New NES homebrew game Super Bat Puncher appears

New NES homebrew game Super Bat Puncher appears screenshot

This is a run-through of a demo for Super Bat Puncher, an entirely new homebrew game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. A platform game, you have to free the nature spirits guarding a dangerous planet and punch a lot of bats. As you obtain new abilities for yourself and the novelty boxing glove you wield, some very cool gameplay opens up as you'll see in the video.

Super Bat Puncher has been in development for the last year and still has a ways to go. Its developer Morphcat plans to take a break from the project but hopefully he won't sit on his duff for too long. This looks like too much fun to fall by the wayside. You can download the demo and play it with a NES emulator right now from the game's development blog.

Jam on these Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D EX costumes

Jam on these Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D EX costumes screenshot

Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D is out in Japan, and right on schedule, gameplay videos and spoilers are hitting the internet in droves. First up, we have a smattering of what the game's unlockable EX costumes. That looks like Jill representing some Resident Evil 3 pride, Chris's decked out in something like his original S.T.A.R.S. outfit, Rebecca dressed like a maid/nurse/fetish worker, and Krauser dressed like some sort of douche.

This makes me wonder what Barry, Wesker, Hunk, and Claire's alternate outfits will be. Personally, I'm hoping to see Claire decked out like Resident Evil 2's original female protagonist Elza Walker, Hunk dressed as a big block of Tofu, Wesker in a sexy red dress, and Barry with a ugly leather jacket and a Titanic-era Leonardo DiCaprio hair cut.

Then everyone would be happy.

Live Show: Ratchet & Clank continues on Backlog! screenshot

When last we left our heroes, General Azimuth was setting into motion his plan to use the Great Clock to save the Lombax race, Clank continued his training in the proper maintenance of time itself (while encouraging the use of the Great Clock to save his creator, the Zoni Orvus) and Quark once again managed to get himself captured. It's just another day in the Ratchet & Clank universe.

Come and join me as we dive back in to Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time right now on Backlog. We're blasting baddies and laughing at delightful (and family friendly) humor. Will Mass Effect 3 use Kinect on Xbox 360?

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 02:30 PM PDT

Will Mass Effect 3 use Kinect on Xbox 360? screenshot

The all-seeing eye of the internet happened to catch the above image of Mass Effect 3 box art for the Xbox 360 from Electronic Arts' online store. The image, which shows the Kinect Sensor compatibility bar found on all games with Microsoft's motion control system as a feature, was quickly removed from its page, though the original file is still on their servers as of the time of this writing.

We'll no doubt hear all about this at E3 next week, but I'm curious to know how you think Kinect could be implemented in Mass Effect. Will it just be a throwaway mini-game exercise or do you think BioWare is capable of bringing some deeper application of the tech?

Rumour: Mass Effect 3 Kinect-compatible? [NeoGAF]

New Destructoid Episode: War of the Colonial Vita Marines

New Destructoid Episode: War of the Colonial Vita Marines screenshot

Evening, 'toiders! Time for another episode of that pesky video game show you've all grown to hate but watch anyway on the off chance one of us accidentally farts on camera. I can't wait for that day.

In the meantime, I learned two things from today's episode: One, plaid is terribly unflattering on camera. And two, Max really hates the name Vita. I mean, I think it's dumb, too, but like every other name for a video game console in history, I think we'll get used to it.

Other notable news of the day includes the big reveal of Catwoman as a playable character in Batman: Arkham City, the announcement of a Spring 2012 release date for Aliens: Colonial Marines, and the untimely demise of certain Android emulators. Also, if you haven't read Max's preview for The War of the Worlds yet, go do it. (He paid me to tell you that.)

The calendar is on sale for $17.99 and all the proceeds go to the Japanese Red Cross. This is pretty much a win/win for everyone. You're donating to Japanese relief efforts AND getting to look at gorgeous women on a monthly basis!

