E3: PixelJunk SideScroller revealed

E3: PixelJunk SideScroller revealed screenshot

Curiously absent from Sony's press conference earlier today was the announcement of a new title in Q Games' PixelJunk series. Such a thing does exist and expands the franchise into yet another classic genre of videogames, the sides-scrolling shooter. Players will be able to collect power-ups and add upgrades to their ship to give an edge against enemies.

No release date has been given for PixelJunk SideScroller.

I keep buying PixelJunk games and then not playing them to any significant degree, which is why I skipped on both Shooter titles. It's not that I don't think the games are good and the aesthetic certainly tickles my retro fancy. I just can't get into them for some reason and this looks like an extension of the games in the franchise that I haven't bought.

Sideshow Collectibles' Lara Croft open for pre-order

[As originally posted on Tomopop]

Well, by now, you've probably already heard and seen all about the new Tomb Raider game coming out, so perhaps we can interest you in a statue to match? Sideshow Collectibles has a new Lara Croft statue open for pre-order, based on the artwork of renowned illustrator Adam Hughes. Standing 19" tall and weighing in at a mighty 13 pounds, it's a different take on Lara than perhaps we're used to, but the short shorts, the Uzi, the climbing on things ... it's all there.

Lara will be coming fourth quarter 2011 in two versions: a regular US$349.99 version and an exclusive version at the same price. The exclusive version comes with an exclusive art print. Both will require a deposit of US$35 within 48 hours of pre-ordering and have the FlexPay plan as an option. I'm probably not lining up to get her, but what about you guys?

E3: Oddworld games coming to PlayStation Vita

E3: Oddworld games coming to PlayStation Vita screenshot

Developer Just Add Water has announced that they will be bringing ports of two classic Oddworld games to the PlayStation Vita. The series' first two titles, Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus will be arriving on the handheld in time for the holidays and will be taking advantage of Sony's cloud-based storage for game saves.

I'm a huge fan of Oddworld, particularly that scruffy Mudokon Abe, so I'll take this as good news. But the games are pretty widely available at this point, so it's hard to get terribly excited. So long as they don't pull that, "buy this game so we know to make the next one" crap on us, I'll be happy.

Housemarque's Super Stardust Delta wasn't shown off for the first time today, but this trailer for the game is the new hotness if I do say so myself.

If you've ever tried playing a game in this series without twin sticks -- talking about you, Super Stardust Portable -- well, I envy you. It's far from ideal, and all the more reason Delta for PlayStation Vita looks so darn good. Love those eye-popping colors.

E3: NBA 2K12 includes PlayStation Move support

E3: NBA 2K12 includes PlayStation Move support screenshot

Sony has been working hard on getting third-party publishers to support PlayStation Move, and now, they can count 2K Sports among them. The sports publisher trotted out none other than Kobe Bryant at Sony's E3 press conference this evening to help demonstrate the Move integration that NBA 2K12 will include.

Called "NBA On The Move," the feature allows you to use the Move wand to point an on-screen reticle at a player to whom you want to pass the rock, and by pulling the trigger on the controller, a player will take a shot. On defense, you can target players with the wand, and doing so will switch to them; pressing a shoulder button will attempt to block a shot. It didn't look very intuitive, and while Bryant did a good job of pretending to have a good time, either he didn't know what he was doing, or the functionality just hadn't been implemented that well.

If you have PlayStation Move, you can try out NBA On The Move yourself when NBA 2K12 launches on October 4, 2011.

As the rumors leading up to E3 2011 suggested, Sony decided to side with the PlayStation Vita name for the device previously dubbed NGP. The handheld was a large focus during the company's press conference, and for good reason.

It had a solid showing, with a number of big-name Vita games discussed, and a lovely $249/$299 price point disclosed. In general, the event went rather smoothly, I thought. Next time, boys, be sure to start on time. Think of poor Nick Chester.

Not to be completely overshadowed by the PlayStation Vita (too late!), the PlayStation Portable has some good news today as well.

Namely, sales. Did the headline ruin it? Yeah -- the handheld that's still hanging on there has seen 70 million units sold worldwide as of April 27, 2011. Also, there are 3,200 UMD-based games now in existence. If you could kill a man with UMDs, that'd be enough to do it with!

"SCE will continue to promote the expansion of the PSP platform and offer a variety of interactive digital entertainment along with PlayStation Vita," reads a press release. We'll see about that.

E3: InFAMOUS lead playable in Street Fighter X Tekken

E3: InFAMOUS lead playable in Street Fighter X Tekken screenshot

Not only did Sony and Capcom just announce that Street Fighter X Tekken is coming to the Playstation Vita, but they've also just told us that Cole McGrath from the InFAMOUS series will be appearing in game as a playable fighter. It's incredible to see a very Western character like Cole get a Japanese art direction overhaul. I had very little interest in the character before, but seeing him with these new exaggerated animations and beefy, badass moves has definitely caught my attention.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of another time that a non-Capcom, non-fighting game character has appeared in a Street Fighter related title. Even if you don't care about PS Vita or inFAMOUS, if you're a Street Fighter fan, you should be excited about this. If the game is getting PS Vita specific characters, that opens the door for potential PS3, 360, Project Cafe, and 3DS specific characters as well (assuming the game comes to Project Cafe and the 3DS).

You can bet I'll be hounding Capcom for details on this when I meet with them on Wednesday. in the meantime, lets discuss. Whichs console specific characters would you like to see in each potential version of the game?

