codes for username & friends list screenshot

It's about damn time, no?

As far as many folks are concerned, online multiplayer gaming might as well not exist on the Wii, since its needlessly convoluted Friend Code system -- designed with the intent to keep kids safe from the perils of Internet denizens -- makes life so much more difficult than the username-based setup on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Apparently, Nintendo has heard the hardcore's cries, and for the Wii U, is replacing Friend Codes with system that supports one specific username for each person, instead of a sixteen-digit numeric sequence for each console and a separate twelve-digit number for each game.

The news comes from a demo of the Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online that Ubisoft gave to MTV Multiplayer, who pressed producer Adrian Blunt for multiplayer details. "Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account," he explained, saying that the system is "exactly" equivalent to, say, Gamertags on Xbox Live. Blunt also said that the Wii U offers "a much easier way" to connect players than Friend Codes. But he didn't confirm whether the Wii U also features a console-wide system resembling Achievements/Trophies, saying, "I... can't answer that at the moment."

I'll take that for now, though. The Wii U's online infrastructure remains a major question mark standing in the way of the console's adoption among core gamers, so this is certainly very encouraging news.

E3: Driver: San Francisco trailer depicts driving in SF

E3: Driver: San Francisco trailer depicts driving in SF screenshot

Driver: San Francisco slipped quite a bit since it's initial Q4 2010 release date, but here's a trailer to see how it has come along since then. Not much has changed on the gameplay front. You still drive a car, use the "SHIFT" mechanic to move from car to car using your projected consciousness, and drive around some more!

Nine online modes will cover most of the multiplayer, and the city itself will be dotted with 20 races and 80 "dares" to do some more racing outside of the storyline. You can also record your stunts and chases with a Director replay mode, and then edit and share your movies.

The game will hit PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Mac on August 30, 2011.

E3: Telltale's Jurassic Park is shaping up nicely

Clever girl.

Yeah, there was no context for that, but how can you mention Jurassic Park and not mention that incredible line?

Being a giant fan of the original 1993 movie and an even bigger fan of Telltale Games, I have been looking forward to Jurassic Park for a long time. And while we have already given you some nice previews of how the game is coming along, I just got a chance to sit down with Telltale and see a new section of the game that has not been seen before.

The scene features one of the main characters exploring "Nedry's clearing," the same location from the movie that finds Dennis Nedry's character dropping the infamous shaving cream can after being attacked by a pack of dilophosauruses. Like the rest of the game, this scene balances a nice dose of puzzle solving and action scenes, all with a very Heavy Rain-like interface. Impressive, scary stuff!

So, yeah, Jurassic Park is looking good! It comes out this fall (no exact release date yet).

E3: Michael J. Fox to play two characters in last BttF ep

It was recently confirmed that Michael J. Fox would be lending his voice to a character in the final installment of Telltale's stellar Back to the Future episodic series.

After a meeting with them today, the talented company confirmed to me that he would actually be lending the voice to two characters. The first will be Willy McFly, a descendant of the McFly clan that was actually featured as a baby in Back to the Future Part III the movie. I thought that was pretty cool.

The second character, at this point, is a mystery. Any guesses?

Back to the Future - Episode 5 will be released on June 23rd.

E3: More details on Brothers in Arms: Furious 4

E3: More details on Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 screenshot

One of the bigger surprises this E3 is the new Tarantino take on the beloved Brothers in Arms franchse. Why did Gearbox break with the realistic tactical shooter format we loved? Apparently, it's in order to take "a new approach to the World War II setting by bringing an even more intense and action-oriented experience to franchise fans and shooters-enthusiasts alike."

Translation: "Because we thought it would make for an awesome four-player co-op game." Or perhaps the last BiA title just didn't sell that well. The WWII genre did grow stale years ago, but I'm sure there are also plenty of marketing reasons behind calling this a Brothers in Arms game when it doesn't look like one at all.

Furious 4 will let you select a "fighting style," and players will be able to increase the power of the characters' weapons and abilities by unlocking things like challenges, ranks, and other awards through a "Player Growth" system. Before you start thinking that it will be a multiplayer-only game, there will be a campaign mode although it's co-op oriented.