Bubble Bobble on drugs: Deepak Fights Robots

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Bubble Bobble on drugs: Deepak Fights Robots screenshot

The new game from RunMan: Race Around the World co-creator Tom Sennett is an arcade-style platformer called Deepak Fights Robots. You need to give it a look, simple as that. Assuming you have access to a PC (Windows or Linux) or a Mac.

In addition to being a talented game designer, he knows a thing or two about making awesome, eye-melting websites and is more skilled with MS Paint than I'll ever dream to be. Deepak Fights Robots is his first venture into paid-indie-game territory; I hope it's a success.

I've played through the game already, so let me give you the highlights.

Deepak Fights Robots is, in my opinion, best described as Bollywood's psychedelics-induced take on Bubble Bobble. What it lacks in pure dancing delight is made up many times over by the inclusion of tigers, groovin' sitar jams, and one seriously manly Indian mustache.

The game is broken up into quite a few short levels, with the common goal always revolving around you grabbing shiny collectibles. (I'm not entirely sure what they're supposed to be.) Something about a robot pimp locking you in the Cave of Robots, so sure, why not? Who cares what they are.

Get 'em all without bumping into any enemies, and you'll go into invincible-superhero mode. You then complete the stage by blasting all of the enemy robots in the most heroic of fashions. Quick, fair, and fun -- like I said, this is an arcade-y game.

Dying merely restarts the level, instantly; I'll add that I never once felt frustrated upon totally blowing it. There are also items to collect for points -- there's a big ol' leaderboard at the end of the game -- and you can also pick up animal pals like the aforementioned tiger to give you an extra hit's worth of life.

The music is amazing. It's by Family Funktion and the Sitar Jams. The soundtrack meshes perfectly with the equally bizarre and charming visuals -- it pushes you to keep playing just one more level. As per usual, Sennett's art doesn't play particularly well in screenshots, but it's always a treat to see in motion. Think Yoshi's Island as recreated in MS Paint on a tight budget.

Deepak Fights Robots isn't terribly long, and $9.95 (even with free lifetime updates) can be a lot to ask of some of the more frugal readers in attendance, but it is fun throughout. That's more than I can say for most games lately, independent or otherwise. I'll take quality over quantity any day.

Also, there are cows that inexplicably wear glasses. Love it.

Preview: Choplifter HD

Preview: Choplifter HD screenshot

You all remember Choplifter? For those of you too young to know any better, Choplifter was a sidescrolling helicopter combat game where you had to defeat the bad guys and save hostages along the way. Well, Choplifter is getting a retro revival thanks to inXile Entertainment. They're bringing that familiar helicopter combat of the past to the HD-loving audience of today for the PC, PlayStation Network and as of today we can announce that it will also be hitting Xbox Live Arcade.

inXile let me play through a couple of levels in Choplifter HD where I killed plenty of terrorists, zombies, chickens and ... Super Meat Boy?!

Choplifter HD (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, PC [Previewed]
Developer: inXile Entertainment
Publisher: inXile Entertainment
To be released: Fall 2011

You'll be in control of various helicopters as you go about saving the day. Levels are all designed in 3D but you'll be flying in a 2D perspective, just like the original game. In the first level I saw, you're in the middle of a war in some foreign, desert-y country and the goal is to destroy the oil pipelines at the end of the map.

There's plenty of armed resistance along the way but your helicopter is armed with a machine gun -- one with unlimited ammo and missiles. The machine gun does overheat after prolonged use and you have a limited amount of missiles at your disposal. You can also boost and utilize your chopper blades to kill anything.

Pressing a button (in this case the Xbox 360 controller's left and right bumpers) will make your helicopter face right, left or straight at the screen. You'll need to switch views when engaging enemies as the machine gun has limited range and so you can target enemies easier with missiles.

On top of your chopper's health meter, you also have a fuel meter to manage, so you have to refuel in order to stay in the air. There are multiple refueling points on any given level and you have to set your chopper on the ground in order to get gas. This leaves you vulnerable, but you can still fire your weapons.

