Super Robot Taisen Original Generation Returns

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:29 PM PDT

Namco Bandai Games announced in this week's issue of Famitsu magazine that the Super Robot Taisen Original Generation series is making its debut on the PlayStation 3 in a scant few months.

Dai 2 Ji Super Robot Taisen OG, the eight in the Original Generation series, is due out exclusively for the PS3 this August. Two versions will be available: the plain old PS3 game, and a limited-edition package that includes the Blu-ray collection of Super Robot Wars Original Generation: The Inspector, a 26-episode anime that wrapped up its TV run last month. This limited pack will cost 41,790 yen.

Original Generation is a spin-off of the Super Robot Taisen series of anime-robot strategy sims that boasts a 100-percent original story instead of relying on robots licensed from assorted Japanese shows. The most recent OG game to hit the US was Endless Frontier: Super Robot Taisen OG Saga on the Nintendo DS in 2009 (pictured above).

The PlayStation Phone, Xperia Play, Debuts on May 26

Xperia Play

After many months of rumors about a so-called PlayStation Phone, Sony Ericsson confirmed the Xperia Play in February. The phone, which is already available elsewhere in the world, will finally debut in the United States with Verizon Wireless on May 26.

Pre-orders for the device will begin this Thursday, May 19, for $199.99. It carries the PlayStation Certified branding, a phrase that indicates it's capable of delivering a "PlayStation quality experience." The Xperia Play's most noteworthy feature is its slide-out, PlayStation-style controller, seen above.

It will come pre-loaded with a number of games -- Madden NFL 11, The Sims 3, Crash Bandicoot, Star Battalion, Asphalt 6, and Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior will all be available on the device when it's first purchased. As it runs on Android, there should be no shortage of other games to check out, too, and we've already seen what it can do with an emulator installed.

Mass Effect 2's PS3 Digital Comic Comes to 360

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:29 PM PDT

Mass Effect 2

To compensate for the lack of a PlayStation 3 version of the original Mass Effect, BioWare teamed up with Dark Horse Comics to create an interactive, digital comic, Mass Effect: Genesis. It came with the PS3 version of ME2 when it was released in January, and it has now been brought over to the Xbox 360 as downloadable content.

The comic's purpose is to tell the story of the first game and allow players to make key decisions that are presented in the first Mass Effect. That's an important part of the series, as these choices carry over from game to game and include major plot points, such as which characters live and die.

While the comic came as a freebie with new copies of the PS3 version, Xbox 360 owners will have to pay 320 Microsoft Points ($4) and own a copy of Mass Effect 2 to check it out. It might not be nearly as useful as it is to PS3 users, as 360 owners have the option of playing the first game, but this will allow series newcomers to skip it without missing as much of the experience as they otherwise would.

New Uncharted Toys Joined by Resistance and Ratchet & Clank

Uncharted Minimates

Diamond Select Toys' new line of PlayStation Minimates are starting to hit Toys R Us now, including what it claims are the first Uncharted action figures ever made.

There are four two-packs in total, each covering one of the PlayStation's more noteworthy franchises: Uncharted, Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, and Jak and Daxter. (Unfortunately, there's no Kevin Butler one, which would be my top choice.) All four are exclusive to Toys R Us, at least for the time being. Two of them (Jak and Ratchet) are currently listed on the store's website for $7.49 each.

Minimates are usually based on TV series, movies, and comic books, such as Ghostbusters, 24, and The Lord of the Rings, but there have been videogame ones in the past, including a line based on Halo.

Lego Harry Potter 2 Shows Up on Animator's Resume

Lego Harry Potter

Traveller's Tales plans to keep the Lego game releases rolling. It shouldn't come as much of a shock, given its track record, that a sequel to Lego Harry Potter is in development, according to an animator's resume.