Multiplayer details are yet to be announced, but there will be at least 6 different modes for up to 10 players. Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 will hit in the first half of 2012 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

E3: Reasons why I love attending E3

E3: Reasons why I love attending E3 screenshot

I know I bitch about a lot of things. You become kind of jaded after awhile, even with a job as great as mine, working for a boss that's as amazing as mine. But I snap back to reality really quickly often and remember that I'm very, very lucky to do what I do for a living. I know I'm very, very lucky to have you to write for, dearest Destructoid reader.

One of the highlights of my job is attending videogame industry events. E3 is the biggest in our industry, and while I bitch about the late hours, stinky people and never being able to sleep, I love it. I love E3.

I've put together a little list of things our staff has seen this week that remind us all why we love E3 so much. We're not bragging. We're just expressing our joy.

  • Someone gave me fudge ice cream sandwiches yesterday <3
  • Randomly seeing Japan's Hard Gay on a massive screen at EA's booth
  • Saint's Row 3 carwash with bikini girls
  • Pure stupid fun games like Rayman, Saint's Row 3, Brother in Arms: Furious 4
  • Booth Bros
  • Pretty, pretty, pretty PR girls!
  • Seeing the new toys first, like PlayStation Vita and Wii U
  • Clueless cosplayers walking around the entryway like this is PAX
  • Guy in yellow spandex with his nuts clearly exposed and outlined
  • Cool swag like the Barbasol Jurassic Park embryo thing
  • Terrible swag like the Deus Ex arm sleeve
  • T-Pain's fake news conference
  • Free beer and food
  • Mr. Caffeine
  • Running into friends
  • Drinking too much
  • A guy taking a shit in the bathroom was whistling the Chocobo Theme earlier today
  • New site called GamingJesus.com

E3: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon takes my breath away

E3: Ace Combat: Assault Horizon takes my breath away screenshot

When it comes to arcade combat flight sim console action with an over-the-top dramatic story, it doesn't get much better than the Ace Combat series. Sure, it's no IL-2 Sturmovik but it's not supposed to be.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon will come with a couple of new online modes including Capital Conquest, which lets you challenge opposing teams to fight for control of famous capitals around the world. Also, Apaches!

I do hope that the close combat zoomed-in action mechanic won't drown out the regular combat from the past games. Contrary to Hamza, who loved the new mechanic, I'm perfectly fine with shooting some AIM-120s from a couple of miles away.

If the new "Close Range Assault" feature won't be overused in the actual game, but instead adds arcade action to replace the usual close combat chaos that ensues when you run out of Sidewinders, I'm going to be all over this game. Hell, at least it will drown out memories of H.A.W.X. 2.

E3: Far Cry 3 demo footage with developer commentary

E3: Far Cry 3 demo footage with developer commentary screenshot

Here is the Far Cry 3 footage that Ubisoft showed earlier at their press conference, but this time with some commentary here and there on what we're looking at.

There's a lot of different types of action going on, with the ability to stealth-kill and drag bodies into cover, Rambo-ing into action and actually surviving, tons of scripted events, and shooting a pistol out of a helicopter.

I'm terrible at Far Cry games, mostly because I tend to quit whenever I get shot through the brush from a mile away, but it does looks pretty good.

E3: Half of Soulcalibur V's roster to be new fighters

Posted: 08 Jun 2011 12:05 PM PDT

E3: Half of Soulcalibur V's roster to be new fighters screenshot

When Project Soul ships Soulcalibur 5 next year, it will feature between 20 and 30 fighters. Over half of them, I was told, will be entirely new warriors.

In the behind-closed-doors demo I saw at E3 this week, we were shown an extremely early version of the upcoming fighter. Only 15% into development, it was only a small taste of what to expect. Running on an entirely new engine, Soulcalibur 5 is faster than its predecessors, addressing concerns that previous games in the series weren't brisk enough for competitive fighting.