Each level will have a primary objective you need to complete in order to pass, with the secondary goal of saving as many people as possible. Saving someone simply involves you setting your chopper down on the ground smoothly. Really, if you land to hard or fast you will damage your ride. You need to make sure you've cleared the area of danger and be careful not to land on anyone in need of rescuing either as that can kill them. There's a limited amount of room on your ride so you have to make multiple runs back to the starting base in order to drop people off to safety.

Levels won't all be as serious as this desert combat scenario. The next stage I was shown was set in the middle of a zombie outbreak. The goal here is to get military soldiers from checkpoint to checkpoint in order to save others from the zombies. There's obviously no danger from the zombies while you're in the air, but you do have to make multiple landings and the zombie horde will overcome your firepower and attack the chopper. The zombies will even cling onto your ride and you literally have to swing the helicopter from left to right in order to shake the brain eaters off. It's a pretty funny site to behold as you fling the zombies back to the ground.

That's Choplifter HD in a nutshell. It's pretty straightforward and should really please fans of the original game. In fact, fans will be happy to hear that Dan Gorlin, the creator of the Choplifter franchise, is a design consultant on this game.

The visuals were really good and I was especially impressed by the audio design. It was a real blast to play but I definitely hope Choplifter HD also hits the mobile platforms. The levels seem like the perfect length to fill up a boring train ride, for example.

As for Super Meat Boy, inXile has partnered up with a few indie developers and we'll be seeing special cameos from other games. In this case, Meat Boy can be found by actually going past the particular level's parameters. You can rescue him ... or kill him, like I did. It was totally on accident, I swear.

UK to get Ubisoft 3DS bundles

UK to get Ubisoft 3DS bundles screenshot

It's always strange to see a Nintendo system bundled with anything other than a first-party title, but that's exactly what UK gamers can expect for later this year in a 3DS bundle. MCV says that a retailer revealed a bundle that will contain a 3DS, Splinter Cell 3D and upcoming game Driver Renegade. We know that the bundle will come in both blue and black, and will be released on October 1st, but there's no word on pricing yet.

This seems to be a UK thing for now. If this bundle came to the US would you be interested in it?

An overview of L.A. Noire's Rockstar Pass

The Rockstar Pass for L.A. Noire seems like a reasonable enough deal. $10 gets you seven premium downloadable content items, including: four new cases, a collectible challenge, and two outfits.

You pay up front, and get access to the add-ons as they go live on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. Why do that? Because doing so is cheaper -- 50 percent cheaper, to be exact -- than buying the content individually upon release.

The video above offers a glimpse at the goods in question, should you be on the fence.

New Magicka DLC goes to help Glorious Japa- I mean Nippon

New Magicka DLC goes to help Glorious Japa- I mean Nippon screenshot

Did you think the crazy swedes at Arrowhead could top Magicka: Vietnam, the Vietnam-War-themed expansion pack to their fantasy wizard action game Magicka? Well, they haven't yet, but the latest piece of DLC for their quirky little game reflects a similar sense of humor, as well as a spark of charitable spirit.

It's called Magicka: Nippon, and for your $0.99 you'll get some cool Japa- I mean "Nippon"-themed gear for your squishy wizard, including a kimono-style wizard robe and straw wizard hat. You'll also get the armor-piercing "Yawarakai-Te" (lit. "Soft Hand") katana, and a bamboo staff that boosts elemental resistance.

Oh, and Steam buyers also get a "Conjurer's Cowl" hat for your Team Fortress 2 demoman.

50% of all revenue from the sales of the DLC will go to the Japan Relief Support program.

So if you've been too cheap to toss some cash Japa- I mean Nippon's way, this is probably the smallest amount yet seen. C'mon, pick it up already. The hat and kimono will look awesome on your wizard before he gets blown up by friendly fire or torn apart by horrible monsters.

