Students: Get a free Xbox 360 with your new PC

Students: Get a free Xbox 360 with your new PC screenshot

School always sucks, but having the yearly excuse to get new things like computers and clothing is always good. Well, unless you hate clothing. You could be that guy that wears generic jeans and a Fruit of the Loom hoodie every day. Still, new computer!

Microsoft is working with participating retailers to give high school and college students a free 4GB Xbox 360 with the purchase of any Windows PC priced at $699 or more. Nice. A Xbox 360 has nothing to do with school, but I'm sure all students will be glad to take one.

Microsoft has all the details here, but here's the summary: Students with an .edu email address can purchase a new PC through participating retailers including Dell.com, HP.com or the Microsoft Store. They will need to verify student status in order to purchase. Quantities are limited, mind you. Start shopping by May 22 to get in on this. Check in with your local retailers now.

Gears of War 3 campaign teased

Much has been made of Gears of War 3's vast multiplayer options, to the point where you might forget that the game has a narrative campaign. Epic Games has reminded us all of this fact today, teasing the game's campaign mode in a new video.

The video is stupidly brief, and says very little of anything. It does, however, tease a more full reveal, slated to appear on the British ITV Channel after some shitty little soccer game. That'll go live on Saturday, May 28.

K'NEX releases Mario Kart Wii building sets

K'NEX releases Mario Kart Wii building sets screenshot

K'NEX are fun and so is Mario Kart Wii. A new collaboration brings the two together, taking Mario, Luigi, Yoshi and the gang to the world of the popular building toy sets. These officially licensed sets will hit retailers this summer and will include build-able tracks and obstacles from the game as well as the Bros. in their own karts. The karts have a pull-back motor to make 'em go, which I'm sure is something like getting a boost mushroom power-up. There's also bike sets. For these, Mario and Luigi will come in a wedge-shaped package that doubles as a ramp. Karts will be priced at $14.99 while bikes are only $7.99.

If you want to go big, get the Mario and Luigi Starting Line building Set, priced at $59.99. It is a version of the Bowser's Castle track from the game, and comes with Sprinter Karts for Mario and Luigi, complete with battery powered motors. There's 16 pieces of track and even a star power-up.

The K'NEX webpage has a dedicated section to these sets. There's even a page for downloadable track panels for ramp boxes!

Team Bondi: L.A. Noire is very appealing to women

Team Bondi: L.A. Noire is very appealing to women screenshot

According to developer Team Bondi, the superior female brain finds L.A. Noire a very rewarding experience. Moreso than Duke Nukem Forever? Crazy talk!

"We think it appeals to a really broad church," said director Brendan McNamara, "and one of the phenomenons we've seen a lot when we watch people play the game is that they'll play it, or their wife or their girlfriend will play it, and two or three people will play it together like they're watching TV.

"Three people can be entertained playing the same game and that's a bit of a phenomenon. So far it's been very appealing to women too, which is great. I think women are pretty good at reading whether people are lying or not."

I'd say L.A. Noire certainly has a wider appeal than some of the more violent titles out there, and I think it does a terrific job of providing something for everybody. As a matter of anecdotal evidence, I can confirm that my wife tried to Bogart my time with the review copy. She's obsessed with the damn thing!

New website for Kid Icarus Uprising promises parade float

New website for Kid Icarus Uprising promises parade float screenshot

There's nothing in the way of game media at the newly launched Japanese website for upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Kid Icarus Uprising. It's older trailers from last year. I suspect that it will be updated next month, closer to E3.

There is one strange promotion there that you might be interested in. Nintendo is going to use fans' Miis in a float that will appear in the Goshogawara Tachineputa festival this August. Miis will join Pit and godess Partena, says Andriasang. This page (Japanese) has instructions on how to create a Mii on your 3DS, save it to the memory card, and then send it in to Nintendo. I seriously doubt they'll include those strange Miis made to look like dicks.

Is this a genuine photograph of Project Cafe?

Is this a genuine photograph of Project Cafe? screenshot

A photograph has clambered its way up the Internet grapevine, one that allegedly displays the Project Cafe console in all its white, curvy glory. If it's the genuine article, then Nintendo's new console is a cross between a Wii and a Tupperware box.

Naturally, this is totally unconfirmed, and like all Cafe rumors, it should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism. Speaking in the purely hypothetical sense, though, would you proudly have that sat underneath your television set?

Cafe is rumored to have a touch-screen controller, superior HD graphics, the ability to cook a chicken, and houses a fragment of the Triforce of Wisdom.

Cave's new website, merchandise sale screenshot

Cave has a new website that they'd like to show off. They made this for you, English speaker. There you can see all the delicious shooter action they make as well as catch up on what they're working on.

In other Cave news, the company is holding an online Cave festival starting May 23 and running through May 28. They've lined up some new shooting merchandise from franchises like Espgaluda, Dodonpachi and Mushihimesama. There's going to be soundtracks, shirts and other goodies to nab. You'll want to check their shop link in a few days. It's out of stock now, but I'd happily use the above pictured Cave umbrella.

Far Cry 2 dev: L.A. Noire derivative, uninspiring

Far Cry 2 dev: L.A. Noire derivative, uninspiring screenshot

Far Cry 2's creative director, Clint Hocking, has slammed L.A. Noire six ways to Sunday, tearing the game apart as a piece of kitsch entertainment, and declaring that it has nothing to say for itself. Man, and sometimes I feel unprofessional when I rag on my industry peers.

"1hr in. Moriarty was right re games as kitsch," He said, referencing a GDC talk. "Derivative, uninspired, narcissistic. Nothing original to say, & said badly. #LANoire"

Pretty damn vicious, but while I thoroughly disagree, I'll respect the man's right to an opinion. The only problem with the criticism is that Hocking's own contribution to the game industry was glitchy, poorly paced, creatively contradictory nonsense. #FarCry2 #DoucheyStrawmanEvenIfItsTrue.

Grasshopper Manufacture raises $80k for Japan relief

Grasshopper Manufacture raises $80k for Japan relief screenshot

The fine folks at Grasshopper Manufacture immediately jumped to action to help out after the March earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, and now they send word that they've managed to pull together more than $80,000 for relief funds through various efforts.

Their first iOS app, Frog Minutes, helped out quite a bit, as 100 percent of the proceeds went to relief funds. It quickly jumped to the top of the iOS Japan sales charts and has since pulled in about $20,000. More help came from the company's cooperation with charity auction Play For Japan. Team member and Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka auctioned up his guitar and gear to raise almost $10,000. Beyond this, EA donated $50,000 to the Red Cross on behalf of Grashopper. The two companies are worked together to create Shadow of the Damned.

Nice work, Grasshopper.

Rumor: Alan Wake: Night Springs coming to XBLA

Rumor: Alan Wake: Night Springs coming to XBLA screenshot

According to those always crafty ANONYMOUS SOURCES, Remedy is beavering away on a brand new Alan Wake title -- a downloadable offering known as Alan Wake: Night Springs

The gossip suggests that Night Springs will be based on the horror show of the same name, that was seen playing on in-game television sets during the course of Alan Wake. As a spin-off based on a fake TV show, it's unlikely that Night Springs will feature Wake himself, or continue the story.

Remedy recently said that more Alan Wake was in the works and it wouldn't be a sequel or DLC, though I'm sure nobody expect a concept like this. I'd me very happy to give it a go, I know that much. Anybody else prepared to go with this idea?