Project Soul wasn't ready to talk too many details about any new fighting systems, but we did spot a "special" gauge in the top corner of the screen. This new addition we're told is kind of like the "Critical Edge" system from Soul Edge. This is an indication, we're told, that the team hopes to tap into the essence of and the best of some of the older titles in the series.

Regarding the roster, outside of the note that more than half the fighters would be fresh, they're not ready to announce them just yet. We saw four in action -- old faces Mitsurugi and Siegfried, as well as newcomers Patroklos and Pyrrha. Details on who else will be included will be revealed in the coming months. Whether the game will get console-exclusive fighters (Soulcalibur 4 for Xbox 360 featured Yoda, the PlayStation 3 got Darth Vader) is still up in the air, but the shifty glances and roundabout answers I got when I asked indicate there's something in the works.

Soulcalibur V
is out next year.

E3: A couple more details on the BioShock title for Vita

E3: A couple more details on the BioShock title for Vita screenshot

During the Sony conference, Irrational Games' Ken Levine briefly spoke about the company's first PlayStation Vita title. He said it will be set in the BioShock universe, which certainly got my attention. Ready for more specifics?

"It's a core game" that isn't a downscaled BioShock Infinite or some manner of BioShock port, Levine tells IGN. "It's a different project. It's its own thing being built from the ground up. That is going to be strange and surprising to people."

"I think we always want to surprise people. If I'm just saying 'here's BioShock 1 on Vita,' that's something we could potentially do, but you don't need us to do that. Somebody can make that happen."

E3: The Force is strong with this Star Trek trailer

E3: The Force is strong with this Star Trek trailer screenshot

This trailer is pretty good. Spocktacular, even. But it's also a trailer for a game tie-in for the Star Trek reboot movies. And the last time we saw a big-budget licensed title like this, it was Ubisoft's Avatar game.

Digital Extremes (The Darkness II, Unreal Tournament, Homefront PC) is working on it, which should instill at least some confidence in the game. If that's not enough, the story is penned by Marianne Krawczyk (God of War) in collaboration with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Damon Lindelof is also on board for development support, which probably means every chapter will have a cliffhanger.

Whether this Star Trek game will be another Avatar (meh), The Golden Compass (fffffuuu get it away from me), Kung Fu Panda (not bad at all), or a Transformers: War for Cybertron (aww yeah!), we'll find out in 2012. Probably right before the next movie.

I'm just going to be cautiously optimistic that it will turn out half-decent and successful, just so we may one day get a Star Trek strategy game where your ship's health is measured in Red Shirts. That, or Romulan Tower Defense: Red Shirt Kamikaze.

E3: Iwata and Sakurai talk about the new Smash Bros.

E3: Iwata and Sakurai talk about the new Smash Bros. screenshot

One of the bombshells of Nintendo's E3 press conference was the word that Nintendo is working on Smash Bros. titles for both the 3DS and the Wii U. Sadly, that was all the information that we got, and it's likely all the info we will get for a while.

In the meantime, we can chew on this interview between Nintendo President Iwata-san and Smash Bros. creator Sakurai-san. It sounds like everything is in the planning stages at this point, but one thing is for sure, it sounds like Sakurai-san thinks it would be "wrong" to make a new Smash Bros. game that only adds improved graphics and a larger roster to the formula.

Some new ideas, like a more "individual" focused experience on the 3DS version where you may be able to customize your character, that would generally be "slightly different" from the "conventional" Smash Bros. games, are floated out there, while connectivity between the two versions is pretty much a lock.

Iwata asks about Smash Bros. [andriasang.com]

Other major topics that were discussed:

  • Iwata-san first approached Sakurai-san about creating a new Smash Bros. for the 3DS shortly after work on Super Smash Bros. Brawl was completed.
  • Smash Bros. Brawl was balanced by Sakurai. The upcoming Smash Bros. title will be balanced by a larger component of the development team.
  • There will be a continued focus on making a game that experienced players and new players can enjoy together.
  • The console experience is planned to be more "public" while the home console version will be more "personal."
  • An experience point system is being discussed.