Banelings! StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm trailer

Banelings! StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm trailer screenshot

Blizzard has put out the first gameplay footage of StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm, viewable above.

It's got more Banelings than you'd know what to do with, character upgrades, and the obligatory real-time strategy snow environment. The footage shown here more or less looks like the same formula used for the Terran campaign in StarCraft II, now applied to the Zerg.

I'm up for that style of single-player again.

Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said to The Guardian that Call of Duty: Elite subscribers will have exclusive access to "linear video content" created by "some top Hollywood talent."

Unsure what that means? You're not alone. Unfortunately, Hirshberg also commented "We're not going to give much more detail until we have something to show. That'll be later in the year."

"If you're a sports fan, there are lots of ways for you to connect with that hobby, that passion, not just on the day that the games are played, but throughout the week, and we wanted to give [Call of Duty players] real entertainment value."

E3 Approaches: My (mostly) reasonable E3 2011 wishlist

E3 Approaches: My (mostly) reasonable E3 2011 wishlist screenshot

[As part of the leadup to E3, we're posting Community hopes and predictions about what's going to happen at this year's conference. Check out our call for E3 blogs and post your own response in the C Blogs. -- JRo]

Ah, E3. What else can you say about it, other than it's like Christmas, your birthday, a trip to the candy store, and Jack Thompson's disbarment all wrapped into one glorious week of gaming announcements? Yes, this is the time of year where we get to bear witness to the reveal of some of the best games and announcements, as well as some of the most memorable moments in the industry. It was at E3 where we learned that Solid Snake would make his way into Smash Bros. Brawl. It was at E3 where we learned that the PS3 would cost 599 US Dollars at retail. It was at E3 where we saw the debut of Metroid: Other M and got excited ... and then got disappointed when it was released a year later.

It's around this time when everyone makes starts to speculate about what's gonna be revealed at E3 this year. Or, at least, someone makes a list of things they want to see at E3 and claims it's legit. But us community members of Destructoid are above making a false list of things that will happen at E3. We just make lists of things we WANT to see happen at E3 (there's a difference, shut up). So for what it's worth, I'll join everyone else and throw my penny into the wishing well. I hope I don't throw my lucky penny in there, or I'll be screwed.

THINGS THAT I'D LIKE TO SEE HAPPEN BUT PROBABLY NEVER WILL:

Xenoblade and The Last Story get a North American release date
Yeah, I know that a voice actor confirmed Xenoblade's release in the states and that The Last Story is on the way in Europe, but I want to hear it straight from NoA's mouth. I dunno about the rest of you, but I've taken quite an interest in these games. Plus, aside from the new Zelda game, it's not like we've got anything else on the Wii to look forward to. If nothing else, I'd like to see this stuff get released in the states before Nintendo's next console gets released in 2012. Or, you know, this holiday season. I mean, I'd like to have SOMETHING new to play on the Wii in the next few months.

More details about Kingdom Hearts 3D
I really liked Birth by Sleep on the PSP, but I wasn't too excited with the main characters I was playing as. The fact that I'll once again play as Sora in this game has me excited already. I know a lot of people hate Sora, but I'd rather play as some happy-go-lucky idiot than another dark, brooding, angsty kid that's in every other fucking JRPG. I'm also glad that Square's adding more new Disney Worlds like Notre Dame, but I'd like to know what we'll be exploring this time around. Give me a release date, a Toy Story world, and another Lilo and Stitch world, and you can have my $40 right now.

Viewtiful Joe 3
This just needs to happen, Capcom. You made Okamiden, you made Marvel vs. Capcom 3, you're in the process of making Mega Man Legends 3. You can certainly make Viewtiful Joe 3.