As spotted by Superannuation, listed alongside work done on TT Fusion's already-published Lego Star Wars III and Lego Pirates of the Caribbean is Lego Harry Potter 2. It's noted as coming to PSP, DS, PSP2 (i.e. NGP), and 3DS. Looking at the series' past, you can also expect it to show up on PC, Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, as these games tend to show up on every platform possible.

The first Lego Harry Potter covered only the events of the first four novels, leaving three more books to cover. That includes the Deathly Hallows, which was split into two parts for the film adaptation.

1UP's L.A. Noire Detective Handbook

Our handbook of tips will help you close cases, catch the bad guys, and save the girl.

Team Bondi's L.A. Noire isn't just about strutting around in suits and fedoras. It takes hard work before you can call yourself a detective in the City of Angels. Gather and review evidence, interview suspects, and the occasional gunfight are all part of the day-to-day job. That's why we've put together a Detective Handbook to help prospective gumshoes. In addition to the Handbook, be sure to visit MyCheats for a L.A. Noire Walkthrough and Strategy SuperGuide for a complete guide to the game.

  • Examine the Body

    Examine the Body

If the investigation involves a murder that means there's a cold body lying around. This should be the first thing you examine. Make sure you look at the victim's head, arms, and anything else that you're able to examine. Don't forget to rummage through their pockets if they have any; there could be an important clue tucked away. Keep an eye out for signs of trauma: cuts, bruises, and wounds of any sort. When examining the hands, look for signs of jewelry that may be missing, like a wedding band or a ring mark on the fingers.

Sonic Generations Also Coming to 3DS and PC

Sonic Generations

As a part of the celebration for Sonic's 20th anniversary, Sega announced Sonic Generations last month. The only platforms the game was said to be coming to at the time were Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. According to a new earnings report for Sega Sammy, Generations is apparently also coming to 3DS and PC.

Generations features two distinct styles of play: the classic, 2D side-scrolling action seen in older Sonic titles and the 3D style seen in games like Sonic Adventure. Classic Sonic levels serve as the inspiration for the 2D and 3D levels in Generations.

Sega has yet to officially confirm the news of the 3DS and PC versions; the earnings report listing could very well turn out to be a mistake, but the possibility doesn't seem like much of a stretch. If it is true, one has to wonder why the Wii is being left out after getting Sonic Unleashed, Sonic 4, and Sonic Colors.

Infinity Blade Gets Free Multiplayer Support on Thursday

Infinity Blade

One of the best-looking games on iOS is about to get a slate of new features, including online multiplayer, free of charge. Developer Chair Entertainment has announced it will release the Infinity Blade: Arena pack as a free update on the App Store on Thursday, May 19.

The 'Arena' part of the title refers to the new Arena mode. That's where you'll be able to play online multiplayer matches as either Titans or Knights through Game Center. The update also adds a new Survivor mode where you fight through an endless wave of enemies, almost like a take on Gears of War's Horde mode.

Other additions include new holiday helms, over two dozen new items to collect and use, new Facebook integration, new leaderboards, new Achievements, and some other surprises that Chair isn't detailing just yet.

Sony CEO Lashes Out at Critics of PSN Attack Response

Posted: 17 May 2011 09:29 PM PDT

Howard Stringer

There was no shortage of criticism over the amount of time it took Sony to inform the public of the PlayStation Network breach that resulted in users' personal data being stolen. Sony claimed the intrusion was discovered "between April 17 and April 19," PSN was taken offline on April 20, and word didn't go out until April 26 that data might be at risk, despite days of speculation that such a scenario was possible.

This was attributed to Sony only discovering the extent of the breach on April 25, but that didn't stop fans, Attorney Generals, and even Congress from voicing concern over how long it took. Sony CEO Howard Stringer feels the company was actually very timely and he questions anyone who says otherwise.

"This was an unprecedented situation," Stringer said today, Reuters reports. "Most of these breaches go unreported by companies. Forty-three percent notify victims within a month. We reported in a week. You're telling me my week wasn't fast enough?"