Seriously, nothing else needs saying.

E3: Draw tracks with your finger in ModNation Racers NGP

Posted: 06 Jun 2011 01:43 PM PDT

E3: Draw tracks with your finger in ModNation Racers NGP screenshot

With ModNation Racers on the PlayStation 3, Sony introduced an easy way to create, play, and share tracks, karts, and customized racers. With its upcoming NGP version of the title, Sony's San Diego Studio hopes to make it even easier using the portable's front and rear touch screen features.

Creating a track on the original ModNation was pretty straight forward -- you simply "drove" the track in real time, the game doing most of the work to bring it to life. With the NGP, players can now use the system's touch screen to simply drag a finger across an overhead view of an environment, easily drawing a track.

Once drawn, players can let the game auto-populate the environment with ramps, hazards, and various touches, or delve deeper using most (if not all) of the same tools found in the console version. But for those looking to delve deeper, you'll be able to use the touch screen to manipulate splines, banks, and more.

While creating tracks on the console was dummy proof, using the touch screen seemed even easier. I did run into a few issues, much of it likely related to the early developer NGP hardware I was using -- the touch screen  simply wasn't as responsive as I wanted it to be. In more than once instance, I touch or tried to drag a piece of the track and it simply didn't respond as quickly as I wanted it to, if at all. I'm crossing my fingers (and I'm hopeful) that this will be smoothed out before release, because they're definitely onto something with this track creation method.

The game will, of course, feature support for kart and track creation. While the game is being build from the ground up, it looks nearly identical to the console version from top to bottom. Many of the same menus were present, and the improved analog sticks made it feel better in my hands than the PlayStation Portable version of the kart racer.

Most exciting for current ModNation players is the announcement that the custom tracks currently available on the PS3 version of the game (Sony says its over two million) will be available for the NGP version day one. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like tracks created on the NGP will be transferable and playable to the console version, although that could change before the game's release.

E3: Sony confirms PlayStation Vita, $249/299 pricetag

E3: Sony confirms PlayStation Vita, $249/299 pricetag screenshot

In what will come as no surprise to anyone, Sony has renamed the NGP to PlayStation Vita, or PS Vita for short. The specs (which we've included after the jump) for the device seem to be the same, and the only thing that has really changed is the name on the shell. And with that name change comes a highly reasonable price tag of $249 for the WiFi model (the price of the 3DS!) and $299 for the model with both WiFi and 3G. Gamers in Europe will unfortunately be paying a hefty 249 and 299 euros, respectively. The superpowered handheld will release during the 2011 holiday season in all regions.

More interesting is the announcement of the Party system. It allows players to voice chat via headset or built-in microphone in party rooms across any game, similar to Xbox Live's party system. They also reaffirmed the Near system, which is also similar to Xbox Live's friend features.

Finally, those of us in America will have to suffer with AT&T's exclusive service for the new handheld. The telecom giant will have a complete monopoly when it comes to 3G connectivity.

There's some great news here -- an amazing pricetag for Americans that is highly competitive with Nintendo's 3DS and a party system that should have been on PS3 years ago. But Europe is getting the shaft, and there was an audible groan in the conference hall when AT&T's name came up. With 80 titles in development, will you be grabbing one of the models despite AT&T's spotty service, or are memories of the pre-Verizon iPhone too bad?

Resistance 3 is going to have PlayStation Move support, and Sony is pushing that functionality with a special package, the "Doomsday Edition" of the game. It will sell for $149.99, but you'll get a damn good value at that price. Here's the full rundown:

  • a copy of Resistance 3
  • a PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter peripheral
  • a PlayStation Move wand
  • a PlayStation Move Navigation Controller
  • a PlayStation Eye camera

We'll update this post with images once we have them. This bundle will launch in North America on the same day as the standalone game: September 6th. If you don't have PlayStation Move at all, will you be picking it up?

Look at Sony, taking a page straight out of Microsoft's book. A partnership with Electronics Arts means PlayStation 3 owners are getting a few nice exclusives, as discussed today during Sony's press conference.

SSX will have a Mt. Fuji level, which is based on a render of the mountain from NASA satellite data; Need for Speed The Run will come with seven additional super cars; and lastly, Battlefield 3 comes with Battlefield 1943 on the Blu-ray. Again, all of this content is exclusive to the PS3 versions of these titles.

While promising PlayStation Move in BioShock Infinite, designer Ken Levine has also said that his studio will support Sony's next generation portable system. He did not give details of any games, but we know it'll be BioShock-related.

Sure, I'll have that!

Ken Levine has just gotten done making a very impressive U-turn on his previous criticism of motion control in order to open the way for PlayStation Move support in BioShock Infinite. Selling the implementation as a way of opening the game up to new players, Levine has said his team is "only getting [its] head" around the concept.

Levine also said that the first BioShock will be included on the BioShock Infinite Blu-ray. That, to me, is cooler news than Move in Infinite. And I always have two versions of the first BioShock!

E3: Details trickle in on PS3 exclusive Dust 514 screenshot

The upcoming FPS Dust 514 is a weird one. Sony just announced that the title will somehow involve itself with the massively popular PC MMO EVE Online, as well as the Sony's Next Generation Portable.  The PS3 exclusive will get a closed beta on PSN in 2011, with potential launch in Spring of 2012.

The game looks like standard sci-fi fare, about a a mercenary and a shot that might change the world and other such tropes. Other than that, we don't know a lot. If we get some more details, I'll be sure to keep you updated.