Sony's Marcus permanently falls by the wayside
Last year at E3, Sony's Jack Tretton announced that because Kevin Butler was so popular (to the point where he was actually one of the highlights of the press conference), they decided to run a similar ad campaign for the PSP in the form of Marcus. While I applaud Sony for trying to boost PSP sales with a similar tactic, I think it's safe to say that this campaign did not exactly tickle our funny bones. Now, Marcus hasn't been in a new ad for quite some time as of this writing. With the NGP, or Vita, or whatever the hell Sony decides to name their next handheld, due for release later this year, I'm hoping they took Marcus out behind the toolshed. Hell, if they just had Kevin Butler featured in ads for the PS3 and the new Sony handheld, that would be just perfect. Or even better...

Kevin Butler gets his own video game
Come on. Wouldn't you want to play a game where you could play as Kevin Butler? I certainly would.

Yes please.

A new family-friendly game from Microsoft that DOESN'T involve the Kinect
Yeah, I know the Kinect will help bring in a new audience with it's motion control games. While I've got nothing against making those kinda games for the casual market, I'd like to see some new family-friendly game from Microsoft. Something that Nintendo and Sony both have going for them is that they've got family-friendly franchises like Mario, Zelda, Ratchet and Clank, LittleBigPlanet, and so on. The only ones I can name off the top of my head that Microsoft has are Banjo-Kazooie and Viva Pinata. Don't get me wrong, Viva Pinata was a pretty nice game, but maybe a platformer with a new character would be nice. Of course, this could also happen...

Rare makes Banjo-Kazooie 3

This one is probably never going to happen, given Rare's current direction in game development. I know they made Nuts & Bolts for the 360, but I want to play an actual Banjo-Kazooie game. Rare should just take a good hard look at Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie and remember what made their games fun in the first place. Nice attempt at shaking up the franchise guys, but it just didn't pan out. Then again, there have been worse attempts at shaking up a franchise...

Oh dear god why!?

Nintendo reveals a new "core" AAA IP
Look, we all love our Nintendo franchises, but you have to admit that this is getting a bit redundant. And before anyone says anything, I'm well aware that Nintendo has made some new games in the last few years like Nintendogs, Eternal Ocean, and Hotel Dusk (which is one of my favorite under-appreciated games on the DS, by the way). And yes, I know this wish is redundant, what with my desire of Xenoblade and The Last Story. But really, I want a fresh new game in the Nintendo roster. Maybe you can have Retro Studios make a new IP. They've proven that they make good games, so why not let them make their own? Although, that last sentence might just make this wish go deep into "never-gonna-happen" territory.

System Shock 3 is revealed
Or, at least, System Shock 2 is released on GOG.com or Steam. Hey, I didn't say this wishlist was going to be completely reasonable.

Nintendo stops screwing around with their online strategy
Reggie can just pull up another chart and blab all he wants about how WiiWare is great for publishers and how everyone is perfectly happy with it. It doesn't change the fact that WiiWare is the least popular digital distribution method of this console generation. Between the 40 MB cap on all games published on the thing, their very limited demo releases, and their frustratingly clunky interface, the whole thing just cannot compete with the likes of...well, everyone else. Of course, we'll have to wait another week when Nintendo makes the eShop available on the 3DS to know whether Nintendo truly intends to improve on this front or not. Until then, I'm left hoping that Nintendo finally gets their act together and making their downloadable service more tolerable. Which brings me to...

Earthbound FINALLY gets a release date on the Virtual Console
Of all my unlikely demands, this one is probably the most unlikely. But really, this is THE most popular title of the SNES library that isn't on the Virtual Console yet. Nintendo, you've got no friggin' excuse to not release this thing. Chrono Trigger was just released on there a couple weeks ago. Also, need I remind you how well Chrono Trigger sold on the DS!? If you release this game on the Virtual Console this year, I will take back every nasty comment I ever launched towards you in the past few years, including all the stuff I said about your 2008 presentations. Even the ones about ... her.

Make it happen, Nintendo!

And that's all I can think of, at the moment. I'll probably come up with other stuff I'd like to see at E3 this year. In that case, I'll most likely create another blog entry with even more reasonable-ish wishes for E3. Either that, or I'll write a blog about how me not being born in the 80s affected my video game nostalgia. Whatever comes to mind first.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to count up my remaining coins and make sure I haven't lost my lucky penny...

Let's talk about the games that may come to Project Cafe

Posted: 01 Jun 2011 09:00 AM PDT

Let's talk about the games that may come to Project Cafe screenshot

Nintendo would rather you not know anything about Project Cafe. The existence of the console was leaked through various sources a little over a month ago, and eventually Nintendo had to fess up and admit that the project was real. If it weren't for that, none of us would even know the console exists.

As such, developers have been extremely tight-lipped about what they know about Project Cafe. Both on and off the record, I've been unable to get anyone I know in the industry to confirm anything about the console. For the most part, everyone just says "Just wait until E3." As if I wasn't doing that already.

So while we're all waiting for E3 (where we'll hopefully get more info on Project Cafe and its games), lets talk about what we do know about the games that may come to Project Cafe -- the good, the bad, and the highly unlikely.

New No More Heroes title

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 90%

There was a time I would have put this one at 100% -- right after No More Heroes' creator Suda51 made it clear for the second time that the next No More Heroes is coming to Nintendo's next home console. Since then, we haven't heard anything from Suda, and the guy is known for changing his mind pretty quickly. That, combined with the ever-growing presence of No More Heroes on the PS3, and I get the idea that the next title may make the jump to Sony's home console.

That said, I doubt the future of No More Heroes will skip Nintendo systems entirely. I still think that a Project Cafe version of the next No More Heroes is more or less assured, it just may not be a console exclusive. That's fine by me, as long as you get some bonus for moving your No More Heroes 1 and 2 save games over to Project Cafe when you boot up No More Heroes 3. Specifically, I want Jean to have kittens. Evil kittens.

New Pikmin title

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 80%

We first heard that Nintendo was working on a new Pikmin title back in 2008. Almost four E3s later, and we're yet to get a look at the game. I would bet that's because the game was moved to the one console Nintendo has yet to go public with -- Project Cafe. There's also the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto himself has stated that Pikmin would benefit from HD

Then again, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said that "Pikmin is perfect for 3D" as well, so we can't rule out the 3DS as Pikmin's future home either. Maybe a Pikmin 3DS and Pikmin Project Cafe simultaneous launch is in our future, like Metroid Prime and Metroid Fusion same day release from the GameCube/Game Boy Advance era?

That might make up for the total lack of new Pikmin games fans have suffered for over the past five years. Might.

Sonic Generations

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 75%

We haven't heard anything about this one, but I'm still pretty confident that it's going to happen. For starters, just about every Sonic game of this generation (Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 4, Sonic Colors) were all released on Nintendo home consoles, not to mention all those ridiculously profitable Mario and Sonic at the Olympics games.

More so, according to Sega, the only reason why Sonic Generations isn't coming to the Wii is because the Wii doesn't display in HD. According to rumor, Project Cafe will display in HD, so there's no barriers to the game heading to the console.

The real kicker is that the game was shown to be coming to the 3DS and PC. Could it be that in this instance, "PC" means "Project Cafe"? Only Sega knows for sure.

Upcoming "Core" titles from Ubisoft

How sure we are that they're coming to Cafe: 50%

Ubisoft is one of the few publishers who have gone on record stating that they will be supporting Project Cafe, at least with ports. Thing is, that could mean anything. Logic dictates that they'll be bringing out future PS3/360 titles like Assassin's Creed: Revelations to Project Cafe as well. Thing is, this is a Nintendo console we're talking about, so anything goes. It's also possible that the only games Project Cafe will get from Ubisoft will have the words "rabbids," "just," and "dance" in their titles.

I just hope Ubisoft brings From Dust to Project Cafe, but that's because I love the game, and I want everyone on the planet to at least give it a try.

Resident Evil 5

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 35%

Now we're getting into pure speculation mode, but if history is any indicator, Resident Evil 5 will make it to Project Cafe. Number five is the only number game in the Resident Evil series that has yet to make it to a Nintendo console, and we all know how fond Capcom is of re-releasing its old games for new consoles with new content.

Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition is still one of the best-selling third-party titles on the Wii, and that's despite the fact that the Wii is backwards compatible with the GameCube, essentially making the Wii-specific version of the game something of a luxury item. That's proof of just how well Capcom has done over the years at building a huge following of Resident Evil fans on Nintendo consoles, and they'd do wise up to capitalize on that audience with Project Cafe.

Super Meat Boy

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 20%

I write Edmund McMillen (co-creator of Super Meat Boy) stupid emails every once in while, asking him stupid questions. He's always nice enough to answer, but sometimes, I get the sense that he wishes he didn't say anything. Like the time I asked him if "Hitlers really must die." When he responded "They really must!," I took that throw away comment, and ran with it in the form of a full-on feature about how awesome it would be if he completed that promising, unfinished Hitler-murder simulator. That's how excited I am about this guy's games.

I also wrote Edmund asking him if he was working on something for Project Cafe. His response?

"MAYBE!"

Knowing him, that could mean anything, though my instincts tell me that if Team Meat can bring Super Meat Boy to Project Cafe, they will. It was actually Edmund who first told me that a lot of third-party developers are diverting their resources from the Wii to Nintendo's next home console, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Team Meat has been up to ever since the WiiWare version of Super Meat Boy was canceled last year.

New Fatal Frame title

How sure we are that it's coming to Cafe: 10%

Tecmo Koei has made it clear that they are working to get Project Cafe games ready for the console's launch. This announcement was made a few months after the producer of Fatal Frame announced that he was working on a secret project. All of that was after the announcement last year that a new Fatal Frame title is coming to the Wii, though short of a few screen shots, we still haven't seen anything of that game.

None of this points directly at a Fatal Frame title for Project Cafe, though there are a couple of reasons why I'm still leaning towards that possibility. Fatal Frame 4, a Wii exclusive, sold better than any other game in the series (in the one country where it was released, that is). Following up on that success of Nintendo's next console seems like a logical move.

Also, Fatal Frame's camera-based ghost-busting combat sounds like it could be a perfect fit for Project Cafe's rumored camera-based controller. Adding a little AR to the Fatal Frame formula could be just the thing the slowing series needs

Speaking of which...

New AR games

How sure we are that they're coming to Cafe: 0%

Nintendo has already confirmed that it's working on new AR games for the 3DS, so I think it's safe to say -- if the rumors are true that Project Cafe has a camera-infused controller -- some of Nintendo's future AR games are headed to that console as well.

Then again, this is Nintendo we're talking about, so nothing is really "safe to say." After the Wii Balance Board broke 20 million units sold, one might have said it was "safe to say" that Nintendo would be bringing out more Balance Board-controlled games as well. Yet, here we are, over three years after Nintendo launched that peripheral, and you can count the amount of Balance Board games that Nintendo has published on one hand.

The AR games on the 3DS are some of the more interesting experiences available on the system. I just  hope Nintendo doesn't abandon this new concept like they have so many of the other exciting new ideas they've failed to capitalize on.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

How sure we are that it's coming: Negative 30%

I know a lot of people are guessing that the upcoming Wii title The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will get a simultaneous Wii/Project Cafe release, just as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess did on the GameCube/Wii back in 2006. From what I'm hearing though, that's not going to happen. Rumor has it that Project Cafe will be fully backwards compatible with Wii titles, and will have the capacity to upscale Wii titles to full HD. That would render the whole idea of a Project Cafe-specific version of the game pretty much worthless. That's assuming that there isn't some other function other than HD graphics that would make Skyward Sword on Project Cafe a worthwhile endeavor.

No, my guess is that Skyward Sword will release this November, as one of the final pushes towards getting long-time hold-outs to buy a Wii this holiday. You'll still get to play the game in HD eventually, you'll just have to wait until Project Cafe launches in 2012.

Super Smash Bros. Strife

How sure we are that it's coming: Negative 50%

Sure, this could be real. The Easter Bunny could be real. So could reptilian shapeshifters. If I were a betting man though, I'd say that neither are all that likely to exist. Same goes for this rumored Smash Bros. game, entitled Super Smash Bros. Strife.

Whenever you see "leaked" footage of a game's intro screen, or a console boot-up menu, you can bet that it's crap. There is no logical reason why someone would only get a picture of the boot up menu, or only of a game's intro screen, and not grab some actually gameplay footage as well. However, there are many reasons why someone would fake a menu screen or a boot-up menu, and all of them involve a troll face (or some reasonable Nintendo-fan equivalent of troll face).

Load of Games rumored to be on a promo video seen by the ESRB

How sure we are that it's coming: ??%

One of the more popular Project Cafe rumors going around right now comes from someone who claims to work for the ESRB, an agency which is tasked to rate the appropriateness of everything vidoegame related, even the trailers. This ESRB employee claims to have seen the video that Nintendo will be showing at E3 to promote Project Cafe --or, as they call it, "Current" -- and the list of games they've named from the video is pretty astounding.

This list includes: a new mini-game collection, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. 4, Endless Ocean, Pikmin, Kirby, a new Zelda collection, Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus, Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario., Dead Rising 2, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5 "or something that looked like it," Silent Hill Downpour, a new Suda51 game that is "not No More Heroes" but is about "something hunting demons," "some mech game," Trauma Center: Current Crisis, Soul Calibur, Tekken, GTA V, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, "some Metal Gear Solid game where you play as a girl," "some cyber punk game" that looks like Snatcher, Gradius, Contra, Castlevania, and "Fallout 3 or 4."

So yeah, that's a pretty insane list. It's hard to believe that any of it's real, but seeing as the 3DS had a new Kid Icarus, Metal Gear, Assassin's Creed, two Resident Evil games, Contra, Castlevania, Street Fighter, Zelda, Persona, and many other games announced in conjunction with the console's initial reveal at E3 2010, I wouldn't put it past Nintendo to somehow get that many third parties to back them out of the gate with their next home console. It especially makes sense to see so many titles from Konami, Namco, and Capcom, who were strong early supporters of the Wii as well.

Mini editorial time -- third parties largely avoided putting their AAA titles on the Wii, and as such, they lost out on potential revenue from the Wii's 70+ million unit user base. We've heard third parties say time and time again that when they Wii took off in popularity, that they were "caught with their pants down." I'm guessing that with Project Cafe, those same third parties will be sure not to make the same mistake twice.

Punch Out!!! TOUCH

How sure we are that it's coming: ??% times infinity

Niero said to put this on the list, so that's what I'm doing. He's probably just trolling me, but since he's one of the most important and well-informed people in the game's industry, I can't count him out.

Quit playing games with my heart, Niero.

OK, that's quite enough out of me. How about you guys? What games do you think should come to Project Cafe? What games have you heard are making their way to the console? The official unveiling of the thing is only a week away, so if you want to blow our minds with your incredible videogame journalism Project Cafe news scoop powers, you'd better do it fast.

This is the latest trailer for Fluffy: Operation Overkill, soon to arrive on Xbox Live Indie Games. A 2D run-and-gun, you play an unhinged squirrel in a hazard suit fighting legions of virulent beasts while searching for a cure to save the world. Slaughter with a variety of weapons and special abilities and score bonus points for stylish kills.

So So Dev Games promises violence and gore, which this trailer delivers on, as well as crude humor. They certainly know how to charm a lad. Looking forward to giving this a proper shot when it arrives on the service.
